Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD**
Time

Honestly I think the real problem is the HFR still being too low in frame rate.  It looks sped up because it is in that weird uncanny valley.  Think about it this way: imagine you saw a plusating light.  A normal slow speed would not even appear as a flicker, it would be comfortable and feel natural.  However speeding it up will cause the light of course to go faster making it start to appear like a flicker or even strobe light.  It feels uncomfortable for your eyes, and you hate that it is sped up.  Eventually, however, if you speed up the light much, much faster the flicker will eventually disappear entirely, allowing you to only see a light coming at you with no pulsation.  Now of course frame rate has nothing to do with flicker (that's refresh rate), but both have a necessary minimum to reach full fluidity.  Low fluidity and full fluidity are comfortable, but in between bothers many.  Try watching a 24hz monitor and you'll ruin your eyes.  But see a 60hz monitor and your fine, since the upper flicker limit is somewhere between 50-72hz.  Frame rate has some limit just like this going from watching a moving picture to seeing a movie that is indistinguishable from a play in a theatre.  Now, I honestly don't know what that minimum frame rate is but it is far higher than 48 or 60fps or even 120fps.

Sorry for the long paragraph, but I had done a lot of research on this at a previous point.  The human eye does see a far amount more than the typical 40-60fps people typically claim.  Brain nerves can fire a huge amount of times per second though how much one consciously perceives from the eye is up to debate.

I would believe it to be fake honestly, because it looks way too JJ Trek, and not like Star Wars is supposed to look, and we understand that JJ knows Star Wars really well from the videos of the puppet, X-wing, and the amazing full sized millennium falcon.  Plus for a CG Falcon, there are better looking 3d models out there (not that there's much detail to see from a small gif).

But if this was real, well I'd certainly not be happy.  BTW, has it been confirmed yet wether they are using miniatures and real models for FX shots, especially space scenes as well?  I haven't heard anything about that I remember.

**RUMOR** Original theatrical cut of the OT to be released on blu ray!!
Time

If they at the least have all the raw footage still around from the PT, Disney should at least consider re-editing the films from the ground up, not having to strictly stick to the set structure of the original versions.  Then they do all new modern VFX, also not having to necessarily stick to what was originally there.  And even the new VFX could help modify the story, along with maybe just a little newly shot footage here and there.  And they can do it all in a 4K DI, given the live-action footage is properly upscaled via the best motion-adpative upscalers available.

But we all know no studio would ever spend that kind of money a project like that unfortunately.

That concept art is AMAZING!!!  It's so beautiful and has such a classic art style to much of it.  And the return of the lived in universe looks so realistic.  If the movie is really going to look like this, we are going to have a treat.

Honestly I don't mind seeing this stuff as much right now, since we don't have any real solid material on the plot, so it looks more mysterious than spoilery to me.

okay, well the plan is I am thinking about doing two different versions of the grade.  One that looks older and more like the OT, and one that looks newer and so reflects some more modern grading styles.

I've watched the entire ROTS movie (and part of ATOC/TPM) with both types of grades and they improve the films on a visual level a great amount, but in different ways.

But, more importantly, the reason I decided for this split is that so far I haven't felt very satisfied with my OT-like color grade.  It looks straight out of the late 80's in some parts and in other parts look like the footage was processed to hell.  I really want an OT version just as much as many of you want, but until I can perfect it (which is going to be a while), I prefer to release a version that looks much better, but is distinct from the OT look, which makes it easier to accomplish given the source.

An example of the OT grade issues I've had is the highlight recovery.  There are certain parts where the Bluray compression limits REALLY show through, and it ruins it.

I'll try to replace the clip, ASAP.  The lasers don't play nice when you try to tweak some of the colors to be less turquoise.  Then again, I kind of like the more turquoise hues, but I know they aren't OT like.  I just feel that for this first version, it might work better for the films as a whole to make them look like film, but newer film, rather than trying to age them as well (which includes giving the films a strictly OT color scheme.)

Most of the color looks very good to me, however it seems like there is not much variation in the blues, and they've been pushed to an almost turquoise color. This is most apparent in the engine glows, but it can also be seen in R2's panels. There is usually some red in R2's panels, though in the original Star Wars the color can change somewhat based on the lighting. I don't recall them ever being quite that green though.

That's probably due to me trying to remove the warmer tint from the sky.  I can see about making the blue less green.

I think the DVD's colors look better than th BluRay's during the first few scenes of AOTC. I like the white overcast look. The BluRay seems to have a bluer sky, particularly on the establishing shot of the Senate building. I wouldn't mind emphasizing the cloudy look there.

I already am restoring the DVD's (theatrical) color timing prior to the new grade, so that should be covered.
