Sin City: The Movie
Time
cor this has been so quiet for a while it had disappeared

Well...here's some more news for you lot to either enjoy or not:

Variety reports the following:

"Quentin Tarantino has gone from "Kill Bill" to dollar bill.
He got paid exactly $1 to film a scene in "Sin City." Robert Rodriguez co-directed the rest of the Dimension Films drama with Frank Miller, who created the graphic novel series. Tarantino filmed a scene in the final segment featuring Clive Owen, Benicio Del Toro and Brittany Murphy.

While it seemed Tarantino was working cheap, he actually got the better of the deal between himself and Rodriguez. After all, Tarantino paid Rodriguez $1 to compose the score for "Kill Bill Vol. 2."

Tarantino went to Austin, Texas, to shoot the scene and because he wanted to sample the digital filmmaking techniques Rodriguez used on "Sin City.""

Vader: "It would be unfortunate if I had to leave a garrison here, Calrissian"

there we go chaps, quote from the Dark Lord himself, said in both the OT & the OT:SE!

& if your wondering, he says this whilst discussing the fate of Leia & Chewie with Lando.

To me this doesnt say "the Empire has occupied" more that they're kinda squatting for a while (& i dont mean taking a shit), although Lando does announce the Empire has taken control, it could just mean that as Lando has just technically become a fugitive that a large force of Stormies will be on their way to kick some butt..................is there really any point arguing about it?

I remember that when I stoped reading it, Peter Parker had a clone of himself, and it was so weird, I just decided to give up on spider-man. Then on 2002 I watched the movie - wtf? Where was Gwen? What was MJ doing over there? Uh, the name was Gwen, right? Spider-man's first girlfriend?

aww man thats a shame! you're missing out on some gems now!

Recent additions to my increasing comic collection include:

Superman:Birthright....a damn good series that starts where the Smallville TV series would end (ie Clark finishing High School) & when the 1st Superman movie would take place.................roughly the 7 year gap of Superman's life. Quite a good read & only on issue 8 so not too late to jump on that band wagon!

Ultimate whatever...............ok sounds odd but wait.......Marvel decided the time was right to "reinvent" a whole load of their superheros for the 21st century.......the result........ULTIMATE SPIDERMAN.....i dare you to read it & not get hooked, ULTIMATE X-MEN.....absolutely superb art & a cracking reinvention of the X-Men...................THE ULTIMATES..........quite possibly my fave of the 3, Captain America, the HULK, HAWKEYE & a few of the other former Avengers/Defenders get a nice overhaul.........& just recently started ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR which i've yet to read but will get round to it!

Other than that you've also (I'm assuming) missed out on Frank Millers superb collection of SIN CITY stories.......the best comic series I have read since either the Dark Knight Returns or Watchmen!

i understand what you're trying to say Shimraa, i was just trying to point out that HAD they made more of a literal translation of the Iliad then perhaps it would have made more sense? By grinding too much in reality I think the movie kinda did more damage to itself.

But I will say that the Achilles/Hector fight was one of the best 2v2 combats I've seen in a long time!

Um..Ricarlite.....don't know if it'l lessen your anger any but.....

Even in the legend/original poem Paris has always been an archer.

Sorry to disagree with you again Shimraa, honestly its nothing personal

But I thought that was the biggest load of utter predictable cheese bollocks I have had the misfortune of sitting through.

I should have learned my lesson after ID4 & Godzilla & star gate but nope........duped by a nice trailer & the prospect of a groovy disaster movie I went along & was sooooo disappointed. The action sequences you see in the trailer are pretty much the exact length they are in the film!!!

I'm going to see Harry Potter tomorrow, lets hope that provides a bit of entertainment!

OOO..one last thing saw new trailer for Spiderman 2, looks totally awesome! Cant wait

& trailer for Thunderbirds...................

Looked really really good until...the kid arrived

Troy
Time
In Greek Mythology, Helen is the daughter of Zeus.

Due to her divinity, any mortal man laying eyes on her is doomed to fall in love with her "beauty".

Unfortunately the producers/writers of Troy decided to leave out any aspect of the Gods, except mentioning them. This is a fatal mistake, in my opinion, as the influence of the Greek Gods has a large impact upon the story:

1. in Helen's case stated above.

2. Paris is visited by 3 Goddess's Hera, Athena & Aphrodite. He is asked to choose which he thinks is the most beautiful, each offering a worthy prize if they are chosen. Aphrodite shows him a vision of Helen, falling instantly in love with her (see above) he chooses Aphrodite.

3. Achilles (feared warrior Brad Pitt) is the Son of the Goddess Thetis, who bathes him as a baby in the River Styx ( the river that seperates the land of the living from the land of the dead), this makes him virtually invulnerable in combat (where do you think the term Achilles heel comes from????)

4. in Agamemnon's desire to conquer Troy he is told by his soothsayer (fortune teller) that the Gods demand a sacrifice before allowing the God of the wind to raise a breeze strong enough to allow the Greeks to embark on there quest. He is told to sacrifice his only daughter, which he does so providing yet anothe rmissed plot point for the culmination of the tale.

Also missing from the story was Cassandra, Hector & Paris's sister, who has the gift of foresight & as a young child has recurring visions of Paris's infidelity & the subsequential fall of Troy. Upon the birth of Paris, she convinces her father, King Priam, that Paris must not live & must be killed. Paris is taken to be killed but is left to die in the wild where he is later found & brought up by a Goat farmer.

What does all this mean??

Well it means one person that was bitterly disappointed with Troy. It was a good ACTION/WAR movie, but not great! I felt it had soooo much potential, potential to rival even Gladiator, but ultimately fell short of the mark. As for the actors?????

Brad Pitt: wooden
Orlando Bloom: annoying
Diane Kruger: pretty but without the knowledge of her curse, not pretty enough
Eric Bana: the REAL STAR of the movie!
Peter O'Toole: excellent as ever, very noble

& all the others?

Over the top to the point of becoming camp!

Another empty handed offering by Hollywood studio's!

When will they learn???

Just as a point of interest, released I think about a year or so prior to Troy was the Hallmark "Helen Of Troy". Now the acting leaves alot to be desired & the action stinks of Hercules BUT the story does quite nicely follow the tale of Troy until the end, where it gets a bit confused as it quickly tries to tie everything up! Worth checking out as a comparison!

Van Helsing
Time
I checked out both Van Helsing & TROY last week.

Van Helsing - overall verdict.....................completely over the top nonsensical nonsense THAT WAS AWESOME NO BRAINER POPCORN MUNCHING FUN!

WE all knew it was going to be OTT after the Mummy Returns & the Scorpion King, I, personally, was expecting the whole thing to totally SUCK BALLS, but it was good crazy fun!

Troy......................................

Where the fuck did 200 million dollars go? It sure as hell didn't go on the script! Maybe it went into the CGI for Brad Pitts legs? Well this was a film I was looking forward too, being a BIG FAN of anything Greek Mythology wise, especially the classic Ray Harryhausen flicks!

I can forgive the subtle changes in the text, look to Clash of the Titans for complete arsing of Greek Legends, so what was the problem?

The film looks great, superbly shot & for the most part acted extremely, if not a little too hammy, well.

Eric Bana is superb as the troubled, yet noble Hector. Peter O'Toole lends an air of authority & tenderness to his role of Priam. Brian Cox totally hams it up as Agamemnon, Sean Bean is ever on form as Odysseus & Brendan Gleeson lumps it up as spurned King Menelaus.

Great cast & great photography.....so where exactly is the problem?

Orlando Bloom!

Sorry to any fans out there but he just can't act at all! How this kid has got so far is beyond me? If i have to sit through another film watching his 2 acting expressions (eyebrows up in a "arent i so cute way" & eyebrows down in a "cor im trying to look disgruntled but really look like i've shat my pants" kind of way) I shall scream!

His portrayal of Paris just left me wanting to boot the whinin little fairy right in the arse!

But perhaps i shouldnt be too heavy on him, its not as if he had a lot of quality written material to work with! Bordering on hammy, you can imagine the scriptwriter really thought he was getting close to achieving that classic golden Hollywood era of epic movie! Pffffff, Cleopatra this is not!

For all my ribbing I really did enjoy the movie, I was secretly hoping that it would be better than gladiator, which although a good movie, i found to be rather over hyped, alas it fairs no better than gladiator.

It's just such a shame that TROY had the potential to be so much & ended up delivering not enough!

Not suggesting that there wasn't inter-tribe warfare, just don't think it was on quite the same scale as the white settlers attacks

And watching Pearl Harbor (it's been a while, Christmas Eve 2000, I think) never gave me the impression they were suggesting PH started the War."

Ok thanks for answering that one, as I stated in my post I was merely curious as to how WW2 was taught, not attacking you in any way, go back & re-read my post, as a non-American, who had relatives that died in WW2, one is curious as to how you lot over the pond are taught. I also stated that I DO REALISE it's just a movie & wanted to make sure that it was just instances of movie glorification and not subtle "correctings of history".

I am in no way insulting you or suggesting that what you state is right or wrong, I was merely offering some other instances of acts of genocide that appear to have been "brushed under the carpet" so to speak. I personally feel it is important that these acts of genocide, as well as the mass slaughter in WW2, even WW1, NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. Do we really want to repeat past events?

Just a couple more examples of genocide:

The eradication of the Aborigines in Australia (damn those pesky white men, they are so evil ), the atrocities commited by the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia in 1975. In more recent memory there has been the acts of genocide commited against the Kurds in Kosova!

Chaltab, don't take my comments personally, they are not personal attacks, if they were I'm sure you'd notice I'm almost playing Devil's Advocate with ya!

Regarding your comment above about white men being the evil of the world, well IMHO the white man, past & present, does have a lot to answer for, don't you think? By forgetting these events, because as you say, we are nothing to do with it, do you not think that we are blinding ourselves? Surely it is a great dishonour to simply forget these past crimes? Does it not bother you in the slightest that your distant anscestors were capable of such heinous acts? I know theres nothing we can do about it now, that's not the point, the point is that we can be best served by remembering past terrors and ensuring that OUR descendants don't repeat past mistakes.

Star Wars Pan Scan
Time
Just to add another perspective into the Full Screen vs Wide Screen debate...

I work in a video rental shop here in the UK & you wouldnt believe the number of customers I serve who choose a VIDEO over DVD because it's not presented in wide screen! I've explained til I'm blue in the face to ignoramouses the benefits of watching a movie in wide screen but alas it falls on deaf ears.

The most common response i hear is:

"but those bars on top & bottom, cutting the picture up gets on my nerves"

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT???????????????????????????????????????? Are these people for real????

Unfortunately, YES! The average punter doesn't understand how pan & scan works & if the movie they're watching fills their 28" tv screens then they are happy. If it is presented in wide screen on their puny 4:3 tv's then they feel they are not watching the whole movie & it's too small to see clearly!

Whilst these people still exist without their 42" Anamorphic Wide Screen tv's there will always be a demand for crappy pan and scan movies

sucks doesn't it?

Whilst the subject of "ethnic cleansing" is high on the topic of debate....

lets bring up a few HISTORICAL points...

Hmmm lets see.....................Genocide.......

How about WHITE Americans commiting acts of genocide against the native people? Kinda sounds like ethnic cleansing to me......does that make it any better or worse than what Hitler attempted? No it doesn't, both are heinous evil acts THAT SHOULD NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. I'm sure it gets skipped over in US history class tho

& before anyone thinks I'm anti American.......Im a Brit & I'm WELL AWARE of the fact that The British Empire INVENTED the CONCENTRATION CAMP during the BOER WAR which was fought during 1899-1901.

Just changing the subject slightly.......had the misfortune of watching PEARL HARBOUR & was amazed at some of the liberties taken by Messers Bruckheimer & Bay, although rightly I should be pointing the finger of death at the script writers!

Hmm the first instance that annoyed me................the RAF pilots casual comment about "how the Yankee pilots would single handedly win the War"

& secondly the notion that the War didn't start until the bombing of Pearl Harbour!

Now these may seem inconsequential or perhaps even trivial to most of you, but to me I find it totally unbelievable! Just want to clarify something here....

To you Americans out there..........during your history classes do you study WW2? If so...what period do you study? By this I mean, do you study the War as a whole or just the American involvement? It does make me wonder whether US kids are taught that WW2 didn't start until 1941! I realise "it's just a film" I'm just curious.

Bossk, I think it was either called:

Night of the Long Swords

or Night of a Thousand Swords!

It was as Motti said, to remove all political opposition to Hitler's position of power and ideology. The ethnic cleansing, the "purification of the German people", did not extend to just Jews, Blacks, Asians, Communitsts etcetc as Motti has stated, although they were targeted.

ANY GERMAN CITIZEN THAT COULD NOT PROVE HE/SHE WAS A "PURE BLOOD GERMAN" ie ARYAN, AND THIS HAD TO BE PROVEN BACK 3 or 4 GENERATIONS, WAS FORBIDDEN FULL GERMAN CITIZENSHIP.

They were forbidden to marry, work etcetc. If a full German citizen happened to be married to a "non-German" then they either had to divorce said person or lose their right to citizenship.
