I knew Vader’s face seemed off in that shot but couldn’t put my foot on it.
I knew Vader’s face seemed off in that shot but couldn’t put my foot on it.
I will try. Probably won’t be able to get to it for a days since I got a tight work schedule this week. I’ll try to have it done over the weekend.
I have the 1994 VHS (basically a reprint of the 1991 VHS) copied to a DVD. Haven’t actually ripped the audio though.
Officially you can get it on any Region 1 DVD or the remastered LD from the ‘90s.
Shoot this guy a message.

He has the Criterion mono ripped and synced to the UHD release.
I believe Fast Times at Ridgemont High had some changes as well. Some home video releases had different songs due to licensing but I think this was resolved by the time the film made it to DVD. The surround mix first introduced on the 2005 DVD had some minor effects changes I believe. That DVD as well as the BD does not have the mono. The original DVD and the High School Reunion DVD as far as I know has the correct original mono!
It’s me Pete 1972! You remember when we commented on the Jaws videos? Looks like another film is getting the audio revisionism treatment. According to Digital Bits and some fans, Batman 89’s Dolby Atmos mix has a lot of changes with the sound effects. Gun shots have been altered and the starting up of the Batmobile is changed too. Also Digital Bits said that the Dolby 5.1 on the 4K is a downmix and not the 5.1 that was on the previous Blu Ray.
Figures. (Rolls eyes) Apparently the 4K release of Blade Runner also has audio revisions though I’m not sure off hand what they are.
And yes I do remember you. Nice to see ya again!
actually the audio revisions on Blade Runner date back to when the 2007 Blu-ray was released, and the revisions are only on the final cut, the other cuts have the original sound effects
No I’ve seen comments on bluray.com that apparently more revisions were made to the Final Cut mix for the UHD release.
Here’s part of a quote from one user.
“As for the audio, I must apologise to whomever it was who mentioned that the sounds of the fire plumes in the opening ‘hades’ shot were different, because they ARE different and it’s patently obvious. This isn’t just Atmos affecting it (which I don’t use anyway, listening in straight 7.1), this isn’t just better quality, this is noticeably different audio. This continues into the opening scene at Tyrell Corp, like where you can now hear the distinct ‘woosh’ of the fan blades overhead during the wide shot in the ‘mother’ exchange between Holden and Leon, then when Leon actually shoots him the sound of his first gunshot is largely unchanged but the second one has been altered to a more normal sounding gun and Holden hitting the table is palpably ‘sharper’ sounding, for want of a better description.”

I’ve been using the 2010 version of DVD Architect. Works fine on my Windows 10 computer.
Sad day. RIP Peter. Thank you for giving Chewie life! 😦
At best! 😂😂
Honestly, if the OUT were officially available, I might find the SE funny. But as it is, it’s just sad that one of the most influential films ever made is presented on official home media only in a not only altered, but laughing-stock, form.
The Special Editions feel like an April Fool’s joke that sadly is real.
At best! 😂😂
Something that came to my mind the other day about how Greedo shooting first conflicts with the Jabba scene. Because Greedo shot first there’s really no point for Jabba to ask Han ‘why did you fry poor Greedo??’. Yes you could argue Jabba maybe wasn’t aware Greedo shot first and Han killed in self defense but given that’s how the dialogue was in the original shot scene with Declan Mulholland this seems to tie in better with the idea that Han shot first.
I disagree. I think even if an official release occurs, the restorations are going to continue.
If they don’t include the OUT we should boycott.
Dude we all wanna see the OUT get restored and released but let’s be realistic!
If they don’t include the versions I want, I’m not buying.
I don’t buy things I don’t want.
Is that a realistic boycott?
Not buying something you don’t want is realistic. To be able to boycott a release because it’s only the SE despite the SE having been the only version available for years anyways despite fan complaints is not.
If they don’t include the OUT we should boycott.
Dude we all wanna see the OUT get restored and released but let’s be realistic!
The SE only getting released is non-realistic.
Then explain why they have been the only commercially available versions of the films since 2011???
I don’t know why people think there’ll be a “final version.” That’s very unlikely to happen.
This is literally the only thing I took away from that Kathleen Kennedy interview from two years ago. Anyone hoping for a ‘final cut’ type deal are pretty much out of luck.
If they don’t include the OUT we should boycott.
Dude we all wanna see the OUT get restored and released but let’s be realistic!
Ummmmmmmmmmmm…
He’s being sarcastic
Fair enough.
Ummmmmmmmmmmm…
Like before?
Well, it was slightly different in 2015. The day before the digital release dropped (which was the same week as Celebration IIRC) there was a report citing a “source” within LFL that the Han/Greedo scene had been altered yet again, this time back to its original pre-SE edit.
That report may yet turn out to be true. It could be a change that’s being saved for the 4k remaster.
Anyway, yeah, it wasn’t an OOT rumor that time. But Greedo shooting first is arguably the most controversial change George has made to these films. Changing it back to its original state would be a big deal all on its own.
It’s important to note that the article’s source didn’t specifically say that we should expect the OOT the way that every other rumor has. They kind of hinted at it, but again, the point was more that there were 4K restorations happening, not that we’d get the original versions. That, to me, makes the article a bit more credible since it isn’t as speculative.
Yeah, but they also mention that Lucasfilm is thinking at least three discs per movie and that this Skywalker Saga release will “please fans.”
For the OT films, just what in the world could that possibly mean other than the unaltered version on one of those discs?!
Just visit some other Star Wars boards, and you’ll find that most fans are pleased with the SE. Many of them will argue, that they wouldn’t mind an OOT release, but they don’t view it as essential, and some don’t care for it at all. The OOT fans have sadly become a monority, so “please the fans” doesn’t have to imply an OOT release. The SE in the best state possible with a ton of previously unreleased extras will do that for most fans.
The whole “who shot first” thing is still widely associated with the Star Wars fandom. Pleasing the fans is an obvious nod to the OUT in this context. Whether this will happen or not is a different question.
To me this is nothing more than projecting your own views on the entire fandom. The days that “who shot first” was a big thing in the fandom are long past. The fans are a much wider and diverse group than our little community here on OT.com, many if not most who grew up with the PT, and the SE, and many who consider the SE superior to the original versions, and more consistent when viewed in the context of the saga as a whole. When people at Disney talk about pleasing the fans, they are most likely talking about the growing majority of fans, who would like to see the saga in the highest quality possible in combination with unreleased material, not the dwindling minority of OOT fans.
You are aware that those who want the OUT is not restricted to just this site correct?? I’m not saying the market for the OUT isn’t/hasn’t shrinking/shrunk with each passing day but I would not go as far to say this site represents 99% of those who want it. Just because there isn’t others who post about it doesn’t mean they don’t want it.
I only take issue with Star Wars fans’ opinions when they say they would the OOT not to ever be released alongside the ‘official’ versions.
That would literally be the only scenario it would happen. It ain’t gonna be like E.T. where Spielberg ultimately reversed his opinion and now the theatrical cut is only the available version. The SE’s of Star Wars are here to stay whether we’re happy about it or not. Whether they will coexist someday with the OUT is another story.
I’m very aware, because I’m also active on other boards, and one thing that struck me is, that you often meet the same people who advocate the release of the OOT, while the majority doesn’t seem to care all that much, beyond viewing the OOT as a curiousity, that they might be interested in owning, while their go-to versions will remain the SE. In other words as I said before, the OOT seems nice to have, but not essential to the majority of fans.
Anything could happen. Some could argue 5 cuts of Blade Runner wasn’t essential but for a time they were all coexisting together.
Like before?

For Halloween sadly only the Shout! Factory blu-ray set includes the original unaltered mono.
The 2007 BD I believe has the correct mono as well. The 35th Anniversary single BD (non-box set version) and the 40th Anniversary UHD use a mono downmix.
That’s what he’s saying - disc 1 would be the SE in 4K, disc 2 the SE in 1080p, disc 3 the OT in 1080p, and disc 4 is extras (in 1080p). The standard BR release would just drop the 4K disc.
Exactly, which would once again be giving the two versions unequal treatment (both versions get 1080p but only the SE gets released on UHD).
Honestly, I wouldn’t complain at this point. If I got a good restoration of the original trilogy in 1080p all from original film elements done right, then I’m going to be a happy camper. If that’s what this release turns out to be then I hope that people don’t boycott it based purely on that.
This^
The part about “Four discs per film for the 4k, three for the standard blu” made my heart sink a little, since that might mean they’re once again going to give the two different versions unequal treatment, with the 4k UHD only including the SE in 4k and relegating the unaltered version to 1080p.
When we have actual 4k transfers of these movies made by the fans and LFL actually has the ability to do us one better with a professional cleanup from a scan of higher quality elements only they possess, it would be a real shame if they gave us the OOT only to lock it into a level of quality from 13 years ago. Deja vu, man.
Again, this is assuming anything in this article isn’t total clickbait bs. The timing makes it highly suspect.
My guess is, that they will respect Lucas’ wishes by not restoring the OOT as a whole. What they might possibly do, is to release a whole bunch of restored unreleased footage at 1080p, and in those same extras include the restored OOT scenes.
I’m not convinced that those are exactly his wishes. Lucas is not against film restoration.
Yep. Also if he truly never wanted them released again in any capacity he wouldnt have caved with the GOUT. Yes he cheated us by using LD masters but it at least shows he’s not fully against them being available. If Disney/LF made the decision to fund a restoration of the OUT and have it released, I really doubt George would care (it’s not his money).
All I’m saying is there is no reason Celebration is the only way they will release news about the impending 4K release of Star Wars. It could be Celebration, it could be May 4th, it could be some random Thursday afternoon in July. No need to pin your hopes/fears on just this week 😃

VHS>GOUT
You’re really going to have to tell us why. There is no reason why this could plausibly be the case.
VHS has no motion smearing that I can notice
maybe check the soap-opera effect settings on your DVD player
it has superior sound and visual quality
Objectively false
it has awesome cover art
besides the point
it is anamorphic
VHS is not anamorphic…
and it doesn’t include the SE with it.
besides the point
I’m not talking about the regular faces, I’m talking about the THX certified version.
There is no version of the Faces set that ISN’T THX certified. As outdated as those masters were by 2006, they looked much better on the GOUT than on any VHS.
