This is really cool! It would be awesome to add some more from other places if there’s any to be found. My personal suggestion is to cut to some of the more nondescript pilots first before cutting to someone as recognisable as Boba Fett. Also, the shot of Mando pushing the throttle fits in so perfectly.

Thanks for the feedback Capt Fara. Yeah, I’m still looking for other pilot in a ship that matches to insert in there. Variety is the goal.

The icing on the cake would be a live action version of someone in the Ghost ship. Oh that would be the win win, but no one in live action yet 😉

Absolutely. Rebels is my favourite piece of SW media. There’s gotta be some good cosplayers out there with a 4k camera, surely!

Hmmm if I can’t find that footage. Maybe a zoomed up shot of the ghost in focus and heras voice “ghost or Phoenix squadron standing by” or whatever their go to line is

Maybe zoom in on a 4k shot from Rogue One with the Ghost, and then dub over any of their dialogue from the show that fits.

I was rewatching some scenes from V1 - on the topic of trimming some of Poe’s dialogue with Zorii, I was thinking it might be a really nice, subtle change if the conversation went like this:

POE: I can’t walk out on this war. Not till it’s over… Maybe it is. We sent out a call for help at the Battle of Crait. Nobody came. Everyone’s so afraid. They’ve given up.

ZORII: I don’t believe you believe that. Hey. Listen. [Loop some footage, and bring up the volume level on the background noise, where we can hear some people in the distance calling out “For Skywalker!” with some blaster fire.] They win by making you think you’re alone. Remember? There’s more of us.

I kind of think it would be better to cut “Remember” too, just because it seems like a really awkward callback to some past adventure that we never learn about. (And I’d almost want to scrap the whole “making you think you’re alone” bit too, but we need it to set up Poe’s speech at the briefing later.)

It feels like a gentle way of bringing that “For Skywalker” motif to the forefront for a moment, while also working perfectly with what Poe and Zorii are discussing. We’d just need some dialogue of Keri Russell saying “listen…” and then apply the ol’ “mask filters” to that. Anyone remember a movie or show where she says that?

To be clear, this would go alongside RL’s “Kijimi in rebellion” concept. That audio (that axlanian was looking into) would be what Zorii and Poe would be hearing.

I like the concept, but the conversational logic is a bit wonky if her response to “nobody came to the Battle of Crait” is “you don’t believe that.” Could it be possible to reverse the order of Poe’s lines by cutting to a reverse shot of Zorii to hide the edit? That way, you get “maybe the war is over” followed by “I don’t believe you believe that,” which makes more sense, and I think works nicely if that’s the pause punctuated by the “for Skywalker!” shouts in the distance.

To be fair, I think the whole conversation is really awkward and poorly written. Like the rest of the movie.

How would you structure the dialogue then, though? Zorii says “Come with me,” Poe says, “Nobody came to the Battle of Crait. I can’t give up on this war until it’s over. Maybe it is.” I think that makes less sense as a response, honestly.

The way I see it, it’s not two independent clauses, so Zorii wouldn’t literally be saying “You don’t believe that [no one came to Crait].” I don’t think it’s too awkward to structure it as, “POE: I can’t walk out on this war. Not till it’s over… Maybe it is. [After all,] we sent out a call for help at the Battle of Crait. Nobody came.” The Crait bit is an explanation for his belief that “maybe the war is over”; it’s not a separate, tangential belief unto itself.

“I believe the war is over because everyone abandoned us on Crait.” “No, you don’t believe that.” I think it’s…serviceable. I think this whole conversation is “serviceable.”

At the very least, I think it flows better structurally than Merry’s “Dark science, cloning, secrets only the Sith knew…?” lol

Ah, I didn’t remember that was the dialogue preceding that exchange. Yeah, that makes even less sense. I haven’t watched the scene in a long time; the delivery of the dialogue could totally change how it comes across compared to me reading it in text form.

I agree that TROS makes very little sense. But I think this thread and this edit prove that sense is in there waiting to be found, smuggled in surrounded by a quagmire of competing nonsense. One scene at a time!

Maybe I’m just a killjoy, but the Kylo one doesn’t sound any better to my ear than someone doing a barely passable Adam Driver impression. To the point where I actually thought it was whoever had made the video introducing it first, until I realised it sounded “off” in the way that AI voices can’t quite get the inflections of sentences right.

Need someone to voice a line to finish my TLJ edit...

My two cents: Canto Bight is thematically all about how remaining neutral in a conflict is as bad as siding with the oppressors. DJ represents the temptation that Finn has to leave the Resistance like he left the First Order, which Finn ultimately rejects. So I think having them arrested for being part of the Resistance waters down the idea that Canto Bight is neutral, representing the amoral selfishness of selling to both sides with no regard to ideology.

Perhaps they could get arrested for a different reason - something more meaningful than a joke about parking violations. I’m not sure what, but those are the kinds of creative questions that people around here often come up with great answers to.

That all said, of course, it’s your edit and you don’t need to change your plans based on someone else’s opinions! You’ve clearly thought a lot about how the line change fits into the movie, and your edit might be doing something completely different with Canto Bight anyway. I’d definitely be interested to see the cutlist.

I still haven’t had time to watch the workprint, but I’m just chiming in so you know I’m still following the technical details you’re going through in the thread, even though it’s above my head in terms of contributing anything useful to it.

That’s okay. All that’s going on at the moment is that I’m trying to find a good balance in the color grade between accurate skin tones and keeping the grading from going full orange and teal like so many present-day movies often do. It’s tricky, but worth it.

On the bright side, I found that I can save more time by grading the timeline instead of the individual edits on Resolve. That way, I don’t have to spend days color correcting every single edit I’ve made while also ensuring consistency across the entire movie. So there’s a good chance I might be able to fix the issue sooner rather than later. I still have to watch the edit in full to see if I’ve missed something, but I’m feeling confident in the results.

I never did much colour correction other than fixing big obvious differences between shots, but I remember the people who were very meticulous with it would usually apply a standard grading across a whole scene, then go in and tweak individual shots for consistency. That was with raw footage, which I realise is different than working with footage that’s already been graded and finalised, but I figure the same principle would apply.

but as is it would mess with the pace and tension release too much

You mean provide a welcome break from the snail’s pace of the Tatooine section?

Maybe for everyone who is used to Star Wars that’s how Tatooine feels, as a kid I loved the mystery of the barren planet with the droids before meeting Luke. And yes if there was an exciting chase through a tight winding cavern in the beginning of the movie it would cause diminishing returns by the end of the movie, the sequence the entire story is building up to.

100% agree. The theatrical version of ANH has damn-near perfect editing, and I think messing with the pacing like that would be for the worse. But it might be a pretty interesting addition to something like an extended version. A bunch of scenes added for someone who’s already fallen in love with the movie.

That’s exactly how I feel, too. The Despecialised Editions will always be my personal definitive version of the OT, but I love having different versions with different visions to enjoy in parallel.

We previously discussed using Crait Luke in the original movie poster pose; while everyone’s tolerances for these things are different, I felt like that was a neat way to throw in an instantly comprehensible and inspiring image that’s never actually been in any of the movies in any form.

I agree that adding a reference the line from ANH would be a fun little easter egg.
