Request: TFA IMAX files
Time

Unsure whether this thread is allowed here, but I thought I’d try my luck given I’m searching for these to use in my own fan edit.

There is mention in this thread here of a composite between the 720p STARZ broadcast of the Falcon chase sequence in TFA and the blu-ray source that adywan put together: https://originaltrilogy.com/topic/Info-The-Force-Awakens-IMAX-Edition-Help-needed/id/51703

If anyone still has this, or any other version of the IMAX scene kicking around that they could send me, I’d enormously appreciate it!

At least at a glance I don’t see anything wrong with that, bbghost!

Thanks! What I did audio-wise was just nab some of the Kijimi ambience from when Poe first arrives and is running around the streets, then swap it out for the dialogue during that big sweeping shot where it swaps between the two locations, seemed to work just fine.

Seems to work fine. Although I’m kinda confused right now. Are we trying to make it so that Rey’s parents never sold her? Because I feel like that is a larger retcon than selling her to protect her.

I get the sense we’re just trying to work around the specific line “they sold you to protect you” because it is quite possibly one of the worst lines of dialogue in the film lol.

This is how I’ve managed to get around that line: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1b7m-2Zr8B_0USRM27MO1xQSdNxbFtgiV/view?usp=sharing

Granted I’ve spliced that entire sequence together without cuts back to Finn and Poe, but I think it the dialogue works
OK in context as is, just with removing the line. “Your parents were no one. They chose to be, to keep you safe[…] It was Palpatine who had your parents taken. He was looking for you, but they wouldn’t say where you were. So he gave the order.”

I do want to try and change that line to “had your parents killed” instead of taken (all of the dialogue on this ship reeks of re-write salad) but other than that I think it’s relatively satisfying.

Star Wars: The Last Skywalker Awakens - a sequel trilogy 3-in-1 edit (v2.5 Released)
Time

Still just thinking out loud here as I ponder some of the changes for the eventual and final V3: I’m considering cutting the music that I’ve added from the Pasaana scene entirely. I’m pretty happy with how it’s put together, but I think the scene might still be more impactful as a quiet scene underscored only by Kylo’s TIE and Rey’s breathing.

Removing the music will make this the only real “music-less” action scene in the film, as I intend to leave the RotJ cue over the Death Star fight. If anyone has thoughts one way or the other I’d love to hear them.

Updates! I’ve worked out a new opening crawl that I am pretty happy with.

Episode VII

THE LAST SKYWALKER AWAKENS

Luke Skywalker has vanished.
In his absence, the sinister
FIRST ORDER has risen from
the ashes of the Empire and
will stop at nothing until
Skywalker, the last Jedi, has
been destroyed.

As the peaceful New
Republic struggles to fight
this resurgent menace,
General Leia Organa gathers
her allies and leads a brave
RESISTANCE. She is
desperate to find her brother
Luke and restore hope to the
galaxy.

Searching for clues to Luke’s
whereabouts, the First Order
has intercepted Leia’s most
daring pilot on the desert
planet of Jakku…

It borrows from both the theatrical TFA crawl and Hal9000’s one for Restructured, but I realized recently that I also need to give a drastically different impression of the Republic (or the New Republic, as it’s called in other post-ROTJ canon stuff now) than in the theatricals or even the other fan edits I’ve drawn from.

Throughout this edit there’s virtually no mention of a central government or wider political context at all. TFA hit the reset button with Starkiller Base and it’s mentioned by Hux offhandedly at the start of TLJ but other than that the Sequels largely ignore any political implications (which was to their benefit, just imo). I’m simply following through with that and excising it from the context of this story entirely.

The line “the peaceful New Republic struggles to fight this resurgent menace” attempts to do this and bring the perception of the state of the galaxy in line with the new canon books, wherein the government almost completely demilitarised after the formation of the New Republic. This is basically why they’re of no help, and Leia is left going “oh shit there’s a big dark side-y army spreading across the galaxy and we have no way to stop it” and doing her own thing.

It also helps focus the First Order’s intent on Skywalker and eradicating the Jedi, for the time being. The whole take over the universe thing seems implied in their mandate by being a big evil fascist army.

At least that’s how I hope it will all come across. I’ll see if I can work that Hux line in TLJ to remove mention of the Republic or change it to something else. I will also likely keep tweaking at the title crawl endlessly, too (and hopefully fix that irritating bug with the commas).

Also, I have also begun working on subtitles! Turns out five hours of film is a lot of work to caption! I’m about 10% of the way there, so, progress nonetheless.

It could be along the lines of the theory that Palpatine/Plagueis inadvertently created Anakin/the Chosen One. They thought they could use him, but in the end it was their undoing.

Maybe Snoke did bridge their minds, which inadvertently solidified their bond and made them become a Dyad in the Force. So Snoke/Palpatine’s own machinations led to their undoing once again. I mean, we basically get that theme already since Palpatine indirectly made Rey by having a child of his own.

Maybe

I have no doubt that is most likely going to be the canon answer at some point (or already), and was the intention the writers of TROS had when creating the concept of the dyad. But it’s just kinda messy. And they didn’t have the opportunity (like us) to go back and change certain small details in the previous films.

Yeah, it’s certainly messy and inconsistent. Just another day in the ST, heh.

Sequel Trilogy Rescoring Ideas Thread
Time

In my 3-in-1 edit of the sequel trilogy I rescored the two scenes in TRoS that opted against using music: the Pasaana confrontation, and the duel on the Death Star II.

For the Pasaana confrontation I used bits from The Cave (TLJ) and The Ways of the Force (TFA), and for the duel I used a cue from Luke and Vader’s fight in Return of the Jedi.

Pasaana Confrontation
Final Saber Duel (Ignore the slightly janky cut from Maz back to the Death Star, I’ve since fixed this)

Thanks newmaker! Yeah the other edits that have used cues from DotF I think are generally implemented alright but don’t fit the intensity of the scene for me, rather than hedging I just decided to go all in. I’m glad you think it worked out.

I’ll PM you a link to V2.5 as it may be some weeks away before TRoS Ascendant V3 is out and I can implement changes from that, as well as building a new title crawl which is something that needs doing before this project is “complete.”
