Star Wars: The Last Skywalker Awakens - A sequel trilogy &quot;mega-edit&quot; (<em>RELEASED</em>)

Any alterations to the extensive changelist?

Indeed:

  • Cut some extraneous shots of various aliens around Maz’s cantina

  • Removed C-3PO’s awkward introduction that breaks up Han and Leia’s reunion

  • Trimmed and crossfaded a couple of shots as Rey leaves the Resistance base for Ach-To to make it feel less like the end of a film and more like the start of the next chapter of this story.

  • Trimmed back a couple more jokes during TLJ (Poe’s “your momma”, Luke’s Jakku quip)

  • Cut the “crowing” sound the Supremacy makes as it comes out of hyperspace (always felt at odds with how ships are depicted sonically in SW)

  • Re-edited the sequence of shots as Rey destroys the shuttle on Pasaana

  • Replaced Luke’s awkward “I was wrong” with a long withering stare

With some help from a few people over at fanedit.org (including Spence and DigModiFicaTion from here, thanks to you both) this edit is nearing its truest final form.

There haven’t been any major changes since its initial release, but the format is now in two distinct parts with a short title sequence introducing Part II. Several other small cuts and additions have been made throughout.

For now, here is a final teaser trailer for the project as it nears completion (I still haven’t given up on subtitles!)

I can see how that could work.

On a related note, apparently the idea of slavery being immoral was completely unheard of in the ancient world, even among people who had been slaves themselves, so you could make the Separatists the ones against slavery. Might not work as well though.

What does the real life ancient world have to do with anything

The Republic is fairly analogous to ancient Rome.

I’ve been playing around with the ending for my personal edit, which is a Rey Nobody edit, and I think I’m onto something that could be useful to others:

Basically, I used footage from HAL’s version and the theatrical to eliminate the old lady and the “I’m Rey” business, so we can end on a more emotional note.

Neat edit! Had a really good feel to it.

VFX help/advice needed: Removing Luke's reed in TLJ
Time

Hi all, just seeking a bit of advice on some VFX shots I’m hoping to tackle. In my edit of the sequel trilogy, I’ve removed Luke’s practical joke as it doesn’t mesh with the pacing of the overall edit. This does however leave a rather glaring continuity error in the form of his grass reed.

For the more technically-minded, what’s the over/under on how difficult it would be to mask out the flapping reed from both of these shots of Luke:

Luke

In subsequent shots, the grass can be easily cropped out and edited around, but these are the only two where it’s especially obvious. Both shots seem fairly stationary with minimal change in the background so my hope is it won’t be too difficult? With the possible exception of when his hand crosses back across his body in the second shot. Thanks in advance for your wisdom.

I have watched this and it is an astonishing improvement on the Disney Trilogy. It was actually an entertaining watch. Though there’s only so much you can do with such poor storytelling to begin with, it’s made the DT palatable

This is a thread of general ideas and brainstorming, are you referring to a particular edit?

Thanks for the shoutout, BS. I’d be happy to provide the separate audio layers (music, “force” sfx, breathing) if anyone would like want to use it as a basis for their own edit once it’s fully done:

Yeah this actually works surprisingly well. I think there’s a scene in DOTF where the Force sort of connects all the present day heroes? It was an idea I had thought about way back when, if instead of her hearing the voices of all the Jedi, she hears the voices of her friends, and that’s what gave her the strength. Completely forgot about that. Would be interested to see how it could be accomplished!

Since they were half heartedly pushing the Rey/Finn force connection, could it just be his voice that’s encouraging her to get up? That would sort of pay off that random story thread they didn’t do anything with.

I feel like it would take more than half an ass’s set up to make that feel earned by the end of a film. I can’t think of any accompanying Finn footage that would work especially well either. But audio maybe? IDK. There’s a lot you can do there, as is my intention in creating the blank slate of the scene for people.

Also, it would be easy to trim out Rey and Poe’s little meetcute at the end of the movie. They do appear like four feet away from each other at the end of TFA. I can’t remember if this was ever considered.

For my part I always liked this mostly for Poe’s knowing “I know.” I doubt Rey would have introduced herself to him at the end of TFA with what she had going on, but she’s a big deal in the Resistance.

Yeah, cool! As I’m trying something similar (and am new to this editing-stuff): how did you get the original scene so clearly? The voices kind of bleeding through all channels, so I still hear them when I’m just muting the center-channel

I completely re did the audio from scratch lol. The music is from the FYC score, then the bits where she grunts as she gets limbs on the ground were clear enough so I nabbed them and mixed them along with some breathing SFX i recorded with my partner and then applied reverb to them. A bit of work but it’s getting there, pretty happy with the results.

Something I am playing around with: removing the Jedi voices entirely.
https://vimeo.com/549085645

Instead of a chorus of random dead people Rey’s never met, she draws upon her connections to the people she loves and bridges the gap between the cosmic and the living force, or however you’d like to interpret the scene now that there’s a bit more room for imagination.

Alien Resurrection Resurrected (Completed)
Time

Alien

‘Alien Resurrection’ (1997) is my favourite of the Alien tetralogy, but with the exception of a few small moments, I feel that the 2003 Special Edition is a largely inferior cut. This fanedit amalgamates the SE’s brief worthwhile additions to the film into the original theatrical release, with its “less is more” opening and ending sequences and generally more understated approach to some scenes.

Sources

  • Alien Resurrection (1997) [Theatrical Cut/TE]
  • Alien Resurrection (1997) [2003 Special Edition Cut/SE]

Edits

  • Restored original title sequence, removing additional sound effects in favor of the original score up until the shot of the Auriga
  • Cut Ripley waking after surgery
  • Cut Gediman making explicit mention of “Fury 16”
  • Cut Wren making reference to the Company’s acquisition by Walmart
  • Restored the order of scenes introducing the crew of the Betty from the TE, as well as TE’s stripped back version of Vreiss/Johner/Call’s exchange in the cargo bay
  • Cut Perez and Elgyn’s extended exchange about Call
  • Cut Wren’s lines added in the SE during the argument with/about Purvis and what to do with him
  • Cleaned up audio in the extended SE chapel scene with Ripley and Call where Distephano’s footsteps can be heard as TE usually cuts
  • Restored TE’s more ambiguous and bittersweet ending, rolling shots of earth mirroring the alien-flesh from the opening titles.
