The “your squad” seems to be is his lonely bum in your awesome cut, until we see more small fighters in the background.

Heh, good catch! I did play with this a bit and ended up deciding to put the cut where it is because that was where it cuts back to Poe in his cockpit in the theatrical, making Leia’s voice sound like it’s coming in over his comms. What I imagined it as is: Leia’s saying “great job, you bought us enough time to get all the transports back, so now we don’t have to bring your bombing squad up to continue the attack on the dreadnought” and instead of doing what TLJ Poe does and ignoring her he just… follows orders, heh.

I’ll make a note and see if I can’t have a bit more of a play with it for V3, though! Thanks again for your suggestions 😃

Thanks for in feedback folks. Looking back on the day shots I do think I’ll have to tone down the fiery artefacts and tone down the effect in the cave. Unfortunately I didn’t get passana or our first meeting with zorri template from kewlfish to see his settings but I’ll take another run at it and upload a test scene soon.

Like with a lot of things in Star Wars to varying extents (how fast lasers travel etc) I think you can probably put it down to what looks best in a given context.

Version 2.5 is done and uploaded now, mostly reintroducing some small parts back into the TLJ portions of the film for clarity and pacing, as well as a couple of fixes. Will be sending PM’s out today!

This is where I’ll be leaving things until V3 of TRoS Ascendant is up and I can incorporate some of the changes from that back into this edit.

Just to keep things on track:

I’m intending on putting together a V3 of this edit with some minor changes and fixes, re-adding some of the Resistance’s escape from D’Qar as it has been pointed out (and I agree) that it feels a bit rushed and out of nowhere that they’re just on ships all of a sudden after Rey’s departure.

I’ll also be incorporating some of the other stuff from V3 of Hal9000’s TRoS Ascendant such as Leia’s purple saber (will still be leaving out the force ghosts) and the crackling/broken Skywalker saber, among a few other changes.

Thank you all for your interest so far!

I think everyone’s pretty married to the DotF cue during the Death Star II fight at this stage, but I just wanted to post this for consideration anyway. A re-score from my edit that’s a bit more overt and uses the cue from Luke and Vader’s fight in RotJ, which feels pretty appropriate. The only difference in my edit from Ascendant is one shot of Finn and Jannah being cut and the following shot being cropped to only follow Kylo as he leaps after Rey. Let me know what you think! (Ignore the janky cut away from Maz as I’ve since removed this)

It’s been really interesting in the process of this edit how many times I would be doing a watch-back and taking notes and going “wow, that’s a pretty janky music transition, I should see if I can do better” only to discover it’s what was in the actual theatrical version.

Stuff you probably don’t notice on a casual watch but if you’re going through it with a fine-tooth comb, all that glue and tape really starts to show!

  • Figure out what to do with the credits for all three films.

Play all of them at the same time. One at the top and the two next to each other at the bottom. Just like JXeditor’s Skywalker film edit.

I think they made an entire bespoke credits for their edit, but it’s a good idea. I might see if I can just plop all three credits sequences next to each other, it might look a bit janky but I’ll feel better for having them there.

Ok guys, here’s the final part of the DS fight : https://vimeo.com/492230855

I’ll try to improve the close-up shots of the saber in part 2 tomorrow.

And unfortunately, I don’t have the original material of the movie on my computer, that’s why I’m working with Hal’s version. But that shouldn’t be a problem, I can provide the After Effect files of each shot, then replacing the video with the original shot of the movie would be the only work needed.

This is looking great, Luka! Well done!

I’ve experimented a bit with adding the Caretaker villager sequence back in to the story, but as it sits it doesn’t do a lot for me. The effects are very rough (especially the dodgy wire-work) and with this edit borrowing heavily from TLJ Legendary, we have no context for the Caretakers as they’ve been removed from the rest of the film. I’m going to leave it out for the time being.

Only the very subtle ones that exist in Hal’s edits (Rey’s vision on Takodana, Luke’s second lesson) but that raises a good point, this edit may benefit from some heavier foreshadowing and I will look into possibly borrowing from those edits. Are there any others that you could recommend towards that end?

Star Wars: The Last Skywalker Awakens

Sequel Saga

THE LAST SKYWALKER AWAKENS

Luke Skywalker has vanished.
In his absence, the sinister
FIRST ORDER has risen from
the ashes of the Empire and
will stop at nothing until
Skywalker, the last Jedi, has
been destroyed.

As the peaceful New
Republic struggles to fight
this resurgent menace,
General Leia Organa gathers
her allies and leads a brave
RESISTANCE. She is
desperate to find her brother
Luke and restore hope to the
galaxy.

Searching for clues to Luke’s
whereabouts, Leia’s most
daring pilot has been
intercepted by the First Order
on the desert planet of
Jakku…

Star Wars: The Last Skywalker Awakens is a fan edit that condenses all three films of the Star Wars sequel trilogy into a single, monolithic tale centred upon Rey, Kylo Ren/Ben Solo, and their battle over the Skywalker legacy, meant to serve as a singular epilogue to Lucas’ Skywalker Saga (episodes I-VI).

Rey and Kylo’s journey remains, at its core, much the same as in the theatrical cuts: a story of lineage, legacy, belonging, betrayal, war, and family. This is not a “cut out everything I don’t like” edit, but an attempt to refocus and amplify what is already at the heart of the sequel trilogy.

Some of the more significant changes and additions include: insert shots introduced earlier on to mesh with their increasing use in the later films, removal of any planet-killer weapons from the story, embellished musical cues and sound effects, the restored IMAX version of the Faclon’s escape from Jakku (coming in v3), new use of musical score in two previously music-less TRoS sequences, an overall colour grading, and many, many others.

SW: TLSA is, at this time, still a living work, with several changes large and small still to be made. The intention is that, barring the unearthing of something like deleted scenes from TRoS, V3 will be a final and completed version.

Version 2.5 runtime clocks in at about 5 hours
Video: 1080p H.264 .mov
Audio: 2-channel stereo

This edit borrows heavily from Hal9000’s exemplary sequel edits TFA Restructured, TLJ Legendary, and TRoS Ascendant, as well as popasketti’s TLJ Rekindled.

Just want to pause and give some enormous kudos to Hal and everyone who’s working to make this shared vision come together. From small things like the re-editing of scenes for better pacing, to the lightsaber changes, the change in color palette, the pairing back of some of the most egregious dialogue. This is shaping up to look like one of my favourite fan edit projects ever? Thank you, everyone.
