Is it bad that I like the ‘Goonies’ moment? Sure, it’s contrived and cheesy, but it feels very classical adventure movie, very pulp.

Definitely not bad if you liked it! I wish I had enjoyed it, but when the dagger lined up perfectly with the Death Star wreckage from right where Rey happened to be standing, my eyes rolled so hard I saw my brain

Sorry if this has already been discussed but have there been any attempts to cut out the Goonies-esque dagger sequence?

I was wondering if it would be possible to edit that scene in a way that she has a vision of the throne room while looking out at the wreckage and then a camera zoom to the specific location.

A vision would be a great idea! I had been watching those scenes trying to figure out how to get around that stupid dagger. (It’s arguably the most asinine thing in the movie) If this is a possibility, I really hope someone is able to make it work!

I should have written it down because now I can’t remember!! Who’s DarthYcey on vimeo? I wanted to ask if you’d be able to export a ProRes version of your sequencing of part 2 of the ghost-relevant scene.

It’s the sort of thing I normally wouldn’t mind just recreating from eyeballing it, but any timesaves are immensely helpful.

Actually, I sent jonh my newly-timed version a few days ago. I believe he’s working on exporting a high-quality version with that sequencing of shots. I didn’t have hi-res footage myself when I threw that together, which was really just a (successful) test of whether shots could be trimmed and/or rearranged to maintain the existing music.

Yeah, no problem. Btw, you’ll probably go a more conservative route with Mustafar, but thought I’d share a mockup I did to extend it and actually further Kylo’s arc beyond a minute long fetch for a holocron. If people could get permission from these guys to actually use the footage in their edits (I haven’t tried), it could be a very useful addition. I’ve made enough test edits at this point trying to fix issues, I should just start a thread and take a crack at doing the whole movie. haha

I feel like if the actual fight was trimmed more (and if Vader’s lines were cobbled together from actual James Earl Jones lines) this would work quite well. The vocal impression really pulls you out of the scene.

Just spitballing for how to convey C-3PO regaining his prequel memories without then also implying that he’s lost his OT and ST ones:

Keep the scene mostly as is (comedy smash cut and all) but on the “Have you heard? I am going with…” line, have 3PO ‘glitch’ and quickly cycle through a few of his significant previous owner’s names before landing back normally on “Mistress Rey on her very first mission”.
Or at least a structure somewhat similar to this… the main idea being that 3PO’s ownership history database is updating itself in real-time during this moment.

The additional audio could be tweaked to sound somewhere in-between the warbled “memory restoration complete” line and the earlier deep voiced sith translation. Perhaps even wildly fluctuating in speed and pitch with some subtle distortion etc?

It would also act as a partial callback to 3PO’s mistrust of R2’s “famously unreliable” memory banks, as we can infer from the glitching that the data hasn’t been properly looked after by R2 over the years and has thus become slightly corrupted, possibly requiring some further tweaking later on off-screen?

Not sure how feasible this idea would actually be in practice though, there might not be enough time to squeeze anything else in if the line(s) were to stay mostly intact… But with all of the talent on this website, thought I would at least throw over my (possibly silly) idea!

Okay - that’s all from me. Back to lurking and being in awe of you edit wizards!

This is a really cool idea! If someone can supply the audio clips, I’d be happy to try to create the audio effect.

To be fair, everyone’s always been an asshole to 3PO. “Shut him up or shut him down!” I do think it’s a little awkward how mild this line reading is compared to Poe’s reaction though. You’d expect 3PO to be more hysterical.

I dunno what it is about TROS, I just feel really sorry for 3PO. Everyone seemed really extra nasty to him this episode. 100% didn’t earn the “One last look… at my friends!” line. It’s so being cut. 😃

After 3PO says “One last look… at my friends!” it would be cool to have a short montage of Luke, Han and Leia from the Original Trilogy. This would make is appear 3PO is accessing his memory banks of Luke, Han and Leia instead.

This is excellent! Is it in stereo or 5.1? Think it would sound awesome if different voices come in from left and right.

Right now it’s only stereo. The plan is to give Hal three panned files of just the mixed chatter for the L, C and R channels (we decided not to use the surround channels, as the fleet is directly in front of the viewer) so he can lay them on top of his mix, but that will be once we’ve finalized the placement of each line. I’m not messing with the original audio at all, so those files should seat in with the film audio juuuuust fine.

…actually, maybe during the “For Skywalker!” bit, we could try throwing two of them in the surround channels, one each. I don’t have a surround sound setup to test it in, but I’m assuming Hal does. I’ll send him a couple of isolated shouts so he can play with that.

Hal 9000 said:

And yeah, despite it being the original idea, reducing “For Skywalker” to just a couple voices is probably for the best. It might be better to even tone down the alien battle cries about Skywalker somewhat at the end.

And I can’t tell, did you maybe shift around the last check-in before we go to Lando? As it is in that clip it sounds like, and very well may be, the same female voice saying two things in close proximity. I think what was there before sounded more like a phone recording and was a markedly different voice. (I’m using my work computer’s speakers though, so I could be wrong.)

(Gotta go, can’t let the man know what’s up!)

You know what? That might be the same voice twice. It’s got Versio and then the “Minotaur”. I didn’t realize they were the same person doing both clips. Originally, you had a different female voice there, but it was one of the lowest-quality recordings out of all of them, so it sounded out of place right at the end. I moved it earlier and swapped with a better-sounding clip, so yeah, we’ve got two in a row from that person now. I’ll fix that.

I’ll also bring down the aliens at the end so it’s less muddy and report back. No rush, we don’t need your boss to know what the pfargtl you’re up to.

The the multiple shouts of “For Skywalker” in the tests by different editors so far sound a bit comical like some of the pilots are not taking it seriously. I’d remove or background the ones that don’t actually sound like a pilot ready for battle, and highlight the ones who did a credible job voice acting. The submissions maybe should be viewed as more of an audition with the best selected.

This is the approach I was taking for my mix. I’ve only included two “For Skywalker” clips in English, and two in made-up alien languages. The first one is great, but do you think the second is too comical?

jonh, I want you to send me some audio. You need to be included in this. It can just be a simple “Ship or crew or person name standing by”. If it weren’t already a ship name with crew to recognize I’d say “the Ghost” would have been perfect.

Poppasketti, FWIW (and I’m afraid the finer details may elude me), I like Option A’s trajectory and lightspeed jump but E’s little boost of the engines partway through. But I’m happy with whatever consensus emerges about the shot. Both are incredible.

Thanks to all with the audio submissions and getting appropriate effects onto them. We’re taking a liberty to expand them to the left and right channels rather than just the center. I like axlanian’s, as he kept my line placements more or less. Personally I don’t want to open with a prominent “9000 crew standing by”, not only because it’s my voice but because it’s a little too meta. So the line is there but it’s a bit buried. Could also be confusing, as though the whole informal fleet is being referred to as the ‘9000 Crew.’

So, the “For Skywalker” line had to be pruned, so further submissions should be check-in’s or other chatter.

And since it came up in Dom’s thread, in my head the primary version of this project will retain Rey Palpatine. This will be the conservative style that has served me well. But, I plan to release a Rey Nobody edit, perhaps at a later time, once that idea is completed by whomever, with an eye toward Dom’s project.

hahah I’ll be happy to send it to you … one thing, what exactly do I say? tell me and I record it!

You could make up a name for a ship and say “This is _____, standing by” or you could try to come up with a cool pilot quip about how they’re gonna win or something

Also, I think this is literally my first post ever, but I’ve been stalking this thread for a while now and everyone’s work is just absolutely fantastic.

Woah, mate…

Just recognised that you were the one who says “We believe in you Poe!” Your delivery is so perfect with all the lines you sent! Have you done voiceovers before?

Also, I can tell you’re from New Zealand, but do I detect some Aussie in you as well? 😄

For real, best voice of the bunch (besides maybe the Mon Calimari guy), his “For Skywalker!” friggin’ owns.

Okay, here’s my mix of the fleet dialogue chatter

https://vimeo.com/423025361

I tried to make everyone sound like they were actually coming through the comms, while widening the sound so it surrounds the viewer a bit for a sense of scale. Let me know if at any point the layering is too dense or empty, or if any specific lines should stand out more or be buried a bit more.

Magnificent! The comlink effect is seamless! Watching and hearing this was so moving.

Maybe you could move the “we believe in you Poe” to after Finn’s line, as Chase Adams did, and in its place put the Mon Calamari line so it can stand out a bit.

Definitely worth a shot! I’ll do that tomorrow.

I’ve got another English friend who’s done some impression work before. He said he’ll help if you need it.

I’d love to have both of you! Would you mind letting me know which lines you thought worked best?

From the video or added suggestions? Just let me know abd we can do a bunch of them for you.

Either one. Which from the video did you think work best? And do you have suggestions that could improve anything?

I would definitely use these for my edit. Great job! On Kijimi, I actually like the Palapatine wants her alive part a lot but in my edit Palpatine is not revealed until later.

Is that right? In the workprint that I have of yours, Palpatine shows up around the 37 minute mark, and the Knights of Ren are on Kijimi at 44:15. Has that changed?

We should try to minimize the KoR repeating greatest hits lines and snippets from Vader and Palpatine. So if we use “I sense her presence” best not to use “so be it.” EDIT: and vice versa.

But we could record multiple versions to give fan editors a few choices.

I’ll probably use “that’s not fair.” Fits in with the shrug well.

I had included the option “It’s over, Ben!” as an homage to “It’s over, Anakin!” Is that too much?
