Oh, yeah. And here’s another test, this time with all the voices. So, I believe everyone has been included, even though clearly not everyone is audible. I wish everyone could be!

Hmm. Did you lower the music? Compare that clip with this last one I shared:

https://vimeo.com/428168141

In that mix, I didn’t mess with the film audio at all, I just put the stems on top. The loud music really helps sell the impact of the scene.

Thanks to axlanian, here’s the intended-as-final version of the arrival of the civilian fleet. Awesome to have so many of you contribute, and it makes for a wonderful fan editing moment.

I think the version posted right before this one sounded better in the sense the more prominent lines blended better with the background ones and the sound environment, but still is a wonderful addition to the movie.

Also poppasketti’s rainbow look neat! The subtlety makes it blend very well

Did you mean my previous link? If so, that’s ultimate due to me trying to create a 5.1 mix without anything to listen on besides stereo speakers. Hal’s link is my L/C/R stems mixed back down to stereo. It was quite tricky to do. Honestly if it’s not sounding as good, we might try just putting my last stereo mix into the L and R channels.

there will be no more changes! I’m sorry, friends! 😉

I’m so glad you’ve put such love and care into this shot. You’ve fixed the disappointing climactic moment of my favorite series, and I’m sure countless others will feel that way when they watch the final cut of this fanedit (not to mention those of us here who have been lucky enough to watch your progress).

Thank you, Jon.

Okay, finally was able to listen with earphones. I agree, it’s awfully noisy. I truly hate not to include a clip from everyone who submitted something, but maybe it’d be better to actually hear what people are saying… That initial mockup had some chatter and calling in, with some boosted to be audible and others less so, but there wasn’t as much sheer content then. Maybe going back to having fewer clips, selecting those that sound the best and making sure to include the ones from people who have contributed to this project the most regardless.

I think I prefer option A overall, but maybe it’s just because it’s closer to the clip I listened to a bunch to do my initial mockup. I do think that the wookiee roar should be a little earlier, unless intended to represent Chewie himself, since it happens as the Falcon swoops into frame.

I do appreciate you tackling the mixing for this, and hope this isn’t a big setback!

Okay, new test

EDIT: https://vimeo.com/428168141

Moved the wookiee cry forward so it seems more like it’s coming from Chewie, centered the Mon Calimari fleet, lowered the background chatter, and tried to make the “For Skywalker” bit clearer without being shockingly louder than Poe’s dialogue right before it. Let me know what’s still not working, or if anyone has any ideas to improve the mix.

This is fantastic! It sounds so seamless. My only little nitpick, and this is totally a personal thing, is that I’d love to be able to hear Kaz, Yeager, and Jacen and that Zay was a little louder.

I get that. But since we’re trying to improve TRoS, it felt weird to have impressions of specific characters that don’t quite sound like them. If this were an animation or something, I’d bump them all up, but since this is an actual SW film, it feels wrong to have impressions front-and-center. Does that make sense? If we had raw audio of the actual characters, I’d be more than happy to feature those, but since we’re filling this in with fans, I felt this was the right balance.

That being said, this isn’t my project, so if Hal disagrees, I’m happy to change it.

Lol someone put a really weird filter on my voice during Lando’s arrival.

There are filters/FX on EVERY submitted voice so they sound like they’re coming from comms systems of various qualities (I figured some would be scratchier than others since they’re just random ships)

I like the idea about Dark Side noises you put together, though I don’t know if Qui-Gon saying “Anakin” specifically works. What else could go there?

It’s only stereo right now. We had planned not to put any voices in the back surround channels because the ships are all in front of the viewer, so I’m going to break them into L, R, and C channels. That being said, I definitely need this to work in Stereo first since not everyone will be watching this edit in 5.1.

Hal, the Wookiee was meant to be Chewie, hence the placement. Does that work?

I can lower the volume of the background chatter and upload new clips in a bit.

that’s amazing, looks like there’s real people behind those ships.
but I think the “For Skywalker” lines could stand more a little bit, it’s kind of hard to hear the way it is now and it’s super important line to understand why those guys are there.

Cool, I’ll tweak that in the next mix. Last time I had people saying it was too loud haha so I probably overcorrected.

Okay, party people. A LOT of you sent in voices for the Fleet, so I’m trying to find a balance between making sure everyone’s got a line in there while still making some lines stand out and not muddying the whole thing up. This is what I’ve got right now, let me know what does and doesn’t work:

Version A: https://vimeo.com/427444580

Version B (moved lines of encouragement to Poe to a different shot, not sure if it works): https://vimeo.com/427446625

Passwords are fanedit

Maybe the galaxy thinks he is dead but I think the ideal would be to have him in self exile. A batman like figure that appears and disappears out of nowhere, helping out around the galaxy as a form of penance. A symbol.

As cheesy as it sounds, this is kind of what I would have wanted. Rey and Ben wouldn’t be hooking up in secret or anything, he’d just become a wandering fighter for justice, trying to right some of his wrongs. Potentially with his mother’s lightsaber.

Obviously there’s no way to make that happen in an edit, but it’s what seems like a feasible story decision to me. He DEFINITELY could not join up with the Resistance and be like “It’s cool, I’m a good guy now!”

I think Ben needs to survive. He feels really out of place as a force ghost, and the movie makes it clear that Leia only stopped training because her son would die if she continued.

Except he still died, so what was the point of her not being a Jedi?!?

Ben dying makes Leia’s storyline even worse in TRoS. Cut his death.

Wow, those work better than I expected!

It would be cool if we added some voice effect to the line, “We will be one” as if we’re hearing voices of the past Sith collectively speaking through him. Same for when he says, “as all the Sith live in me.” And maybe that could continue once he drains their energy and reforms.

I’d be happy to volunteer for experimenting with this idea
