That Labyrinth doc is great. I went to a screening of the movie on January 8th (Bowie’s birthday) and, though I’ve seen it a hundred or so times, I always find some little detail I never noticed before. This time it was in a shot panning around Sarah’s room, in the foreground is a wooden Labyrinth board game where you had to use knobs on the sides to tilt the board and make the small metal ball-bearing get to the end of the maze without falling in a hole… I used to get those for Christmas fairly consistantly, probably had like 7 or 8 of them at one point, heh. Also, I’d never seen that Krull featurette before! It was a peculiar but welcome choice to use Tom Bosley (the dad from Happy Days, David the Gnome) as the narrator for that.

Yeah, there’s a lot of fun little easter-eggs inside her room, like the Escher picture that foreshadows the climax of the film, dolls that resemble the various creatures she meets in the labyrinth, the music box which plays the same tune as the ball-room scene. There’s even a figure that blatantly resembles Jared that is very prominent in one shot in the last scene. I suppose these are all clues that the whole adventure was a dream, kinda like what Wizard of Oz did as well.

Also, great find on those two Sam Raimi videos, I remember seeing that first doc when I was in high-school and fanatically watching anything 80’s horror I could get my hands on.

BTW, if anyone’s been wondering where I get the pictures I add to my posts, I simply add the YouTube thumbnail. I figured it was easier than uploading something to imgur or a similar site, plus, as long as the video is up on YT so will the thumbnail. It’s also a good way to spot if a video has been deleted as the thumbnail will go blank.

Usually it’s as simple as right-clicking on the thumbnail and choose “open image in new tab”, copy the link, ![]( paste link ), etc. But a lot of the time it gives you a little gif instead due to the YT preview feature where it plays a second of the video. In those cases I add it to a playlist, make it the playlist thumbnail, and then I right click that image. It can be a tad convoluted, but it works. You can also do a Google image search for the video and pick out the thumbnail that way, but more often than not you get a pretty huge image.

I’ve added a link to this in the first post as part of the “Posting Guidelines”. Of course you can all add photos whichever way to prefer, I just figured I’d explain this (sometimes) simple and reliable solution.

One of my favourite making-ofs as it really goes into a lot of details about the filmmaking process (especially the FX part), and unlike most BTS docs, which are usually not more than half and hour or less, this one makes great use of its nearly two hour runtime. Fun little bonus detail: Gates McFadden, who most will recognize as Dr. Crusher from Star Trek: The Next Generation appears in this documentary, though here she’s credited and referred to as Cheryl McFadden, which is the name she used when she worked as a choreographer instead of as an actress.

Honestly, if someone had told me 3 years ago that Werner Herzog would soon appear in something Star Wars related, I wouldn’t have believed them.

Ditto. And seeing Herzog in the Mandalorian was to me, in all seriousness, one of the highlights of the series. He’s been one of my favourite directors for a long time and Burden of Dreams is one of those rare times when the documentary is equally as good as the film it’s about.

I would love to gather as much workprint footage as possible from the OT, I wish I had full access to the archives back to the animatics and just how they cut together those old WWII movies for the trench run. Would be a great educational piece to recut the trilogy augmented with their original conception.

There’s been a decent amount of outtakes and such shown at SW conventions in the last few years, so hopefully someone will at some point bother to at least give us a little bit of the workprint just for the novelty of it, ideally, as you said, one of the scenes with WWII footage in it. They did release some of the original version of the cantina scene so hopefully that means that they have a print somewhere in the archives, but this is Lucasfilm after all, so I’m not exactly expecting a proper release anytime soon.

Unless there’s some direct mention of a partially unclothed Leia in one of the drafts or something like that I’ll have to agree with screams in the void on this, though I can see what ATMachine getting at with the last drawing (though I also think it’s probably just meant to illustrate the draping of the cloth).

However, this isn’t a conversation we should be continuing here in this thread.

As a side note; I just made a Making-Of Documentaries - YouTube/Vimeo/etc. finds thread in the Off Topic section if anyone wants to share some non-SW making-of documentaries.

They’d probably have understood it better if Lucas had gone with the idea in some Ralph McQuarrie sketches of Leia running around topless during the prison escape.

Wait, is that really a thing? I knew Leia were much more battered and bruised before they went with the whole “mind-probe” thing, but I didn’t know they went that far.

Either way, it’s so strange to think that SW almost became this really violent, typical 70’s sci-fi, type of movie before Lucas decided to prioritize the Flash Gordon elements over the Dune influences and make it more child friendly.

Since people really liked the YouTube/Vimeo/etc. finds for Original Trilogy making-ofs, documentaries, promos, etc., as well as the other similar threads that I and others have made, I figured it made sense to make a similar thread for the Off Topic section as well. I’m sure people here know of plenty of interesting non-SW making-of documentaries, TV programs, etc.

This thread doesn’t really need any “rules” as with the documentary and trailer threads, but a highlighted title and short description would be appreciated. Of course any additional info like IMDB links, article links, and especially a thumbnail photo would be nice too. If you want to simply add the YouTube thumbnail to the post you can do it relatively easy like this.), or just PM me with the video link and I’ll send you the image link.

There is also the Video Essays - YouTube/Vimeo/etc. finds thread for fan made videos that don’t qualify as documentaries. And I’ve made a thread exclusively for full films posted online that are in the Public Domain in the Public Domain Movies (YouTube, Vimeo, etc. finds) thread.

I wonder how the same sort of people that said Star Wars was overly simplistic in its good/evil duality (a charge particularly relevant in the murky moral climate of 1970s cinema) could also say the film had “no moral, no message”. Is it a film with too simple and didactic a worldview, or is it not simple & didactic enough?

I suppose Star Wars was hard to figure out after a decade or so of very mature, and quite often highly political films. Maybe simple good vs evil just seemed quaint at the time? I mean some of the most popular and critically acclaimed 70’s films pre-Jaws and pre-Star Wars was stuff like the Godfather, The French Connection, The Conversation, etc. Not to mention a lot of political dramas in the Nixon era. I especially find it funny how the reporter in the first clip specifically points out that Star Wars “has no sex scenes.” I suppose that was also unusual in the 70’s. Ironically these were all reasons that Star Wars become so popular in the 70’s. At least by the last few clips in 1983 they’d dropped the critique of the films and moved over to being confused by the fans.

As someone who grew up after the original trilogy had become established classics it’s always funny to me to see how snarky, and even harshly critical contemporary reports could be. Especially funny is how both the 1977 and 1980 report features the exact same comment that the movies have “no moral, no message.” I think Joseph Campbell would have a thing or two to say about that. One of the YT comments summarized this video pretty accurately; “Reporters calling Star Wars fans weird nerds for 11 minutes.”

Star Wars: The Making of the Myth - hosted by Anthony Daniels
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kv_4AV35I2s - from the marcus shepherd YouTube channel (40 mins long).

The blurb:
“Star Wars Documentary made to celebrate the 1977 movie and explore it’s creation, roots and sources. Presented by Anthony Daniels (C-3PO) Directed and Produced by Marcus ShepherdD. It was devised, written and filmed using rare archive - much unseen since the actual 1976 shoot - and featuring interviews Mark Hamill, Kenny Baker, Steven Spielberg, Brian Muir, John Jay and others with a unique take and involvement in the movie.”

I couldn’t find an IMDB page for this documentary, and (as darth-gary pointed out to me) despite some claiming its from 1997, and the doc featuring pre-SE ANH footage, the end credits clearly states that it’s from 1999 and was made by Sky Movies. It’s possible, and this is only speculation, that it was made for ANH’s 20th anniversary and then aired again in 1999 for the release of TPM, hence the unaltered movie footage. If you know anything else about this doc (especially when it was made) please let me know so that I can update this post.
