Pretty short video (4 mins long), but there’s plenty of BTS footage of Ray Park and Lauren Mary Kim performing in mocap suits, plus a little from the rest of the process.

This Twitter trailer for the May 4, 2020 Star Wars marathon on Disney+ features the film titles scrolling backwards in a crawl, much like how the title of SW 1977 was at the top of the crawl in the storyboards & early test footage.

And then afterward the text turns from yellow to white. Again much like early test footage of the SW 1977 crawl, which had white text.

Backwards? I’m assuming you meant the warping of the text (or “angle”, not quite sure how to describe it) being similar to the test footage?

OK, an actual “small detail” I never noticed until a week or two ago (also involving Liam Neeson):

You’ll need to go frame by frame to see it. As he whips his lightsaber out, his robes move in such a way as to indicate that Liam had the entire thing, blade and all, underneath his robes.

Yeah, you can actually see the tip of the prop poking out from beneath the robe for a few frames.

I don’t see why they did it like that though, since the droids are CG Neeson could’ve just swung the hilt-prop and it would have saved them the time needed to paint out the “stick”. Maybe it saved them the trouble of having it figure out exactly where the blade should be? However, I’ve seen photos where they used a shorter “stick” for animation reference, but that also allowed the actors to “cut through” stuff and move more freely, however I can’t remember it those were used before or after TPM.

Awesome! Thanks for sharing!

I LOVE THIS!

Yeah, he has such a great grasp on the OT aesthetic, and IMO his designs are on par and sometimes even better than what Disney SW is currently adding to that era. I especially like his Imperial Nebulon-B frigate design.

And while on this subject, he also did a video where he fixed a starfighter design made by Porsche which, to put it mildly, wasn’t very Star Wars-y.

The logo that appears at 0:39 is custom-drawn, though it’s obviously related to the logo used in much of the original marketing. I wonder if it was a candidate at one point for the logo to be used with the title crawl (which had white text in early test versions).

Also, those white lightsaber sticks are what the original in-camera lightsaber effect (using glowing sticks powered by electric cords hidden up the actors’ sleeves) looked like. It just didn’t work very well.

I knew about the lightsaber effects, but I just assumed that the logo was taken straight from one of the early designs. Though I haven’t seen this exact version, it seem like they just traced over the Dan Perri logo used for the Tom Jung poster. Makes sense though that they had to make a “new” version for the trailer in order to do the masking effect. The white logo is probably the exact same one as seen later in the trailer but with a simple white background added instead of ANH footage.

Star Wars 1978 Theatrical Re-Release Trailer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xx-ju1mUmEc - from the official Star Wars YouTube channel (2:50 mins long).

StarWars.com Trivia:

  • The first and only time we see the famous words of “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…” in a trailer, though it would still be mentioned in later trailers.
  • The narration combines many of the lines from previous trailers, including the often-used marketing line, “A movie billions of years in the making.”

I find this trailer to be quite fascinating in how mundane and lazy it is. It’s really just a lengthy montage of scenes from ANH and it re-purposes the narration from the original 1976 Teaser, though when its cut up like this and removed from the Vivaldi score it feels very dull and lifeless. The music also cuts out in odd ways throughout, so I’m wondering if they frakensteined this out of multiple trailers and promos. This would make a lot of sense as it contains the same pre-vfx shots of the Ben vs Vader lightsaber duel that was used in the teaser.

Star Wars 1981 Theatrical Re-Release Trailer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8AD7wzsPFQ - from the official Star Wars YouTube channel (30 sec long).

The blurb:
“Star Wars again returned to cinemas on April 10, 1981 for a limited two-week engagement.”

StarWars.com Trivia:

  • The first trailer to feature the new MPAA title card telling the audience that this trailer is approved for all audiences.
  • This is also the first time that the proper Star Wars logo is seen in a trailer, yet weirdly enough the trailer ends with the classic teaser logo seen in 1976.

This trailer also uses unfinished shots from the original teaser, but at least this one has a new voice-over.

This video sums up pretty well why I really love the Dark Empire comics and why so many people hate it. It’s a fun story that stretched the rules a little to allow a dead character to return so that we could further explore a set of ideas only touched upon in ROTJ, and I’ve always found it a little frustrating that the old EU, once it settled and hardened, never really dared to do something like it again.

I also find it funny that SW has ended up with some of the most nitpicky fans as it’s not really a franchise that ever seemed to care that much about the finer details to begin with. I can see why something like Star Trek need to adhere to more rules since it’s much harder sci-fi, but ironically they’ve always played very loose with the smaller details, sometimes even contradicting things within the same series.

The only time I’m really frustrated by a change or alteration on lore is when it breaks narrative cohesion or blatantly contradicts something important like how a character has always behaved or the overall theme of a series (though even these can be vague and highly subjective).

One reason the fans are so ‘nitpicky’ might be because Star Wars is famous for caring little for consistent canon and handwaving its details. Because of this, any current creator of Star Wars will feel (perhaps rightly) that the details don’t matter and everything is in service of adding drama to a story, dragging Star Wars ever further away from a sense of verisimilitude across stories. So now a fan who was okay with the moderate level of canon fragmentation during the OT may feel that the current level of extreme fragmentation is too much, and become a ‘nitpicky fan’.

This is all theoretical of course 😉

Yeah, and it does seem to be a much more “recent” thing as well. Though I think another big factor is the old EU which went through great lengths to connect everything and explain every little details. The generation of fans who grew up in the 90’s and early 2000’s seem especially effected by this as they grew up with all the sourcebooks and in-depth games that tried to explain everything. Patrick H. Willems wet into this in his What Do We Want From a Star Wars Movie? video. I think some generations of SW fans are simply so accustomed to getting every little details that they kinda freak out when its not give to them. And of course similar stuff happens to all franchises, including Star Trek, I just find it funny that ST lore is such a mess while SW always tries to keep everything as connected as possible.

This might all just be a side-effect of franchises that’s generally unavoidable as the stories start to pile up and the new generations of fans struggles to keep it all coherent as they go through it all retroactively. I think these continuity “errors” are easier to ignore when you watch/read stories over the course of decades. When you try to go through multiple moves/series over a short period of time the seams suddenly become much more apparent.
