Also, George edited Jurassic Park, and I don’t see anyone complaining about the bad editing in that movie.

I thought he was there to help supervise the sound mixing or something. Micheal Kahn was the editor. He’s been Spielbergs editor for years.

I looked it up, and you’re right. I still don’t think George is a bad editor, he just didn’t have much to work with for the prequels.

By saved in editing I mean exactly that, it’s no longer an ambiguous idea since now we’ve all seen what a slog the original structure would have been and how bad the deleted scenes are.

Yes, the original edit of Star Wars was bad, but the original edits of most movies are bad, too. That’s why editing exists. Star Wars wasn’t “saved by the edit” more than any other movie.

Yeah but what I’m saying is that we know what it looks like when George has 100% control, without these award winning editors, and it’s the PT. Those films were edited. But he needs those other more creative people to save it from his “vision” which is usually awful when dozens of yes-men are involved.

I think you’re missing the point here. Yes, the prequels are bad, and part of the reason why is because George surrounded himself with yes men. But that doesn’t say anything about George’s editing talents. The prequels are actually decently edited: the problem is with the script and acting, not the editing. Also, George edited Jurassic Park, and I don’t see anyone complaining about the bad editing in that movie.

STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 <strong>REVISITED</strong> ADYWAN *<em>1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION</em>
Time

Looks amazing, Adywan! I only have 2 complaints:

  1. I never liked the idea of adding a third moon to the opening shot. Messing with such an iconic shot for the sake of continuity with the worst Star Wars movie doesn’t feel right to me.

  2. The rotoscoping on the shot of the Rebel trooper looks pretty rough, although it will probably look better in the final version.

JJ’s co-writer on 7 hadn’t even seen the films he was making a sequel to

You mean Lawrence Kasdan, the guy who co-wrote Empire and Jedi? I’m pretty sure he’s seen Star Wars.

JEDIT: I just realized that you were talking about Michael Arndt, although I’m pretty sure he’s seen Star Wars too.

…and Warwick Davis himself has confirmed that they used him as a kind of Yoda stand-in for one scene in TPM, walking in a long shot, and obviously it was kept in the movie, and that whole sequence with fake-Mace also, seems kind of botched together, perhaps last-minute. Been a long time since I managed to sit through the whole ending of TPM.

It seems like the entire Fake Mace scene was shot in reshoots, probably to make the ending feel less abrupt.

To be clear, I’m pointing out Mace Windus head movement only. There seems to be a slight motion blur on his head as he turns…but it looks unnatural…like the footage was slowed down.

I noticed the motion blur, but I thought it was a side effect of the YouTube compression. Thanks for pointing it out.

There’s a lot more effects shots in these movies than we realize. Most scenes have had split screens done (to manipulate actors timing and pull from multiple takes within a single shot), not to mention who knows what other sort of shenanigans. That shot has definitely been altered a good bit.

Yeah…in fact, here’s another shot I noticed years ago in AOTC (again, watch the bluray for a better look):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unAu-1H-otA

After Dooku says, “I’m sorry old friend” and the droids re-engage their “arm blasters”, the next shot of Mace Windu turning his head look…off. I originally thought the footage was reversed, but watching it again now, that doesn’t seem to be the case. I just think it was slowed down. Everything else seems to be at a normal speed…then again, no one else makes a sudden movement like Windu does…plus Windu easily could’ve been filmed separately.

I don’t see anything odd about that shot. I think you’re just imagining things.

The Chronological Star Wars – A Year-Long Critical Reappraisal
Time

I personally think ROTS is the best prequel and AOTC is the worst prequel.

This is my current ranking of the main saga movies, best to worst:

  1. The Empire Strikes Back
One of the best movies of all time. Almost every aspect of it is amazing.

  2. Star Wars
A great movie, although it’s not as good as Empire.

  3. Return of the Jedi
A good story that was unfortunately mixed with burp jokes and teddy bears.

  4. The Last Jedi
A mixed bag. Some parts are great, some parts are terrible.

  5. Revenge of the Sith
Less boring than the other two prequels, although the acting and dialogue are still bad.

  6. The Force Awakens
A derivative corporate product that only exists to make fans nostalgic.

  7. The Phantom Menace
The good elements of the movie are overshadowed by the boring story and bland acting.

  8. Attack of the Clones
Almost unwatchable. The story is boring, the acting is bland and the dialogue is awful.

The Force Awakens - Ridley's Edit (WIP)

  • The moment when Rey one-ups Han Solo at fixing the Millennium Falcon is cringeworthy. Rey can be talented without outshining original trilogy characters.

I always liked that moment, mostly because of Rey’s smile at the end.

  • Ending The Force Awakens before Rey finds Luke is the equivalent of ending A New Hope before Luke blows up the Death Star. Finding Luke is the central goal in The Force Awakens, just as destroying the Death Star is the central goal in A New Hope. Every complete story must answer whether the hero’s quest ends in success or failure.

I agree with this. I’ve never understood why all the TFA edits cut the ending. It’s a great scene, and cutting it leaves the movie without a proper ending.

I would recommend the following changes:

  • After Hux says, “We have them tied on the end of a string,” cut to Kylo entering the throne room and Snoke saying “Tied on a string indeed.”

  • Move the deleted scene of Luke mourning Han’s death to right after he says, “Where’s Han”

  • Cut the Tie Fighters shooting the bridge and Leia blasting into space and flying back

  • Cut Finn and Rose’s subplot and Poe and Holdo’s subplot

  • Reinstate the caretaker scenes and Luke’s third lesson

  • Replace Holdo with Admiral Ackbar in the hyperspace Kamikaze attack (borrowing shots from Ivan Ortega)

  • Re-edit Finn’s sacrifice so that an AT-AT shoots down Rose, Finn tries to sacrifice himself, then an AT-AT shoots him down.

That goes against all of Hal’s intentions for this edit. If you want those changes, you should make your own edit.
