I don’t think that’s a good idea. It would just change the line from imitating Endgame to imitating Return of the King:

Witch King: No man can defeat me!
Eowyn: And I am no man.

Nobody’s imitating anyone else here, it’s just common movie talk. I’m sure it’s been done hundreds of times.

I know, but a lot of people say that “I am all the Jedi” is an imitation of Endgame, including the person who made that suggestion, so I was just providing a counterpoint.

But Hux throwing a coup against Kylo felt like such a huge set up. I find it weird JJ and Terrio watched that, saw that final look Hux have Kylo in TLJ, and said, “Well shit, we gotta get rid of Hux now…”

They probably based their script on on a rage filled bullet pointed post on saltierthancrait.

And the stupid thing is, the people on STC didn’t even like the movie anyway. In their attempt to please the complainers, they fundamentally misunderstood what those people were complaining about.

Yeah, the editing is by far one of the worst parts of the movie. So many dangling plot threads are left with no explanation. I actually think that some of the editing problems can be fixed by cutting even more footage, removing stuff like the Mustafar scene and Finn wanting to tell Rey something. Not sure what you’re talking about with the desert scenes though, they made sense to me.

We will complete the mission.

“If this mission fails, it was all for nothing. All we’ve done, all this time…”

Speaking of, are you going to play around with cutting the second (third?) instance of that line?

I don’t think this is necessary. It’s a nice callback, and I think you’re imagining the third one. They only say it two times.

So I found a video on youtube where in the audience reaction video from 1980. Vader literally says “No Luke, I Am Your Father.” Thoughts??? There’s obvious editing but could it be there were audio versions of that in theaters. Could it be this is how the common “Luke I Am You Father”, comes from??? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZCo_hZLyh0

Someone in the comments explained it. It was recorded by someone who worked at a local news station in Phoenix, Arizona. The different line is just a glitch, not an audio change.

If I had to decide the worst scene of every movie, I would say:

SW’77: The trash compactor
ANH-SE: Han meets Jabba
ESB: The asteroid slug
ESB-SE: Vader’s shuttle
ROTJ: Ewoks kill stormtroopers
ROTJ-SE: Jedi Rocks
TPM: Jar-Jar’s introduction
AOTC: The fireplace scene
ROTS: Anakin kills younglings
TFA: “It’s another Death Star”
TLJ: The space horse chase
TROS: “You are a Palpatine”

I can’t decide which moment is the worst out of all of them.

You forgot to pick a scene from Rogue One and Solo.

Yeah, I forgot. Sometimes I forget those movies even existed. If I had to pick the worst scene, I would choose:

Rogue One: Walrus Man’s cameo
Solo: Han getting his name

Lucas/Chew/Hirsch did the same thing more than a few times in 1977, IIRC.

I don’t think it’s insulting really. It’s just editing. The whole thing is a trick. Some tricks are better than others.

That there’s a big Zapruder-like YouTube video “exposing” it seems odd, to me. “They’re trying to fool you, but we see through their attempts!” Of course they’re trying to fool you. They’re filmmakers.

Yeah, I’ve never liked the Plinkett-style videos that take a thousand nitpicks and pass it off as “objective criticism”. It just seems like reaching to get as much criticism as possible, and by extension make the movies seem as bad as possible. If you applied the same style of criticism to the OT, those movies would seem like the worst movies of all time. I was just pointing out that I noticed this editing quirk before, I wasn’t saying I have a problem with it.

I’d love to see a parody Plinkett video on why Empire Strikes Back is an objectively bad movie.

“When the ion cannons hit a Star Destroyer, why does it sink like a boat? Everyone knows that there’s no gravity in space! Irvin Kershner ruined the franchise forever!”

Get over it.

We’re in a fan edit thread. Not getting over things is the only way we can fix them. I think he should be allowed to criticize. Whether his criticisms are valid is another question, but you shouldn’t just try to shut him up like this.

In fairness, it’s not just that his criticisms are bad, but there’s no way to accomplish what he wants. In which case my suggestion is legitimately the best thing he can do.

You’re probably right. His criticisms do belong more in the rewrite thread.

He’s already done episodes for some other parts of the script, focused on Kylo’s journey:

  • Luke needs to survive Episode VIII.

I actually would like this, for the same reason I’d like Ben to survive. I think Luke deserves more time to redeem himself, rather than just die from over-exertion after doing one good thing. This isn’t really feasible through editing though.

  • Rey needs to be Luke’s lost daugther, that was hinted at in TFA and I still feel Kasdan and Abrams were going that way until VIII, Johnson and Kennedy derailed everything.

I absolutely hate this idea, for two reasons:

  1. Rey is more interesting as a nobody. If Rey just turned out to be another Skywalker, it would make the sequel trilogy seem boring and cliche. It’s much more ironic for a complete nobody to be the hero this time.
  2. There is zero evidence that JJ originally planned for Rey to be a Skywalker. All evidence, even before the release of TLJ, points to Rey being a nobody from the start. Terrio was the one who derailed it with his stupid Rey Palpatine reveal.

Because of that, I think Rey Nobody is the only way to go for a fan edit of the sequel trilogy. It’s by far the most interesting and thematically coherent option.
