Unusual <strong>Sequel Trilogy</strong> Radical Redux Ideas Thread

If you just hate Palpatine’s return because it was in the EU, then fine. But Darth Jar Jar is an objectively worse idea, purely because Jar Jar has never been established as a villainous force. And I’m not too concerned about “diminishing Anakin’s sacrifice”, since the whole Chosen One thing was a dumb idea in the first place.

If you’re making a parody edit, yes. But for a serious edit, it’s a terrible idea.

It’s the same “it was me all along” plot idea as Palpatine’s return, no less silly in my opinion.

Except Palpatine is already a well-established villain character, who has been teased to know something about cheating death. Jar Jar is just a stupid clown who does nothing over the entire prequel trilogy. Not to defend TROS, but Palpatine’s return is way less silly than Darth Jar Jar.

It’s extremely likely that neither JJ, KK, or Rian read Aftermath, or indeed most EU books. Maybe they read a wiki summary at best.

The directors and Disney in general don’t really care about the canon as much as the fandom does. Pablo probably has a headache with every new script that comes out as he has to explain the latest contraction.

I know that, especially since TROS clearly contradicted the new canon at several points. But it’s still evidence that the whole “emergency powers” thing was intended to be Sidious manipulating Jar Jar, not the other way around.

He was, but Sidious clearly manipulated him to do it. There’s even a chapter in the Aftermath trilogy where Jar Jar is shown as being an outcast for unwittingly allowing Sidious to rise to power. All of Jar Jar’s actions were intended for comic relief, not to show him as some sort of evil mastermind.

Can we please not do Darth Jar Jar? It would be one of the worst possible choices to make in a serious edit.

Honestly, think about it. Most of the “evidence” is just unfunny comic relief moments that the fans wildly misinterpreted. It isn’t even paid off in the prequels anyway, making it completely pointless. I have no idea why some people take this “theory” seriously.

But if you cut the scene on Pasaana, then you’re left with no explanation for how Lando knew where the Resistance base was. The earlier scene establishes that Leia is already in contact with Lando, and creates some conflict over whether he will return. If you remove that scene, then it seems like Lando just pops out of nowhere, which was the whole problem in the first place. It seems like it doesn’t really improve anything.

But he literally says in the scene, “Leia sent me a transmission.” The implication is that he was informed about the heroes picking up Luke’s search, and went to meet them at the festival.

I don’t really have a problem with Lando’s scene in the desert. Cutting it makes Lando’s appearance even more random, and it contains some important exposition about the hunt for Ochi.

Did anyone do a version of TFA that kept Kylo Rens helmet on during the Rey interaction scene?

DigMod did, in his “Heir to the Force” edit. It’s not very convincing, but it’s still an attempt.

Did anyone come up with a different way of Rey escaping for Kylo’s ship in TFA other than using Jedi mind tricks?

22Popcorn86 did, in his TFA Redux Cut. He added a voiceover from Maz telling Rey to use the Force, which then causes Rey’s restraints to be removed.

Who did the best version of TLJ and using most new/fan created scenes?

If you’re looking for the most fan-created scenes, you should probably go with Poppasketti’s TLJ Rekindled. There’s some amazing VFX work in there.

What is the main Star Wars Saga about?

Yeah, you’re kind of right. George can get carried away with his imagination a lot, and the whole “Anakin is the main character of Star Wars” retcon is dumb. But I don’t think you should just wave away the mythological aspect as a pointless distraction. It’s been a key aspect of the franchise from the beginning, with the OT being a textbook example of the hero’s journey. Just because the prequels used mythology as well doesn’t mean that using mythology is a bad thing.

Anyway I feel like I’m gonna tap out. I don’t really care enough about these silly “ST ruined a perfect 6 episode saga” arguments. I’ll have to check back in 15 years from now when all the posters think the ST is the best thing since sliced bread so I can tell them how wrong they are.

That’s not what I think, stop strawmanning me. The prequels have a lot of flaws, but at least they follow classic mythological structures more closely than the sequels do. George Lucas understands those things, while Disney only seems to care about trying to please fans.

You can’t read the full draft yet, but you can read a plot summary here:

https://makingstarwars.net/2020/01/i-read-colin-trevorrow-and-derek-connollys-final-star-wars-episode-ix-script/

I don’t think it’s much of an improvement. Mustafar, Coruscant, and Mortis are replaced with generic planets, and there’s a female Knight of Ren who only exists to give Rey and Kylo someone to team up against once Kylo turns good.

What’s wrong with a female knight of Ren?

Did you even read what I said? I don’t have a problem with the idea in theory, it’s just that she only exists to give Rey and Kylo someone to team up against.

I think the definition of the Star Wars saga depends on which trilogies you include.

If you only include the OT, it’s the story of Luke Skywalker. We watch as he goes though the hero’s journey, in the style of classic mythology.

If you add the prequels, it becomes the story of Anakin Skywalker. We watch as he rises, falls, and rises again, in the style of a classic tragedy.

If you add the sequels, it becomes the story of the Skywalker family. We watch as they go through their lives, ending with someone who isn’t part of the family taking their name.
