The Rise of Skywalker: Ascendant (Released)

Finn saying “look sharp” to R2 seems the same as Leia saying “take that expression off your face” to 3PO in TLJ.

Hal kept that TLJ line in, so I don’t see the problem.

Desert chase feels a little cold in tone.

That’s from Skenera. He did a separate color correction for Passana, trying to make the colors less warm.

Did you add the trooper saying “move animal” to Chewie?

No, it was in the original version.

Are you adding KoR voices?

I think Hal said he would, but Axianlan’s work hasn’t been finished yet.

Honestly what were they thinking when they made TROS and The Mandalorian BOTH feature a new desert planet. At least making it Tatooine eliminates one of them.

I mean, aren’t desert planets more likely to exist? As sand is just tiny rocks?

I mean, you’re right. Most of the planets in real life that aren’t gas giants are probably just desert planets, but I don’t see anyone complaining about that. I can picture the angry Reddit comments already:

“Astronomers just discovered a new exoplanet, and it turns out it’s ANOTHER desert planet. Seriously God, get some originality! The planets just haven’t been the same since Neptune was discovered, now it’s all just lame copies!”

The <strong>Original Trilogy</strong> Radical Redux Ideas Thread

Not sure if you’ve ventured into the deep, dark depths of the Prequel Radical Redux thread recently…

Thankfully there were a couple people who did a bit of encouraging for a cleanup so things are better now.

Hey, the Anakin/Padme scene is a decent idea. The editor has done a good job making it less explicit, and it’s a nice way to add some actual intimacy to their relationship.

I know, but he’s already planning to include an “Episode 7” version for sequel haters, so I don’t see why one extra version would be a problem.

But if I was on a desert island and I could only have one version, I would probably prefer an opening crawl. The first half of the first episode has been cut in this version, so it’s the only way the plot could make sense without all that exposition.

I don’t understand why people are in such a rush to include the Emperor’s message. The dialogue is okay I guess, but devoid of any context it just feels weird. It seems like one of those “what could have been” things that people latched onto during their post-TROS trauma, without any consideration of whether it actually works in the movie.

Which do you prefer - Team Negative1’s 4K releases or Harmy’s Despecialized?
Time

I guess it’s just a personal opinion, but I think that the 4KXX versions have much more than 720p of fine detail. There’s some stuff there, like the details on the Tantive 4 door frame, that haven’t been noticeable in any previous release. It isn’t as good as a restoration from the negative, but it’s definitely HD.

That’s actually not true, there’s still plenty of GOUT footage in ANH and ESB Despecialized. The inclusion of 35mm footage in ROTJ Despecialized is the reason why that’s arguably the best-looking of the trilogy.

I just don’t like how a lot of the time you seem to undersell the 35mm releases, saying that they’re no better quality than the GOUT, when they look much better to my eyes.

Anyone else think Empire Strikes Back's Special Edition is actually better than the Theatrical Cut?
Time

To give my own answer to the question, judging by actual quality rather than just subjective purism:

  • The Wampa additions are okay. The mystery surrounding the creature is reduced, but the Wampa with Tauntaun blood on its mouth is a terrifying image, so I’m fine either way.
  • The snowspeeder recompositing is amazing. The original scenes haven’t aged very well, and the speeders just look like grey blobs. Updating the original models with digital compositing makes them so much better.
  • Ian McDiarmid as Palpatine is a good idea in theory, but it ended up being a complete failure. His line reading is much more dull compared to Clive Revill’s intimidating performance, and the added dialogue just makes the plot more confusing.
  • The Cloud City additions are pretty good, but just a little too gratuitous. The added shots are just distracting, and they probably could have improved the continuity on some of the windows. Other than that, I think it helps give more of a sense of scale.
  • Temuera Morrison as Boba Fett is just a complete trainwreck. He sounds so disinterested in everything that’s going on, and it isn’t even necessary for Boba to sound exactly like his father. The original voice was perfect.
  • The added shuttle scenes are completely unnecessary, and distract from the purpose of the scene. By far the worst part is when the Falcon is escaping Cloud City with intense music, and then it suddenly just grinds to a halt to show a reused shot from ROTJ. Absolutely awful.

Over all, I think the ESB SE has some good ideas, but some bad ideas too. I mostly prefer the theatrical cut.

A '<strong>Rumour and News</strong>' thread for reported new Star Wars films and tv series

I have also heard these Doomcock rumors but not from him which is probably why I have different take on them. From what I gathered, it sounded less like “erasing the Sequel Trilogy” or even “resetting”; it sounded more like opening to all possibilities. It sounded to me to be a lot like a comic book-style multiverse or even like Lucas’ old approach to canon. So, in theory, they can have all the current Sequel Trilogy stuff on one side and the old EU stuff on the other side with possible new material picking up after the Fate of the Jedi series. That’s what it sounded like to me anyways and I could be wrong. It does seem like some people really think they’re going to just kick the Sequel Trilogy and be done with it. I seriously doubt that will ever happen, despite how much I want them to. It’s not like Disney can just wipe the slate and try again so I think people are naive if they think that’s what is going to happen.

Regardless of your interpretation, it’s completely fake, and will probably never happen. Disney is probably more interested in quietly sweeping the sequels under the rug rather than outright decanonizing them.

Star Wars: <strong>The Rise Of Skywalker</strong> Redux Ideas thread

Here’s the original link that got deleted from Reddit, just for pure comedic value:

I will never understand why these people create these elaborate fake “leaks” just to make themselves feel better. It just makes them look pathetic and unable to get over anything.
