Haven’t seen RotJ yet.
Wait, what? You’ve seen every single other Star Wars movie, but still haven’t seen that one?

Well you’ll have to get very creative to explain how a former Galactic capital home to trillions is now an unreachable MacGuffin (unless you get rid of the wayfinder hunt subplot somehow).
My plan is for the Sith Eternal being underground in the Sith Temple deep below the Jedi Temple. The city is intact and the planet is not hidden. It’s just no one realizes it’s Exegol.
Doesn’t sound very feasible. And from what I remember, didn’t this whole conversation start with you criticizing someone’s prequel ideas for being unfeasible? Ironic.
The CGI replacements have aged worse than the original shots.
This. Not to mention that the compositional changes and editing changes are worse for many of the shot replacements.
Take the opening approach past the planet for example. They changed two distinct shots into a single moving shot where the order of the angles is reversed. That shot replacement is not only worse compositionally and ill-fitting to the visual style of the film, but it also changes the editing of the sequence and ignores the timed musical cue.
Another good example is the “lock s-foils” approaching shot. In the original shot, the x-wings are in a formation, and the imagery is striking. In the SE shot, the x-wings don’t appear to be in any sort of formation, and the altered composition and movement makes the shot far less visually striking.
I think you’re looking into it too much. The shots do lose a tiny bit of compositional appeal, but that was done in service of greater realism and more dynamic motion. It’s not a game-breaker to my eyes.
I’m not looking into anything too much. I’m looking at precisely what is visible on screen and determining that the CGI replacements are artistically inferior to the original shots.
Well, I’m looking at precisely what is visible on screen and determining that the SE space shots look better. Like I said, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
Admittedly, the CGI models needed […] motion that fit with ROTJ-period effects,
Um… why not have motion that fit with Star Wars-period effects? ROTJ wasn’t shot like SW.
Because the effects in the original movie, to be perfectly frank, weren’t as good as the other two. Back then, they only had the technology to show spaceships moving in straight lines, and big battle scenes like the Yavin battle looked kind of iffy because of it. The new effects of the ANH-SE space scenes really help bring that movie more in line with the dynamic motion of the other two movies.
Star Wars was not shot like the other two movies.
I know it wasn’t. I’m just saying that the way they shot the space shots in the first movie doesn’t look very good nowadays, and I think it deserves an update.

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. I may have been hasty to call it “indisputably better”, but it certainly looks much better to me. The original effects haven’t aged very well in my eyes.
I’m still not sure that’s actually a mistake. It’s a tracking shot following these fast-moving spaceships as they travel around the curvature of a planet, so there really isn’t any proper frame of reference there. And the SE Yavin battle is indisputably better purely because of the increased dynamic motion.
Hey, at least it’s better than “regular-looking human with a weird forehead,” like we got a thousand times in Star Trek.
Which leads me to my next unpopular opinion: Discovery’s Klingons look better than any previous design for them. The only problem with them is the fact that they clearly contradict their already established appearance, with no apparent explanation as to why.
I don’t really see the need to aggressively remove all traces of the SE from everything that references them. Like it or not, those are the canon versions now, and the changes that have been referenced so far are not really ones I’m bothered by.
I was riffing on the classic Maul=Grievous approach.
If you really wanted to have an equivalent of that for the OT, why not have Tarkin and Palpatine be the same character? His wrinkles would be explained by being caught in the Death Star explosion.
Are we sure that Fated-Dualist isn’t an oojason sock? 😉
In all seriousness, nice threads! I’m sure these will be good resources. Just one problem though, did you really need to put the Yavin gif in every single thread? It gets a bit repetitive seeing it six times in a row.
My guess would probably be the article on breasts:

It’s clearly just an excuse for horny nerds to post revealing pictures of Star Wars girls.
I was actually reminded more of the movie Tremors with the Krayt dragon than I was of Dune. In fact, the entire episode seemed like a whole plot reference to that movie. A small desert town is menaced by a sand monster that picks up vibrations, causing the inhabitants of the town to band together and defeat the monster using clever trickery? It felt like this season’s answer to the Seven Samurai reference that was Season 1, Episode 4.
I just watched the latest episode, and WOW. This is probably the best episode of Mando so far.
I always thought the episode lengths of season 1 were way too short, so this one being 50 minutes long really helped. It especially works for this one, because it’s a one-shot problem of the week type story. Timothy Oliphant as Cobb Vanth was a welcome presence, and I loved how they recapped his backstory for people (like me) who didn’t read the Aftermath books.
Unfortunately, the reveal of that one guy was spoiled for me, but I was still insanely hyped when I saw his cameo at the end. I really loved this episode, and I’m looking forward to seeing what else this season brings us.
Old EU: All the stupid super-weapons.
New EU: The uncontrollable flatulence at Snap Wexley’s wedding.
Sometimes I doubt if Ronster has even seen the movie.
You know guys, I like smudgers work so much that I think I will Just wait with watching the s02 of the show until I ll have watched his movie fanedit, So I could watch it without any spoilers and then watch the show as an extended version 🖖🏼
You probably shouldn’t. Some of the stuff that Smudger cut from season 1 will seemingly be important in season 2, so you should watch the actual show first.
Time will tell, but I don’t think I cut anything crucial. I suspect sufficient exposition will be given in season 2.
Well, from what we’ve seen so far, Mando will have to return to Tatooine at some point, and they’ll probably bring the events of episode 5 into it. Also, it seems like the blue guy from the opening scene of episode 1 will be making a return.
So I wouldn’t recommend watching season 2 for someone who has only watched this edit beforehand. But then again, I just don’t like the idea of someone seeing a fan edit before the original source material in the first place.

The what?
Threepio’s moment from AOTC where he got his head replaced with a battle droid head. I gotta agree it was pretty awful.
I think 8 posited the best explanation we’re likely to get - her strength in the Force arose as a reaction to Kylo’s Dark Side. Sure, she said that something has ‘always been there’, but any bloodline explanation compounds the coincidence of living next to the Map to Luke and the Millennium Falcon and finding BB-8. Her being a true nobody was the only way that wasn’t entirely laughable on its face.
But coincidences like that have happened in Star Wars before. Remember when Darth Vader captured Darth Vader’s daughter, who sent Darth Vader’s robots on a mission to find Darth Vader’s master, and those robots ended up running into Darth Vader’s son along the way? All without anyone realizing those connections?
Star Wars thrives on coincidences, so I don’t think you should rag on the sequels for it.
The difference is that it’s not purely coincidence that Vader’s master was the person Leia was searching for to stop…Vader and the Empire. It also isn’t a stretch that Vader’s master wanted to be in close proximity to Vader’s son. These things are connected in a way that isn’t mere coincidence.
The daughter and droids coincidence was made by later films, which kinda proves my point.
Yes, they did do a retroactive justification, but that doesn’t mean it was never an issue in the first place. And just because a weird plot issue was introduced by later films doesn’t mean it isn’t an issue either. Like I said from the beginning, I’m just trying to prove that Disney didn’t start the Star Wars franchise’s obsession with weird coincidences.

I don’t think this is intended to be a way of “burying the original,” given that info about the original is still easy to find online. Not everything Disney does has a nefarious motive.
And also, the original Holiday Special is an absolute trash fire, and it doesn’t deserve to be on Disney+ or anywhere else really.
Sorry but that’s just dumb.
From my point of view, recasting Han Solo is dumb.
Friend, you are crazy!
The actors in Solo will obviously never be the same as the originals, but they still portray the characters really well. I highly recommend checking Solo out, what could you possibly lose from watching it?
StarkillerAG, thanks for the feedback. I can tweak the shake for sure. I just don’t want it to look like George Lucas spun the camera around like Star Trek not so special tv FX.
I know, but the shake effect looks even faker. No offense, but I definitely think you should scrap it.
Pretty good! The only thing I have a problem with is the shaking effect on Vader’s ship, it looks way too fake. Other than that, good job!
Let’s not call people Trump, please.
I know, it was an exaggeration. I shouldn’t have said that.
“Exaggeration” doesn’t quite capture the jump from “I don’t like the change in colour because it doesn’t make story sense” to a homophobic white supremacist that’s killed over 210,000 people this year… 🙄
I know, it just hit me at the time. It was a bad comparison. Trump is not a good person. You’re 5 million times better than him. Please don’t take it personally.
