So the movie premiered on HBO last night, and I tuned in and cranked up the colour saturation to its maximum, and even though it’s just a minor detail, the viewing experience was a much improved one for me.

Seriously, this movie looks waaaaayyy better with boosted colours.

Yeah, the extremely desaturated dead-looking color grading is probably one of my biggest problems with the movie (along with the pointless spaceship montages). I don’t get why “real is brown” has become such a big thing with sci-fi and fantasy: pretty much the only modern show of that genre that actually looks alive is The Expanse (and even then it only looks half-alive).

The Star Wars Fan Edits Request Thread: Request the links to Star Wars fan edits here

Hi, someone here have the magnoliafan edit of The Phantom Menace? I would be really grateful

It’s on fanedit.info, just type “magnoliafan” into the search bar and you’ll be able to get both that edit and the follow-up edit based on AOTC.

I know I’m repeating myself, but if you want the links to one of the famous prequel edits, just go on fanedit.info and you’ll probably find it. You’ll need to download JDownloader to access the files, details are on the site.

Ranking the Star Wars films
Time

All right, it’s been a while since I’ve tried one of these ranking things, and there’s been a new show recently (which I’m surprisingly impressed by) so here goes:

  1. Star Wars '77
  2. The Empire Strikes Back
  3. The Mandalorian S1
  4. Return of the Jedi
  5. Rogue One
  6. The Book of Boba Fett (so far)
  7. The Last Jedi
  8. The Mandalorian S2
  9. Revenge of the Sith
  10. Solo
  11. The Force Awakens
  12. The Phantom Menace
  13. The Rise of Skywalker
  14. Attack of the Clones
  15. The Holiday Special

The Last Jedi: Stoic Edition (WIP)
Time

I was thinking about your planned edit of turning DJ into the codebreaker, and I realized something: if you’re keeping the character who was originally supposed to be the codebreaker in the movie, wouldn’t you need to get rid of his red plom bloom? At the very least, you’d need to recolor it. I’m just worried someone would watch the movie and think “Wait, that random background character also has a plom bloom? Are there two codebreakers or something?”

Also, I feel like you’d need to remove Maz’s line about the codebreaker “rolling on a high-stakes table”. It feels like it creates a bit of a contradiction, with Maz saying that the codebreaker is a rich classy guy and him turning out to be a bum in prison.

Editing Adam Driver’s footage from The Last Duel to make a better Sequel Trilogy.

This is actually a good idea, but there’s no place to put footage editing ideas, so…

All right, you want me to turn that into a bad idea? Here you go:

The footage of Driver talking to that gold-robed guy would be turned into flashbacks, implying that Kylo reached such a high position in the First Order by being Snoke’s personal debt collector. The scene of Driver raping a woman would be inserted near the beginning of TFA, in order to establish how evil Kylo is (like how Plinkett wanted AOTC to include a scene of Dooku killing an innocent person for no reason).

TFA: A Gentle Restructure (Released)

Burbin said:

I don’t think you can cut back to Kylo & co, because that shot of him is from after he gets blasted by Chewbacca (and it would get reused later when he looks up at Finn). Also cutting back to them in the middle of the firing sequence might make it feel like Chewie takes too long to shoot at Kylo.

In Starlight Chewie immediatley shoots Kylo and blows everything up before the Starkiller fires, removing all the following action where everyone starts blasting, and where Kylo looks up at Finn. I prefer it the way it is in Restructured, but I think it only works if we don’t cut back to them until after the whole shebang. Then it can be implied by the audience that everything happens soon after Han’s death despite taking a break from that scene.

Yeah, I agree with that. Showing the main characters’ reactions is a nice idea in theory, but in practice I think it causes the sequence to feel weird. You either have to put Chewie’s reaction before the Starkiller firing (which distracts from the intended focus of the scene) or make it seem like Chewie just stood around doing nothing for almost two minutes. With the way it was in previous versions, it seems like Kylo and co just didn’t notice the Starkiller firing because of the shock of Han’s death, which is the best solution in my opinion.

Yeah, that’s annoying. People are freaking out a bit too much over Omicron, methinks.

The people dying in hospitals from Covid beg to differ

I meant that Omicron is less serious than other variants and people are reacting as if it were far more serious.

I think it’s because of the name. I mean, it’s hard to say “Omicron” and not imagine some sci-fi supervillain. “Behold the most powerful Sith in history, Darth Omicron!”

TFA: I get that Starlight’s is a bit like Hal’s version but with more edits and little things removed? Maybe I’ll check this version to see how it plays then.

I’m not sure that’s an accurate description: Starlight doesn’t really cut out much more than Restructured did. Starlight is more of a revamped version, changing the presentation of the movie to make it feel less like the OT and more like the other two sequels. I’d highly recommend watching it, it’s a really interesting experience.

I know I’m just echoing everyone else’s sentiments here, but I can’t thank you enough for this, Hal. I’ve been invested in TROS fanediting ever since I walked out of the theater confused and disappointed in December 2019, and it’s amazing to see 2 years of hard work finally pay off. I can’t download the edit now (I’m on vacation in a place with horrible wi-fi), but I know this edit will become my go-to version of the movie, along with this site’s other collaborative sequel edits (TFA Starlight, TLJ Rekindled).

Small universe syndrome is here to stay in Star Wars, may as well get used to it. What’s the point of having all these cool characters in this sandbox if we never get to see them cross paths with eachother? Realistic statistical probabilities of people meeting eachother…blah, that’s boring. Never tell me the odds. Just lighten up and learn to have some fun.

Yeah, I know. The franchise has been having this problem ever since Anakin built Threepio, might as well just have fun with it.

Well, the cameos may have been well-integrated, but I personally object to the idea of having so many previously appearing characters in the first place. All those “remember this guy?” moments in recent Star Wars stuff shrink the universe way too much in my opinion: It doesn’t feel like a massive galaxy when every important character has met every other important character. If BoBF is gonna be another universe-shrinking cameo fest, I’ll be disappointed.

You’ve been to the LOC? If so, have you seen the prints of Star Wars and ESB?

I’m not the guy you’re responding to, and I haven’t been to the LOC, but this article talks about someone seeing the Star Wars print at the LOC. From his description, it’s a Technicolor print. The quality is mostly good, but the colors are somewhat faded and there are scratches on the outside of the reels. I’ve never heard anyone talk about the ESB print, but I’d bet it’s probably gone pink at this point.

If you could change one thing about every movie, what would it be?
Time

Alright, here’s my take on this. All changes are for the theatrical versions of the movies, except ANH which has the “Episode IV” subtitle from 1981.

ANH: Redo the spaceship shots to make them more dynamic (like what the SE did, but better)
ESB: Add more windows to Cloud City (again, like what the SE did, but better)
ROTJ: Replace the Ewoks with Wookiees
TPM: Get rid of the stupid accents on the alien characters
AOTC: Rewrite Anakin and Padme’s romance to make it believable
ROTS: Rewrite Anakin’s fall to darkness to make it believable
TFA: Remove Starkiller Base’s planet-destroying laser
RO: Rewrite the characters to make them more memorable
TLJ: Rewrite the subplot so Poe replaces Rose
SOLO: Make Han less sympathetic and more ruthless
TROS: Replace Palpatine with a cult leader who communicates with Sith spirits

Also thinking of watching the Spider-Man films.

Watch the 3 Raimi movies, definitely. But skip the ones with Andrew Garfield, and only watch the Tom Holland movies if you’ve already watched the rest of the MCU.

About James Bond though, I don’t know. It’s been years since I last watched those, and from what I remember they were all basically the same movie.

Wait, actually, I’m supposed to make the Death Star survive ANH. I think that’s gonna necessitate a custom explosion that leaves it partially intact.

You could replace the Death Star explosion with the explosion of Krypton from Man of Steel. That explosion shows the planet breaking into chunks rather than disintegrating, and there’s a giant crater in the wreckage that looks similar to the Death Star superlaser. I remember seeing another edit that used that explosion, and it looked pretty good.

Community kind of sucks. I mean, the show is mostly funny, but then they always have to ruin it by shoehorning in a cheesy message and tons of “heartwarming” moments into every episode. That’s really not my type of sitcom.

At least it’s not as bad as Friends, though. I have no idea if this is unpopular or not, but that’s probably one of the worst sitcoms I’ve ever seen. I could only force myself to watch the first episode, and the only two times I laughed were at moments that weren’t supposed to be funny.

Small details that took you <em><strong>FOREVER</strong></em> to notice in the <em>Star Wars</em> films

G&G-Fan said:

Almost like George Lucas designed the saga so the prequels are meant to be watched first or something…

I still strongly disagree with this idea. The saga doesn’t work anywhere near as well if you watch the prequels first. The prequels don’t work without having seen the OT first, and the OT doesn’t work as a sequel to the prequels. ANH was meant to be the audience’s first exposure to the universe (because why else would it be made first?), and the marketing for the prequels clearly indicates they were meant to serve as backstory for people who had already seen the OT. Like the guy above me said, they didn’t even explain what the Force is in TPM! Lucas’ claims that the saga is supposed to be the “tragedy of Anakin” are clearly just more revisionism from him.
