OK, for some reason, I'm not a fan of having Anakin saying: "You've *PROBABLY* killed my girl!"
At least the word "probably" should go. But that's just me. It just doesn't sound...right.

I'm not attached to the following, but have a look anyway:
"Not only have you killed many Jedi today, you've just killed Padme!"
or
"You've just taken Padme's life!"
or
"Lifeless she is!" -hey, maybe Yoda rubbed off on him!

The idea you're going for, Trooperman is great! And using other Chris Lee dialoge is a great idea! Any thought to using other dialoge for other characters (like Padme?)
Anyway, THIS scene is what I'm really looking foward to seeing! ...and of course the rest of the movie!

Again, if you need to take your time...take it! It'll be worth it!

Sorry, I thought I had replied to your PM a few weeks back.
I don't think I got it. But I'm also not 100% how to check my PMs...

I think its a brilliant idea and it does look much better than the red but, after trying on short scene, the results weren't too good. There is a lot of red colour bleeding especially on 3PO that caused a lot of problems, so I’m afraid I won't be changing that.

Yeah, I was afraid of that. Darn!

Oh man! THIS is stuff I've waited to see for a looong time!

01. new lightsabers.
--LOVE IT! I'm wondering...didn't you say something about improving audio in this release? Obi's voice jumps all over the place in this sequence.

02. The Falcon being persued by the stardestroyer...
--This is simply amazing. Isn't that a modified ESB falcon? Simply awesome.

03. a shot of the Death Star approaching Yavin...
--I actually can't remember what the original shot looked like, but this looks great! Blends right in.

04. New Death star view screen display, plus the next shot of Vader & Tarkin has been colour corrected to remove the blue glow
--Again, didn't really notice much, but usually color correction goes unnoticed in a movie...which it usually should.

05. Just after the wipe from this scene Han can be seen in front of the Y-wing but you can tell that only half the set piece was built. I've added the wing in the background to correct this.
--Sweet again!

06. As Luke rises in his X-wing from the Yavin IV hanger you can now see, from his rear window, that it rises out of the temple. It now seems to flow better with the next shot of the ships leaving yavin IV.
--THIS is my favorite! I've always wanted to see that!

Had another question for ya: Did you see the image I posted a page or two back?
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k168/SSWR/3P0_01.jpg
Does this idea interest you? Or is this going too far?

Thanks for your responses, Trooperman!
I used some footage from Star Wars, but none from TPM.
Hmm...yeah, I thought there was one shot...uh the one that seems to be a zoomed in shot of a Tuskin shooting. Anyway...

I was wondering if anyone happened to have a better cap of that shot from the documentary?

Wish I could help...I haven't seen that doc in years!

I'm thinking about maybe asking someone else to tackle all of the Upatu/Kashyyk stuff in the style of SOTDS

Interesting...you mean as far as editing style goes?

Anyway, as far as I'm concerned, you've made it clear that the trailer is incomplete, and you'll be cleaning up more for the final film. So I'm excited!

Oh, and my 2 cents for the senate scene: I'm thinking Erikstormtrooper's idea sounds tasty!

I think the compositing has something of a 1980s charm about it
Right, I think so too. I guess, then, I'm wondering where you draw the line as far as changes go?
The ones I pointed out are not horrible, but I thought part of the idea with this project was fixing the little things?
By the way, I'm not attacking your position, I am simply wondering.
You might at least look at that first snow speeder explosion...it looks a little pink.

Disagree. Maybe I just have never looked that hard, but I've always thought that the effects in ESB were the most realistic overall.
I would agree with you on that. And I am by no means bashing the hard work that ILM did at the time. Just my own opinion on a few changes...
I guess, more than anything, I just like the idea or experimenting with a 20+ year old movie.

Oh, I do plan on blurring the Falcon's shadow, forgot to mention that.

Cool. Yeah, I think that'll help.

McDiarmid will appear on screen and say the lines, but what those lines might be...

Hmmm...curious!

OK, just a few of my thoughts for the project:
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k168/SSWR/ESB_FIXES_01.jpg
I think most of these fixes are obvious, but I also know some of them probably aren't fixable, or even worth fixing.
The red check marks are the ones I would like fixed most.
Yeah, the hoth base shot has probably bothered me the longest.
It's so obvious that it's two different images put together.
Agree? Disagree?

This project is really exciting! LOVE the "trailer"!

OK, here's an idea for your project-...or anyone else who wants to try it.
I've heard lots of people say the computer screens in ANH look too 70's. Specifically the control in the death star where our heros hide out.
It would be nearly (if not entirely) impossible to rotoscope the actors from the backgrounds and put something behind them that is seamless, right?
Well, I'm wondering if there's not a plan B:

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k168/SSWR/3P0_01.jpg

I'm not sure how easy this would be, but isn't that much easier on the eyes? I didn't realize how ugly that red was til I played with the colors a bit.
I don't know how you guys feel about this. I know Lucas has said that the impirial colors have always been black, white, and red. But that's not really the right red.
Also, again, I don't know how easy this would be to do in this scene.
I took the image in photoshop, took the red hues and turned them blue. That didn't fix everything. Lukes face turned blue. 3PO did a little as well.
Well, whatever you guys think, it's always fun to play around!

Now it’s my turn to comment on the trailer! Alright, you know I’m going to be picky, but I’ll be gentle!

-Yes, I agree with everyone about Anakin’s voice. Just pitch it up a little. But yeah, I’m amazed at how much you sound like JEJ! It’s great!
-ALSO be careful with Anakin’s enunciation. His line “when I first started my training…” sounds like he’s mumbling. In fact, you might want to take the opportunity to change that piece of dialogue.
-I like the “at your service” line! Padme’s reaction is great!
-Yeah, I’m not sure about some of the color correction. The moonlight scene is a little…eh. But there’s probably no way around it, so I’ll deal with it.
-Love 3PO’s new dialogue! Can’t wait to see the rest of his scene!
-Shmi’s dialogue and scream *does* sound canned. You could add some reverb to her voice and make it sound more dream-like.
-The ANH and TPM clip will work, I guess. I know you tried to disguise the clips and make it more like a dream, but us fans will know. And maybe that’s not really a problem!
-Mace’s lightsaber: You gotta love it! Man, what a pain to do that frame by frame!
-Lama Su’s voice: Amazing! Great new dialogue!
-OK, so the dune footage might actually work! It looks pretty fun!
-The “I hope you like flying” line should go. But that has been discussed.

Side note: I think it would be alot of fun to have Anakin say: “I have you now!” just like in ANH. Not sure what scene though...

Again, I can’t wait for this thing to come out!
Please take my “negative” comments about the trailer to fuel your passion in finishing this awesome DVD!
I know this is really too early to ask, but: Are you planning on playing around with ROTS?

I was thinking about SSWR's ideas for the monster introductions. It would clean up the presentation, but it seems like it would be a little too formuliac.

I thought about that as well, Sluggo. I think I know where you're coming from.
The idea behind it (for me) is that it might feel a little more OT.
Just like you said: see the monster, you see the heros (or the person who is going to fight the monster) reaction.
I seem to recall this happening in ROTJ with Luke and the rancor.
The only reason I bring it up is because there never seems to be ANY tension or apprehension in this scene.
Will our heros survive? Well, they don't seem to concerned about it, so yeah, probably.

The idea was that Anakin/Padme had a plan to get out, and Obi-Wan didn't. Therefore, the emphasis is on Obi-Wan, and the arena battle is pretty much from his point of view. Also, in the new storyline, Anakin is still angry at Obi-Wan for indirectly causing his mother's death, and thus Anakin isn't cracking jokes with Obi-Wan during the arena. Also, the "bad feeling" line has been moved to the sequence before the droid factory, when the door shuts behind Padme and Anakin.

Cool! More emphasis on Obi-Wan? I can't wait to see it!
The fact that your dubbing Anakin's voice must give you much greater freedom to play with the overall story, eh? Much more than I've suspected!

Are there many changes when Dooku shows up? How about the Mace and Fett fight?

OK, I must have WAY too much time on my hands

Trooperman:
Are you keeping any of the monster battle?
'Cause I was watching it last night and a few things popped out at me:

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k168/SSWR/monsteredit.jpg
This could be a new way to edit the scene.
We show the monster, then we show the heros' reaction. For some reason this was not done in the movie.
Why? Shouldn't we feel some tension with our heros? Sure, they're Jedis, but, hey, these things look dangerous!
Now, I'm not suggesting that you cut it exactly how I've pictured it here. I like alot of the shots in between these shots.
But showing the Jedis' reaction could help alot. Sadly there's not a good reaction shot of Padme.

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k168/SSWR/Padme_Reverse.jpg
OK, we all hate it when Padme jumps 100 feet and lands perfectly undamaged onto the monster and kisses Anakin, right?
Well, I think these shots of Padme could work if you reversed the footage.
These shots are of Padme actually CLIMBING the pillar. Let's just reverse them!
Probably not the first image, because of the smoke in the background, but I think you could use the second.
It would show that, although she is brave and strong, she's not a Jedi and can't do superhuman things.

OK, I'm typing this quickly...hopefully haven't left anything out!

OK, has anyone seen MasterEdition.com?

I don't agree with everthing he says, but he's got a few ideas that actually seem possible. Check it out:

"4) Yoda’s first statement

Why: “The dark side clouds everything.” It seems too early in the film to be mentioning the dark side of the Force and how everything’s getting dark. Plus it seems rather un-wise of Yoda to be admitting his vulnerability to everyone including the Chancellor. In my opinion, things like this are usually discussed only within the Jedi Council. Either way, it’s too early in the film to mention something like that.

How: Replace the line with something like “Hmm, the future…always difficult to see it is.” Like this it’s more general, and gives less of a feeling that something’s up with the Force from the get-go. There’s plenty of time later to focus on that."

10) Protection and investigation

Why: The dialogue between Obi-Wan and Anakin when they’re talking about protecting the senator as opposed to investigating the matter could be done a little more smoothly. Anakin can still look disobedient, but it could be a little more cleaned up.

How: I think this is just a matter of cut and paste. Take the first line Obi-Wan says in reply to Padmé, “We’re here to protect you, senator. Not to start an investigation,” and place it just before Anakin says, “Why?” after leaving a little pause after the previous line. This way Anakin doesn’t look so goofy when he says, “We will find out who’s trying to kill you Padmé, I promise you,” and the whole conversation flows a little more smoothly.

11) Anakin confessing to Jar Jar

Why: When Anakin is talking to Jar Jar, he tells him that he’s been thinking about Padmé every day since they’ve parted, but here’s a question…who would tell this to Jar Jar?? And in that same conversation we have another example of ignoring kind words when Jar Jar tells Anakin that “Hesa bustin with happiness.”

How: After Jar Jar tells Anakin, “Mesa bustin with happiness seeing yousa again, Ani” have Anakin say, “I’m happy to see you too, Jar Jar. –pause– Padmé barely even recognized me.” He watches her walk away. “She’s forgotten me completely.” This should be a simple dub because Anakin is facing away from the camera and part of his dialogue is off-screen.

18) Anakin’s jump onto Zam’s speeder

Why: Anakin jumping from his speeder and falling hundreds of meters only to fall directly onto Zam’s speeder totally unhurt seems very unrealistic, even for a Jedi.

How: This can be changed by significantly decreasing the distance Anakin falls. Cut all the shots of him falling, just show him jumping out of his speeder, followed by the shot of him falling and landing on Zam’s speeder. He actually falls a good distance in that shot, and it’s more than enough."

----------
Anyway, if you have time, take a look.

This just now occurred to me: using Dune footage (and the like) is basically what Lucas did with WWII footage in ANH. Sure, we'd all like to see it (yes, a portion of it is on the DVD), but we wouldn't want it in our "definitive" version. Same with Dune footage in SOTDS (in my opinion).

As far as new music, such as "Mars", that seemed to work well. For some reason, in my mind, it's ok adding new music...rather than new footage.
I guess I don't have a good reason, other than person taste.
I'm gonna get back to you on this, though. My sister has a CD of a guy who seemed to inspire Williams, because his music sounds like something strait out of ANH! I kid you not!
I can't remember his name though (maybe it IS Holst), so I'll be back with a name.

MTHaslett: BEST. IDEA. EVER.

Don't misunderstand me. I just mean that if you wanted to chop out that scene for reasons of personal taste, you're not losing any critical information.

Gotcha.

If you want to cut out the Death sticks guy out completely there's an alternate angle in the Good to G.O. documentary. Also in there is an angle that focuses less on Lucas's daughter/Ahmed best and, focuses on Anakin. Just ideas on what you could use.

I don't remember that at all! I'm gonna check it out now!

1. That's one budget alien getup. Sketchy even by Star Trek standards. In fact, paint him blue, and I believe he is a Star Trek alien. You know, the white haired ones. And his voice sucks too.

Actually, since I don't watch Star Trek, I never would've known!

2. Obi-Wan says he's going to the bar for a drink. We don't need to see him get there and order it.

Well, stuff like that happens in Star Wars all the time...not to mention other movies.
People say stuff, then they do it. What's wrong with that?

3. I know the Jedi uniform isn't standardized, but most Coruscanti should know what one generally looks like. It's like trying to sell crack to uniformed police officer. Doesn't happen.

Eh, I guess I never saw them as police. I thought of them more like monks who know how to sword fight.
I get the impression that the Jedi don't hang out with many outside their own group or whatever.
I've thought that some might know who they are, but some might not.
So the guy asking him (not knowing what a jedi really looks like) if he wants to buy these sticks seems plausable.
Just my thoughts!

Hey, Trooperman, thanks for posting a Yoda clip! I was very curious!
Hmmm...I've watched it several times now. I think I like it.
It, of course, threw me off the first time I watched it...but I think it works.
I think I'll be able to make a better decision once I see it in context with the actors...maybe?

So I guess there are a few shots in the movie where you can't change the frame rate (because of actors)...hmm...ROTS will probably be even harder to do...just thinking out loud.

What's interesting is that the picture looks better flipped (like you have it) than in the original version.
Yodas face looks more symmetrical-...or something.

Oh, I had a question: how different is the editing of the last few scenes in SOTDS? Are you changing or adding anything significant?
One of the last shots of the clones has the camera slowly panning up and to the right (you know the one. the very red-looking shot that looks completely CG).
Well, if I'm not mistaken, that shot is split up into two shots in the original edit. I don't know if you have a need to splice them back together, but I thought I'd throw that out there for you.

Oh, by the way, the way you described the scene with Dooku, Yoda, Obi, and Anakin sounds awesome! I can't wait to see that!
I wish I could think of a way for Anakin to be hiding in the shadows...
I'm also glad you're cutting out all the lightning. Interesting to note that Dooku DIDN'T use it at all in ROTS...hmmm

Thanks for pointing that out, Marvolo. Ya know, you start coming up with ideas that seem to work, but then someone points out something sooo obvious and you’re like, “Duh! I can’t believe I didn’t see that!”

So, I would have to go back on what I said earlier:
I am now NOT a fan of having Vader find out Luke is his son…IN THE TRENCH.
But perhaps afterwards (as I also suggested) would still work.

- - - - - - - - - -

Sluggo: I can’t say I like the idea of splitting up the SE dialogue into another scene.

Vader: "What is thy bidding, my master?"

Palpatine: "The young rebel who destroyed the Death Star. I have no doubt this boy is the offspring of Anakin Skywalker."

Vader: "How is that possible?"

Palpatine: "Search your feelings, Lord Vader. You know it to be true."

This just sounds like incomplete lines of dialogue…not to mention an incomplete scene. Unless we had some additional lines to insert, I don’t see how this could work. But that’s just me.

- - - - - - - - - -

Max_Rebo
I think I understand your concerns about this Vader finding out about Luke thing.
I have the same question: Why does everything that happen in the OT have to be explained in the PT?
I mean, 3PO is Vader’s FATHER?!?! It’s a small Star Wars universe after all, huh?
I don’t see this idea in the same category.
If we are making a saga edit (which tends to put Vader/Anakin in the foreground) then this idea makes sense.
The question becomes (in my mind) WHEN does Vader find out? Between ANH and ESB? Lame!
But, again, these are my thoughts…

I hope I’m not coming off as a know-it-all, guys! Just throwing my 2 cents out there!

Man, that was a great idea for the digital Yoda! I can't wait to see that!
Basically, the first 2 or 3 shots we see of Yoda in AOTC looked decent.
The rest just didn't work for me. I'll watch it, but it still throws me off.
I kept watching from Puppets To Pixals thinking: "You guys should be motion capturing Frank Oz performance! Not making up your own!"
They kept putting emotion in his eyes and facial features.
But when Frank Oz performs Yoda, all the emotions come from the movement of the face and body!
In AOTC, Yoda turns his eyes to look at something. In ESB, Yoda turns his entire face and/or body to look at something!
This is entirely different animation than what Frank was doing. The got a few of his mannerisms down, but not his overall acting and movement.

OK, I'm done ranting!

Thanks for pointing that out, Darth Richard. I had forgotten about that idea.
Personally, I’m not a big fan of this idea. The main reason being that the only scene with the emperor (from ESB) would be gone. I understand this is the saga edit, so we can’t be married to how it’s always been, but no emperor in The Empire Strikes Back? I’ll have to get use to that idea…
Unless we are talking about inserting a new scene into ESB…? This would probably be just as difficult.

I’m just trying to find a way to convey Vader finding out about his son without a lot of effects work…AND minimal reworking of scenes. Not to mention having to find alternate lines of dialogue for the main characters.

But I’m certainly not bashing the idea either. This might be one of the easiest solutions!

OK, sorry if I’m interrupting, but I had this idea for the Vader-finds-out-about-Luke in ANH.
It’s a combination of stuff we’ve talked about here, and stuff I read over at TF.net.

We all know it’s pretty much impossible to insert a scene where Vader lands on Courascant (spelling?) and finds out about Luke. But what if it happened on his TIE?

Vader could hack onto the rebels radio wave (or whatever you’d call it) listening to some (if not all) of what they are saying during the battle. This could explain that little thing he’s always twisting around. (What-the-crap is that? A thermos?)

We could rerecord one of the other rebels’ lines of dialogue using the name “Skywalker” (instead of just “Luke”). Vader could hear the name and maybe repeat it: “Skywalkah!” as JEJ says it so beautifully! So now we’re seeing Vader realize that it’s his son on-screen.
But then, of course, Han shows up and there’s no time to do anything.

But if you don’t like that, we could have it happen after the death star going boom. Instead of rebels, we could have an imperial officer contact Vader with the name of Skywalker.
The officer could say something like: “blah, blah, blah, SKYWALKER…I will transfer the data to you and the emperor immediately…”
Vader interrupts and says: “No *couch* I’ll, uh, tell the emperor myself.”
Officer: ”As you wish, Lord Vader.”
This would explain why Vader seems to be hiding this from the emperor in ESB.

Now, just using existing Vader footage, reverse, slowdown, and/or rework it. If you need longer shots of Vader (because his inserts are pretty quick) you could find someone with the latest version of adobe after effects. In the new version, you can slow any piece of footage down significantly without it looking like it.

For those who wanna peak at it: http://www.adobe.com/products/aftereffects/newfeatures.html
Then go to: See it in action, then click Timewarp.
It’s amazing! I wish I had the money for this!

Thoughts anyone?

OR you could mimic one of the OT trailers like the original Star Wars teaser...man, what a horrible narrator was that guy!
Might be a fun nostalgic way of showing off your work...plus giving it a OT feeling...OR it could just be a pain!

Awesome clip, Trooper man!
Yeah, I would also suggest that you add in a few shots from ATOC when possible. Some shots of Mace would be good.
I'm also wondering if you could add in some more lightsabers and blaster shots to some of the backgrounds in Dune...just to make it feel a little more like Star Wars...?
I'm sure that would take more time, but it just might be worth it.
But I DO like what's happening!

Commander Courage:
A pan down to Dagobah might be exactly what you need for an opening shot. Maybe you guys will hate this, but I’m thinking of ROTJ in a similar way to Return Of The King. ROTK had a very interesting opening shot to say the least: a worm? A very quiet opening scene…just like the Dagobah scene would be…I’m not married to the idea, though…

Oh, another crazy idea for ROTJ:
Have a similar end credits sequence like ROTK where all the main cast members have their name and a still image. Know what I’m talkin’ ‘bout? The only thing is it would be hard to credit certain characters like Darth Vader because so many people played him.
Somethin’ to chew on…
