STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION
Time
I've wondered about the Jabba scene for a while now...
I certainly understand why Lucas wants it in the picture (looking at it from a saga stand point).
But I've heard good arguements as to why it shouldn't be there (redundant, screws up falcons introduction)
I've also wondered if Lucas hadn't made a special edition until, let's say, next year, would he have included this scene in the film? or would he have just put it in the deleted scenes section?
Back when the special editions hit theaters, we didn't really have any kind of media to show off deleted scenes-...heck, deleted scenes weren't wildly known about by the general audience...
Just thinkin' out loud...

Yeah, I wish I could recomend a Portman flick, but I haven't really seen any of her other films...except Mars Attacks!
I hear she is much better in some of her others films though....can anyone recomend one for alternate dialoge?

All I have is a pic of the fox logo:

Maybe this can help you make up your mind if you want to use it or not.
I have yet to see this logo in motion, but my guess is that it's pretty cool.
Much better than the original SW. Heck, it looks cooler than the one they use now!

OK, just thought I'd mention it again: have you considered looking at other Portman films for alternate (or even the same, only delivered better) lines of dialogue?
I know, I know...kind of late in the "game". But, man, if you could find better deliveries for at least some of her lines...wouldn't that be worth it?

I was wondering if you would be slowing down how fast the spaceships went by, because in the PT they just wiz by, but in the OT they go fast but not that fast.
Yeah, I *wish*! They animated the heck out of not only the ships but the camera movement!...just like Yoda...ticked me off...

I actually didn't do a lot of that. Mainly because I don't have very good slow-motion software and I can't create new frames in-between to make it smooth enough and professional enough.

Well, even if you did have good software, there would be too much motion blur on the ships...it would look way off...yeah, models still rock!

As regards to adding a hologram officer to the conference room scene, then i will be leaving that scene as it is. I would think that all officers would have been expected to attend the meeting and that attending via a hologram wouldn't have been tolerated.

Well, whatever everyone wants. I just threw the idea out there...

1. yes the sky does need fixing. That pink blur is really distracting especially because it moves with the camera.
--Sweet!

2. I'm filtering berus voice so she sounds more like she is there and not in a recording studio, also resyncing the lines.
--I knew you were fixing the audio...just wanted to make sure beru was specifically attended too.

3. getting rid of that fly is easy, but did you also notice that the treadwell has suddenly swapped places from the shot previous? So another fix to do there.
--Ha! I didn't notice that! Good catch

4. the cantina. I posted a bit further up that i'm tweaking the aliens in the cantina. I'm adding blinks, eye movement and some mouth movements too.
--Yeah, I guess I knew that too. But I had already made that screen cap so I went ahead and posted it anyway.

Man, I can't believe all of the things you're addressing in this edit! So much attention to detail!

And a no vote on the hologram in the DS conference room. It would just look weird. And who would it be? And why would it be there. I wouldn't want to see it unless there was a point in the plot.
Well, I *will* say this: If that change were to happen, I picked that particular guy on purpose. You only see him in that panning shot.
And the whole idea behind this was that I'm thinking PT. This scene makes me think of the Jedi council room scenes.
However I don't have a plot point for this idea.

If you do any work on the Leia/hologram scene, could you make sure she uses the same take as in the garage as in Ben's house? The one in Ben's place sounds more desperate at the end. I don't think she had time to record 2 different messages.

I agree.

I wouldn't touch the Leia hologram. I always thought that the lip synch problem was intentional on the part of Artoo.

Hmmm...I've never thought that. I always thought it was because of 77's technology.
However, if you were to go with that line of thinking, lets make Leia's voice sound all garbled up, ya know? Put some distortion on it...or something.

OK, I hope it doesn't sound like I'm praising everything you do adywan, but SWEET!!!
I do see the advantage to the smaller revised explosion...we can't have the rebels blowing up too soon now can we?
Yes, I'll admit the actual explosion is a little funky, but I'd rather have that new revised shot than what we have now!
LOVE the engines shutting down!

Rebel11_38, I like your reasoning behind the tractor beam, but I also see where adywan is coming from...hard to decide...

Rebel11_38,
Yeah, I've thought about a tractor beam as well...
You certainly wouldn't want to copy star trek, but you might not be able to get away from that...
Everyone kind of knows what it's "suppose" to look like. It has a faint glow that might flicker on and off...at least that's how I picture it.
You would also want the sound effect to go along with the special effect, ya know? They would need to "meld".
I do like the idea, though!

Yes! Very nice explosion (and camera shake too right?)! Man, that explosion helps that shot so much! I like how it comes close to filling the frame, but, of course, then cuts to the droids.

As far as the "rough" new audio mix: This is harder for me to tell because of my little speakers on my laptop. BUT I did notice a few things. The sound effects seem to be a little more quiet, which, in this case, is good!

I'm tweaking a few of the aliens in the cantina, adding mouth movements, blinks etc, and fixing the severed arm shot too. no more blood and the correct hand.

This is great! lol, I was going to suggest this very thing!

cbaka,
Nice clip!
The camera shake certainly helps!
Not sure about the lightning impact effect, but it's still cool just the same!

Yeah, if there was a way to remove the smoke and/or make it disappear quickly...
I'm thinking about when the queens ship gets hit in TPM...Because of the speed the ship is going, the explosion kind of quickly falls behind...If I'm remembering correctly...

Again on the camera shake:
Maybe this is too much, but what if the camera began to rumble just a bit as the star destroyer (opening shot) moves above the screen?

Man, sweet pics, adywan! Lovin' Tatoonie right now!
OK, I've been going through ANH and finding things here and there.
I'm not going to prepose any ideas that have already been in other edits (because I like most of them, and I think you're already implementing them)
These are just some things that stuck out to me...or things I'd like to see.
Don't feel as though you have to reply to every idea here.
Hopefully I won't bother anyone here with all of these pics.
I work better with pictures!
Here we go:

I know some won't agree, but I'm throwin' them out there just the same!
I've got more coming people! So get ready! Isn't it possible to do thumbnails instead? Anyone know how?

Commander Courage
Thank for pointing that out.
When I read it, I thought he meant he was simply remixing what was already there in the mix.

So, adywan...just to wet our appetite...wanna throw out an idea you've had for a specific scene? -...besides the cantina
Again, I know you're not really focused on that right now...any little idea you've had will do!

I'm stripping the soundtrack down to just the dialogue track, equalising the dialogue and then building it back up to a better 5.1 mix with new effects to give a better surround experience. I have managed to get hold of a 7 disk Hollywood Foley library and i'm in the process of making up a star wars effects library. I really don't like the mix on the DVDs. Too much emphasis on sound effects, music cues you can hardly hear or have disappeared completely, and an overpowering subwoofer (bloody bad idea to let ben burtt do the final mix).

Whoops! How did I miss this post?! Thanks for clarifing adywan! I think the way you're going about it is probably the best way to do it. Wow! I simply can't wait!

I know you're focusing more on the visuals right now, but I'm wondering (so I can be on the look out): are you thinking about adding in some PT sound fx to ANH?
I can't think of anything off hand...but maybe replace a few of the poor sound fx in ANH (maybe buttons and knobs-...maybe the lightsabers! )...

I think one thing that really dates this films is the sound track...particularly the foley fx. They used so much of the on-set voices and not enough ADR...and the ADR has an odd EQ or something...like they recorded it in a tin can or something...

Just one more thing to think about!

I'm going to be adding the remnants of the fleet being caught up in the energy wave and you'll see them being destroyed. I think it will give the destruction of the Empire more impact and will take this sequence away from the "ANH rehashed" feeling I've always had about ROTJ's ending. Another thing i always wanted to see that was in the script, and will be in my version, was when the rebels realise the shield is still up and some ships couldn't turn in time impacting into the shield.

adywan:
I LOVE both of these ideas! Man, you're coming up with some great stuff for these edits! Have you had any ideas for ESB?

Wait! Wait! Greatest idea for ROTJ: Have Jar Jar manning the falcons guns during the battle!

I suspect that Starkiller Ranch will actually begin with SOTDS. Unless there's another release scheduled for the next couple months that I'm not aware of!
SOTDS goes without saying!
As for ROTJ, I might wait for the release of the "ROTJ- .83" edition. I think he has some interesting ideas as well.

I had actually just found that thread the other day and forgotten about it completely! Yeah, I would probably wait then too.

Hmm maybe the other two Death Star could be a threat to Naboo, Mustafar, Uptopia, or even Tatooine.

I guess that's what I was "afraid" of.
Why would the death star be blowing any of these planets (especially Tatoonie) to bits?
If any planet I could could see this happening with it's Naboo.
Now, I'm not saying we couldn't fit a new plot element into this edit to make this idea work...
...because I DO like this idea of more than one death star....but, again, why would we have death stars attacking these specific planets?

Well, Darth Richard, I'm not sure how that would work....hmmm....
I guess my question would be:
Where are these other death stars positioned?
Would they be aiming at other plantets? If so, which ones? and why?
Interesting idea...

*I'm* gonna go out on a limb and ask: Why doesn't the Starkiller Ranch saga edit start with ROTJ?
Why start with the last episode? Well, everyone (OK, at least me!) has been wanting to see a good ROTJ edit.
Plus it seems that most of the ideas in this thread are for ROTJ. So why not?
