It's easier to add shots like this to the OT than take away shots like this in the prequels?

Actually, I'm not quite conviced of this. This is a really quick and kind of crude way to do it but: depending on the shot you chose you could simply select and freeze frame a background, then roto in a ship flying past.

And again, sometimes I think they are a very appropriate type of shot to use.

I know what you're saying SSWR, but I love flybys.

One of my favorites is from ROTS right after Obi's line: "Another happy landing!" A really nice flyby shot! :D

And it doesn't stand out like the ones ILM did in the SEs.  I think its short and subtle.

Again to be clear, Adywans new shot is wonderful. And my guess is it will look great with the rest of the movie.

Now, if Ady redid EVERY shot like this, I'd have a problem...

Yeah, I probably wouldn't like that either...but it is his baby!  ;)

Let's break up all the fly by shots in the PT Revisited then. ;)

Yes! Or at least most of them! ;)

Ric Olie said:

But do you have any idea how hard they are to pull off convincingly?  I'm not talking about creating the shot - I'm talking about the actual flying.  Forget space camera placement and all that jazz, 'cause the real skill is in piloting that ship as close as you can to the camera without taking out either the camera itself or the crew.

Trust me on this, when you've done one successful flyby, you'll want to do 'em over and over again.

Ric, I would love to see you with a video blog of some kind!  ;)

I will say that as much as I am impressed with and love the new shot...there is a part of me that likes the simple hard cuts of the original.

The PT is full of flyby shots just like this. In fact, I believe there are no flyby shots that are made up of two different shots (one shot with a ship coming up towards the camera and the next shot with the ship moving away).

I'm not saying I don't like the new type of shot. I'm not saying the shot can't be effective. In fact, there are some I really like in the PT...it's just something I noticed and I thought it was over used in the PT, IMHO.

Again, I love what Ady did with the shot. Not trying to start anything.  :D

The term we learned in film school is "crossing the axis," which is when the audience's eyes are moving in one direction, when suddenly they are forced to move in another. It's something that we should try to avoid, which is why sometimes a director will opt to flip a shot even if it means inconsistencies. An error like a strap on the wrong side of a character is a minor nuisance compared to how badly crossing the axis takes the viewer out of the experience.

What he said!  :P   Yeah, I should probably read up more on my film terminology!  :D

Thanks for the feedback on the video guys! Even though it would still need more sound work, I love that the music is now very clear and not so muddy like it originally was.   :P

I've never actually noticed any of the flipped shots before. But if they are flipped, they should be un-flipped.

I'm actually with DE on this. You can't just go un-flipping shots. *Usually* they are done for the sake of screen direction. If a character starts to look towards screen right you can't then have a shot of him looking at screen left. (unless its done with some sort of story telling purpose...but I can't think of any off the top of my head)  my two cents :D

Btw SWWR any news or updates from ROTJ fan-o-matic? Or its finished?

Um...yeah...I think I'll have one more part finished pretty soon. But I'm not sure if I'll get around to completing the whole movie. The most radical ideas I wanted to try out I already have to some degree. And the ending...yeah...there are so many ideas to try...it's quite a big job thats a bit overwhelming. So I will probably only tackle a couple of key scenes. :D

And SSWR- I loved what you did with the pacing of the Palps/Ani conversation. The duel shots were trimmed perfectly, but the last sequence all seemed too rushed.  It needs to feel a bit more natural, but overall, this was a good step in the right direction.

 Thanks Ghost!

A couple of people have now said the same thing about the end scene. But no one has said spefically said how to lengthen it. Any ideas?

hey SSWR, loved the video! your prospective dialogue for windu is great, especially his remarks when getting on the transport! i'd be interested in seeing some dubs on anakin and palps perhaps if you think the dialogue could be improved, as you seem to get it spot on pretty much all the time.

Thanks ben! I also think Anakin should be redubbed...I loved what Trooperman did in SOTDS! But i'm not as interested in attempting that as I was Windu. No one had tried that before as far as I know.

ben_danger said:

only things i'd change would be anakin waiting in the council chamber and the interchange there, id be interested to see that dialogue placed upon anakins fall scene?

I don't disagree that the dialouge would work well there too. However in my particular edit it wouldn't work. Why? Well, I think Palps "mind talking" to Anakin is kind of what puts Anakin over the edge. It's what makes him show up and slice up Windu. If I cut that scene then why does Anakin go find Windu and Palps to begin with?

ben_danger said:

bingos idea would be a nice addition,

Agreed! Although I think that line from Palps would require a close up and I don't know how you would make him say that...hmm

ps- ill get some comparison stills for the tilt shift experiment up when i have a spare moment.

Sweet!  :D  Thanks again for the kind words!

Thanks for the feedback, mybenja0618 and theslime!

This is interesting. Of course we would have to find someone to supply Sam Jackson's voice.

I saw on your youtube post that you wanted things to seem like Anakin and Vader were two different people. Is there any idea there you are toying with?

Yes, we would definantly need some else to do his voice...although I don't think we need to find someone who sounds like sam jackson...my 2 cents...

Yeah, the whole Anakin and Vader are two different people ideas comes from simply watching the saga in order. I believe the surprise (I am your father) should still be in ESB. And I do have a couple of ideas on how to do this...hopefully I'll get around to posting them.

Wow, that was amazing, SSWR. It's a different movie altogether. It's still a bit of a mystery to me why Anakin chooses the dark side, even in this edit. However, in this case it's good mysterious! The removal of some of the lines makes it sound like he's more afraid than insecure, somehow. The context even changes the feel of his lines after the turn (kinda like how Magnoliafan made Natalie Portman a better actress by changing the Trade Federation's motivations to slavery. Suddenly "My people are dying" made sense.). He's been driven into this situation, but he should have known better. He knows that now, but he still doesn't know entirely which side to be on. Very cool indeed.

Well, the idea is that it's the power of the dark side that ends up hooking Anakin. Yes, I believe that Anakin is concerned for Padmes life and he's not very trusting of the Jedi (specifically Windu in my edit) but once Palps starts talking about the POWER of the dark side...well...that's the hook...at least I think it should be. Kind of like the ring in Lord of the Rings. It's hard to pass up...just like Luke has a hard time passing it up in ROTJ.

Thanks again! :D

Post it elsewhere SSWR. I just can't tell the difference. But can you go into a bit more detail on what you're doing and what we should be looking for? I get that you want to make it look like a minature. I don't know.. Just not sure what I need to look for.

Post what elsewhere? I'm confused.   ???

And thanks for the fixed link, JasonN! :D
