The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **
Time

Snoke could be someone really ancient who woke up in the wake of the Emperor’s death, or Kylo discovered as he embraced the dark side. If there are old Jedi sites in forgotten corners of the Galaxy, there are Sith ones too.

If Kylo’s skills are incomplete, that could still be an ancient Sith saber and not his first attempt at building one.

When I saw TFA, I think saw something I really hope I didn’t see. One of the trailers before TFA was for Batman vs. Superman. I think I saw Batman with a gun. I really, really, hope I am wrong about this.

You sure it wasn’t the gizmo he uses to fire grappling hooks? That changes design a lot from incarnation to incarnation? I think Batman has had a gun capable of firing a sliver of Kryptonite into Superman, just in case if he ever went rogue.
The Batmobile did have machine guns in the '89 film.

One thing I didn’t realize was being shown in Rey’s vision was Kylo and his men killing Jedi. Those were probably all the ones Luke had trained since ROTJ, and they’ve been wiped out. Luke putting his hand on Artoo was probably after he discovers this. He doesn’t just feel the pain of failing with Ren, he’s lost an entire generation of new Jedi. That’s a terrible burden to bear.

George worked much the same way. He didn’t have the sister thing worked out yet when Yoda spoke of another in Empire. Did Irvin Kershner have to know if Vader really was Luke’s father or not to make that scene work?

I think someone at Lucasfilm will be guiding things. People are not just going to make up whatever they want.

There really wasn’t time to mourn Han, they still had to finish the task at hand and get the hell out of there. In the original film, there was but a moment for Luke to mourn over Ben’s death and then the TIE fighters attack.

There was more time than that here. And it still explains zero about wtf did not happen between Leia and Chewie and DID happen between Leia and “Oh look some girl I’ve never met! She looks prime to share my grief over the horrifically sad death of my best friend and lover of many decades with!! not like any other old friends who I wouldn’t know were around BECAUSE I TOTALLY IGNORED THEM AS THEY BOTH APPROACHED AND WALKED PAST”

“But YOU… random stranger… HUG TIME!!”

I don’t know. I doubt ignoring Chewie was intentional. Maybe Leia knows something about Rey she’s not telling? Perhaps it’s just two Force sensitive people who are feeling each others grief in a way others can’t?

“If you’re watching this, then chances are, I’m probably dead. Chewie, don’t let that crazy kid crash the Falcon too bad.”

In all seriousness, I’m not sure how I’d feel about that. It’s tidy, but Han doesn’t strike me as the kind of guy to leave a sappy note behind. He was always one to put all his cards on the table. It would work as a narrative device if done right, but at the same time would (at least to me) feel genuinely OOC.

I wasn’t thinking along the lines of Han giving a “In case I’m dead” message, but something else entirely. It could be a happy moment of him with Leia, Han, and Ben. It could be him reaching out to Ben after the incident. Who knows. Spit-balling here mostly, but I think it could work. They say becoming a father is life changing, and during that 30 year gap, he could had gone a little soft and taking a liking to record some good moments in the presence of his kid. Of course, he goes back to regular Han after he cut ties from Leia and Ben heartbreakingly so.

Of course, none of this is really needed. This is only an interesting idea to me IF Kennedy was really serious about what she said.

It has been done in another space franchise of course. 😉

Rey has grown up in a hostile environment. None of the locals seem very friendly, and there seems to be very few other humans around. She’s more friendly to a droid she’s just met. If some guy I just met grabbed my hand, I’d be a little hostile too.

And before things gets dragged into the muck, and further attempts at gender political discussion in this thread will be dealt with swiftly and without any further warning.

under normal circumstances, I would have linked to the politics thread and continued the discussion there, but like I said I feared that would violate the spoiler rules and wouldn’t want to reveal something about the movie someone wouldn’t want to know until they saw it.

Rules might be more relaxed when the movie has been out long enough for most people here to have seen it.

We’ve never had a recurring Stormtrooper before though. Nor a female one. And I missed most of the hype except the attention the cool armor got, and Phasma’s name being derived from the Phantasm movie.

Whether she becomes the next Boba Fett in terms of fan reaction remains to be seen. I am a little intrigued though.

I know it’s difficult to separate two films plot joined at the hip, but for the benefit of others trying to remain spoiler free, keep Episode VIII speculations and rumors in their own thread whenever possible.

http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/Episode-VIII-Discussion-SPOILER-THREAD/id/18125

I will comply with this, but I do not understand the reasoning behind this. Speculating on what will happen in EP VIII and IX, based solely on what one saw in EP VII does not seem like a spoiler for the future movies to me. Also if one wants to speculate on what in going to happen in future movies based on what happened in this one, one will forced to post in the spoiler thread for ep VIII and might risk seeing actual spoilers. I of course understand keeping EP VIII rumors out of this thread, but keeping out speculation based solely on this movie, I don’t get. That is like if this were an a spoiler thread for ESB, keeping out someone speculating that the other Yoda spoke off in the movie was Han. Let me put it this way, if I had said to you back 1977 after seeing Star Wars for the first time that I thought Vader was Luke’s father, and my thinking was based solely on what I had seen on the screen while watching ANH, would that really have spoiled for you the big reveal in ESB? IMHO, no. That said, will comply with the order.

It’s more of a guideline than a rule. 😃
