The original fairy tales are also a lot darker than the sanitized versions most people are familiar with today.

The change coincided with debates about what is the best way to educate and entertain children. It wasn’t always about sanitizing for its own sake, but rather not seeing the same need or value of dark moral lessons found in some old fairy tales. There was once a lively debate about the proper means of providing a moral education to children.

What the themes and choices of the ST tell us about our culture and our time is its own worthwhile topic.

I liked the Leia scene and I read it as intended: Leia instinctually acted to save her life with the latent powers we know her to have. Maybe the moment was too contrived or the execution a little funny, but it worked for me.

Wouldn’t Plo koon be able to do that when he got shot down or would the explosion of killed him?

Every situation is different. Leia avoided pretty much all harm except exposure to space.

I just rewatched that part and it looked like he died a pretty horrible death (burning, exploding and smashing into the building)

Yep, I just happened to watch that clip the other day.

One thing I have to applaud… this set. So good to have the production back at Elstree building major sets, utilising practical costumes and FX for these new SW flicks. This particular set has a real Flash Gordon emperor Ming vibe. Love it!

It would be nice if they could have built the whole set though, instead of relying so heavily on redscreen.

I want to upvote this 😉

It’s funny what little things can annoy or be loved, but the red walls bothered me. My brain says, “oh it’s a movie studio.”

I guess it’s nice to know Snoke’s favorite color at least 😉

I’m really just spitballing here, but I think maybe the problem people have with Luke’s actions in TLJ is that there has been this Superman-like mistique set up around him by our culture. People assumed (or inferred), because Return of the Jedi ended on a high note for him, that he essentially could or would become the ST’s Qui-Gon Jinn or Ben Kenobi.

It is because TLJ turned around and said “Nope. Actually, he’s had a severe crisis of faith. Whatever you wanted him to do, he’s having none of it.” And so it’s as if Superman is suddenly not for truth and justice (and the “American way”). He’s not what we expected. He’s Bizzaro-Luke.

Humanizing him in this way cuts people deep, I think, because of how we as a culture built him up as a sort of superhero in the 80’s. Whether or not someone read the EU novels.

You are combining what I see as two different ideas. There is the idea that Luke was set up as a legendary figure like Superman. And there is the idea that he was a good guy who would go on to continue to learn and grow.

I hate the idea that Luke is known far and wide for his various deeds. I like the idea that not many people knew what happened on the second Death Star, don’t know his parentage, and lots of people don’t believe in the Force. If anything, I think Luke would never really receive great recognition.

Seeing him fall is more like seeing your dad after 35 years and he’s kind of a drunk loser. He wasn’t one before and maybe you idolized him a bit, but c’mon.

I think most people experience a discovery that their parents are more human than they knew as children. That has nothing to do with a change in the parents.

Finding out that Luke isn’t a legend and still isn’t perfect is a great way to go about this. Making him a “bizarro Luke” is a different thing.

So for me, it’s far less about idolizing Luke than wanting to see him follow a path of growth and discovery, as I want for any protagonist I like.

What was the jingling part again?

All the coins that were put into BB-8 at the casino by a drunk gambler.

No I know I mean what was the funny part regarding the coins jingling. As opposed to the part where the alien puts the coins in, or the part where he shoots them at the security guards.

It’s kinda subtle, but in every scene with BB-8 in between when the alien slots the coins in and BB shoots them out, when he moves around you can hear jingling.

It’s like in ESB when Lando opens the door to reveal Vader and then Boba Fett walks in with a pocket of of jingling coins to break the tension. Classic Star Wars humor.

Wait I thought you liked Bea Bea Seven?

I like Boba Fett too!

The coins are dumb too. I’ll have to watch the scene again but I’d like to remove that bit if possible, which would also allow the removal of the dumb CGI alien that feeds the coins into him in the first place. I liked most of the humor in TLJ but that bit didn’t work for me.

With that said, I think I would have been fine with the walker scene if they never tore off the head, and just had a quick shot of him manipulating it via data port.

You’re wrong, Frink, because I liked the alien putting the coins in BB-8. I did though.

Is there anything about TLJ we agree on?!?!

Really! Maybe everything you didn’t like in the movie are the only things I like.

I do think they went a little too far with BB-8 but not really out of character from TFA. (Oh no, are we going to now talk about whether the droids have been perfectly in character from movie-to-movie?)

Can I call him Bea Bea Seven? 'Cause BB-8 would never act like this!

Can we call her Bea Bea Seven…

Luke 6:27-31: But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you.

caught a matinee showing on my day off today. 2D Imax. 4th time. Excellent movie.

I really can’t understand 90% of the criticisms in this thread. there are like 10% of them that i can understand, but the rest?

  • I can understand not liking parts of the Canto Bight sequence
  • I can understand wanting to know a bit more about snoke (curiosity and all that)
  • I can understand being annoyed by Phasma, and bits of Finn as well

not much else though.

C’mon everyone, once more…with feeling.

[126 pages later] “I don’t understand…”

I generally liked the Canto Bight sequence even though it felt like a pointless tangent. Some here have expressed a similar complaint about the Jabba sequence in ROTJ. Though I don’t share others’ disdain for Ewoks or the Jabba sequence, I accept that they are viewing it the way they say they are. Though I disagree, I can see the rationale for wanting Han dead in ESB, or wanting Wookies instead of Ewoks, or skipping Jabba’s palace. I think making Leia Luke’s sister was a less than inspired choice, but I think it worked. For some people, a slew of factors push them into the camp of not liking ROTJ very much. I think that’s crazy, of course, but I understand their reasons on particular points

I posted a quote a couple pages back from a youtuber that people are more willing to accept elements of a movie they disagree with if they feel an emotional connection to what’s happening. And I think that is a part of what’s missing for many people. Some people will really just hate certain choices or themes no matter what. Like the cave on Dagobah, we will have an experience based on what we take in with us.

Let’s take on example from that article. Hopefully nobody thinks I’m cherry-picking. Student debt and its forgiveness is a topic that interests me.

“Erase student debt: $1.4 trillion”

If a person borrowed to attend a state school they probably have debt ranging from $5k-30k (based on my quick research). Average college debt in the US is about $29k. Obviously people who didn’t go to college wouldn’t benefit. So already there is a disparity that, generally, probably advantages people from families with higher incomes. People who are $200k in debt certainly win out over the person with $10k in debt. But $10k debt is a very manageable amount and I don’t know what benefit to society there is by forgiving such a small amount. And if we only forgive, say, the first $30k you’re leaving a lot of people struggling who may not be from well-to-do families but foolishly got themselves into tremendous debt.

When people keep racking up debt in the future, do we forgive it again? Do we add the $600b more (proposed in the article) to cover costs for state schools? If students keep racking up debts at private schools in the future, then too bad?

The proposal to build 15 space stations is probably the best one. We should have done that one.
