I’m no engineer, but somebody made a huge mistake.

At least six people were injured Thursday afternoon when a pedestrian bridge at Florida International University collapsed onto eight lanes of road traffic and police believe multiple people have died.

The bridge was installed just last week. During the ceremony, FIU President Mark Rosenberg said, “FIU is about building bridges and student safety. This project accomplishes our mission beautifully.”

It’s easier to get the low-bid contracts when you cut corners.

I predict huge settlements.

I’ve never understood why Rand is seen as so influential and a lightning rod. Then again I’ve never read her books.

Ever hear of Alan Greenspan or Paul Ryan? She’s basically an extreme, unrepentant form of Gordon Gecko. And her sci-fi is meh at best.

The first two seem like reasonable enough people. All I know about Gordon is that he is greedy and/or a lizard. Don’t recall whether I knew Rand wrote sci-fi. The Canadian is entirely new to me.

Does this go here or…?

Reminds me a bit of doubleofive’s post here which I can’t link directly because I can’t figure out how to do that anymore unless the post has been edited.

…from 2011. Can’t remember what I had for breakfast half the time but I remember that post.

That is a memorable post.

The Last Jedi: Official Review and Opinions Thread ** SPOILERS **
Time

Unlike all you QC people, I had to wait to get home from work to watch what all the hullabaloo is about. Can only imagine what defective products reach the market because of OT. I liked seeing the back-and-forth and Luke’sHamill’s reaction to the Jedi library scene. It matched my own so it’s true! But unless there is a deleted scene where Rian hits Hamill with his chair I don’t have any notion what Val is on about.

Contained in Warb’s paranthetical is the idea that a gun safety lesson in a school can be legitimate but this guy shouldn’t be teaching it based on actions evincing recklessness. mfm takes the view that no such class is ever acceptable and/or any accident is proof of absurdity and incompetence.

I’m not sure whether a gun safety class is acceptable or not, but it is certainly not legitimate for a teacher to decide to do this on his own without the school’s knowledge or permission.

Given the school’s reaction, I’d be surprised if this was done without the school’s knowledge or permission. You’re right there’s a lot we don’t know here.

Evil flight attendant murders dog. Here’s to hoping the person responsible does the world a favor and dies soon.

I would love to know all of the facts. I am pretty dogs aren’t supposed to be in the passenger area of an airplane at all. It certainly makes no sense that if dog were allowed in the passenger area, it would have to be kept in the overhead compartment. I think normally pets travel in cages in the cargo hold and not in the passenger area. Just what killed the dog? Being put in the overhead compartment, while maybe a little scary and uncomfortable, would not seem to me to be fatal. Weirdness.

Baggage tends to move around. Being crushed or suffocating are both possibilities.

Agreed.

Some things are obviously unjustifiable. Sticking your dog in a car trunk for a 3 hour ride is also unacceptable.

I wasn’t trying to justify anything. I just want know exactly how the dog came to be in the overhead compartment.

Antigravity boots.

I imagine the owner complied with stewardess instructions.

Story couple weeks ago about woman who flushed her emotional support hamster when it was a suggested option in order to board a flight.

I guess airports are a good example of the Milgram experiment or learned helplessness. Or these owners are nuts, especially the hamster owner.
