Designing a board game
Time

Sounds fun. I made a Star Wars board game, among others, when I was a kid. Every so often I think about a game I would like to make.

I'm finding maps of specific resources: coal, oil. You can find pretty good maps on the state level, using government websites like the USGS as a portal. The USGS website is such a mess, but I suspect there are useful maps lurking in it. There is also the eia.

Sounds like a pretty big game :D

Anti-piracy/Downloading PSAs
Time

Consultor said:

Hi, guys. I need some very cool or very creepie anti-piracy PSAs. Something that will make people go to the theatres. Can anyone help me?

I think making good movies will make people go to the theaters.

Going to a theater is about the experience it offers.

Evidence suggests that the vast majority of those who pirate would not otherwise go to the theater.

How do we make people who may not be overly excited about a movie go watch it for £5/$10? If they are excited, they probably want to see it in it's full glory. As we've noticed, movies continue to do very very well.

Guilting people into paying money for a movie they aren't that excited about can't be that effective, either in stopping piracy or increasing theatre attendance (again, different things).

I think it would be more effective to do something pro-theater than straight up anti-piracy. Highlight the movie-going experience, contrast it with sitting in front of the computer, watching a version of the movie with Chinese subtitles. Basically make people want to go to the theater - not because they're bad people who must give their money to see a second-rate movie but because the theater is a fun and worthwhile experience.

Do you think the average citizen of the Star Wars galaxy would even be aware of the Force?

Could be a figure of speech.

Maybe. Then again, maybe not. Interstellar travel between Alderaan and "remote" locations like Tatooine and Dantooine seems to go pretty quickly in Star Wars. Also, doesn't the ending of Empire depict the Rebel fleet outside the galaxy? From the ESB screenplay:

Together they stand at the large window of the medical center looking out on the Rebel Star Cruiser and a dense, luminous galaxy swirling in space. Luke puts his arm around Leia. The droids stand next to them, and Threepio moves closer to Artoo putting his arm on him. The group watches as the Millennium Falcon moves into view, makes a turn, and zooms away into space.

Specifically, the Falcon moves toward the galaxy that Luke and Leia are looking at, and since the dialogue indicates that Lando and Chewie were headed toward Tatooine, it's reasonable to infer that that galaxy is the very galaxy in which the storyline of Star Wars unfolds.

Also, Mon Mothma says in Return, "With the Imperial Fleet spread throughout the galaxy in a vain effort to engage us..." which, again, suggests that hyperdrive travel is capable of crossing vast portions of the galaxy (and even leaving the galaxy, according to the ESB ending) in a very short amount of time.

I like to think a lot of it was for the purpose of moving the story. It's fairly contradictory to call Tatooine remote, requiring quite an expense to travel, and then only taking 5 minutes to get to Alderaan. And the galaxy is a nice visual. As for the Imperial Fleet, that it is spread across at least a large portion of the galaxy makes sense, but it also implies significant travel times - otherwise we could probably have the entire fleet here in under half an hour. I like to think it's like parsecs and more about artistic license in telling a story than intentional decisions about physics.

From what I understand the EU takes pains to explain what parsecs means and rationalizes travel times with discussion about hyperspace routes. I think it's okay to realize some stuff in Star Wars wasn't that intentional.

I haven't mentioned this - I try not to get too personal...but I went to my mother's recently and all of my Star Wars were taken from their proper resting places on the various shelves and put into boxes. Fortunately, my brother did the boxing. A mother can't be trusted on such matters. She's threatened to put them in storage. I tell her to hold off, that I'll take them with me one day when I get things settled. She's suggested I sell them. Hah! I've not been an active collector for a long time, but I love the Star Wars nonetheless. And one day, I will have a son. And he can look at them.

In other news, she is plotting to tear down a wall. I like that wall.

I'm on a train. It's nice to meet you.

True, but remember that hyperspace-travel is apparently fast enough to permit travel clear across the galaxy. Remember these lines?

Han: "Kid, I've been from one end of this galaxy to the other."

Imperial Officer (in ESB): "If they went to lightspeed, they could be on the other side of the galaxy by now."

Could be a figure of speech.

I wish Star Wars (EU) mythology didn't try to tell us the full extent of the galaxy, give us detailed anthropology on various cultures, and stereotype entire species based on one character shown in the movies -  that's been a pet peeve for me.

I would much prefer mystery, slowly revealing bits and pieces of the universe, making it feel as big as it should be, as the story unfolds. Still bothers me that the trip from Tatooine to Alderaan was like 2 minutes. I can't believe it was meant to be that way.

I think it would make sense for belief in the Force to be pretty widespread, the way belief in a deity is widespread on our planet - even if plenty of people don't believe in it or don't act like they do. But I think Jedis would be very rare indeed. I think the connection with the Force made them guardians of peace and justice, rather than having great numbers. It's not like anyone was truly stunned at the notion of the Force. It was the idea that it was real and that there were people who could tap into it that people scoffed at.

The thread where we make enemies out of friends, aka the abortion debate thread
Time

TV's Frink said:

I agree with none.

The bill was perceived by Democrats as political maneuver to coax liberal lawmakers into supporting the bill or face the prospect of an onslaught of campaign advertisements this fall highlighting a lawmaker's vote to support sex-selection abortions.

To an extent, sure. But why in the world would anyone support sex-selection abortions?

I've read a complaint that such abortions are (supposedly) rare and so not worth doing anything about. I've read a complaint that this will hurt Republicans with asians because it is supposedly more common among asians than other ethnicities. I've read complaints now insinuating this is about financial benefit for the bill's sponsor or just a political ploy. I'm surprised I haven't read the usual/pathetic 'but we have so many important things to be focused on!' argument. I've not found many criticisms based on the actual substance of the bill.

The notable exception is Obama who claims the bill would essentially force doctors to interrogate women about their motivation for seeking an abortion and that the government would be overstepping its bounds by imposing such a rule. My educated guess is that the bill does not impose such a requirement nor would a court construe it that way, but those who desire continued support of the pro-choice movement will read it into the bill as a palatable reason for opposing it.

Are There Any Visually Striking Moments in the PT?

I am personally particular about the moving battle between Darth Maul, Quigon, and Obi-Wan in TPM although I am sad it isn't at least somewhat longer and more intricate.

More intricate? I must respectfully disagree. It needed to be simpler, more like the OT duels. The flashy maneuvers in the second half of the duel, after Qui-Gon kicks the bucket, tarnishes the whole thing IMHO.

Intricate as cricket perhaps?

I most agreed with CP3S on rainy Kamino scene. I get that same sensation about rain. Could have been much better, but I loved the rain.

Hard to think of much that stands out in the PT like so much in the OT does, let alone a single shot like

I don't get the significance of the cellphone. And that she put it into her soaking pants pocket?? Better be waterproof since cellphones are notoriously sensitive to water. I doubt the voice recorder would have been of much use in a wet pocket. And it isn't said whether or not it recorded anything. Was a weird detail to add.

Obviously, if one finds oneself in such a situation, they should haunt the aggressor and do a "I know what you did last summer" routine.

How would YOU re-do the prequels?
Time

What aspect makes you must unsure?

The whole cloning idea is creepy to me. I really used to think Clone Wars was a title, the name of a place or something. I've begrudgingly accepted that "clone" means clone even for my own stories, but that's where I come from generally.

To me cloned Jedi seem to raise the creepy factor. The depiction of insanity could be difficult without making things just too dark. I'm trying to imagine a cloned (perhaps insane) Luke in the OT, how that would fit with the tone.

Is your concern more story-based about staying away from dark force users? I'd say if that's a direction you don't want to go, probably best not to go there, especially half-heartedly.
