Info: Terminator 2 - in search of the theatrical sound mix...

That sounds like Dialog Normalization at work.

Because of it, the whole Dolby track will be turned down in the receiver by a certain amount (most likely 4 dB), and it makes it seem less powerful than it actually is.  The speech itself will be perfectly audible in both cases, so we don't notice during times when not much is going on, but since the peaks in the action scenes are noticeably lower, this will deceive the listener into thinking that it is less good.  Also, due to the Fletcher-Munson effect, our ears suck at hearing bass at low volumes, so we think one version is mixed with less bass, while in reality the actual amount may well be the same.

Unfortunately, DialNorm cannot be defeated by the end user, so these sorts of volume discrepancies during playback are unavoidable.  Combine that with our natural tendency to believe that louder is better, and we can convince ourselves of all kinds of things.  If you have a receiver that specifies how much DialNorm offset is in the track (I have a new Marantz that does this), that can help with making a more accurate comparison.  This can at least help make it possible to distinguish how much of what you're hearing is due to the mix itself and how much is just because of the playback level being turned down.

Does a free and small software read the DialNorm Value?

Is there any noob way and easy software to compare the different channels? I don't even find something that could decode the dts track to show it like a wavestream.

If you don't have the dts track yet, and want it to analyse, give me a pm, at least it is easy to demux the DVD into dts file.

Doh, I have the full screen DVD converted to 24fps if you want

hanks, but I already have a safety PAL Copy of the Full Screen Version, but I try to get it for my DVD Collection on the Shelf as an original DVD.

I checked out the Full Bit Rate DTS Track from the japanese DVD. And it really sounds more powerfull. I cannot check if it is indeed a full Bit Rate Version, or just "upscaled", but it sounds better and more powerfull than the normal Dolby Track on that disc...

Highlander II - The ZEIST Collection (Released)
Time

There seem to be two different German DVDs (well, three, if I count the Renegade Version in a Highlander 4 Movie Box, that only has german subtitles, and was as add on to the Highlight DVD Version in that box), if I read the ofdb.de Information correct.

One with German 5.1 and 2.0 Audio and Running Times: 93:35 Min. (88:41 Min. w/o Endcredits) from Arcade Video/ Highlight

The other with German 5.1 Audio and Running Times: 95:56 Min. (91:04 Min. w/o Endcredits) from Concorde

Maybe the Concorde release is the same Version as the Italian release. (The italian VHS is stated to have a running Time of 96:10 Min. With studio logos and such it could fit to the Concorde DVD release...

Running times and Audio Format infos taken from ofdb.de.

So.. a japanese Terminator 2 DVD just arrived. Not the one with the Full Bitrate DTS track, that shall arrive someday in October.

well.. I have to admit: I got that old japanese THX certified DVD release "PIBF-1001" in CD jevel Case... and I wonder if it differs in Color from the US Live DVD. But: The DVD is still sealed! Damn!

I have PIBF-1001 if you need me to check anything out

Do you know if the colors are the same as with newer releases, or if they used an older master with different colors?

Hi

Maybe someone has the Italian highlander 2 dvd 94 minutes?

Too bad it has only italian audio.

It seems to be the only version known to be the european non english theatrical Version. The german theatrical release and DVD seems to be based on that, but is censored serveral minutes.

The french DVD from TF 1 is stated to have a running time about same time as the UK disc, and is stated to be in Full screen, as far as I can read the miniature picture on amazon.

The Widescreen release seem to be the Renegade Version.

Edit: Found an image of the backside of the french US theatrical DVD, and it states widescreen. Could not read the other picture well enough.

Uhm.. the seller states this in the headline "F/S" (I read it as "Full Screen". But interpretating the backside I would assume it is normal WideScreen. Also compared with the japanese Wide and Full Screen LD release Backsides and OBIs I cannot find any "Full Screen" clue on the coverimages at ebay.

Anyone know anything? it is a bit expensive to blind-dip it...

EDIT: ...nevermind the blind-dip part. I just realised it was sold while searching the web for informations on that.

EDIT 2: Comparing with backsides from other japanese Temrinator 2 releases it seems to be a widescreen Version. The Writing under the 16:9 Logo (was an indicator, but without any more information it also can be used as an "here is the box for the aspect ratio information) is the same as on the backside of another release explicitly stated as 16:9 widescreen...

 teatrical cut

There is a similar issue,but pal 131min

...

Russia seems to be the only (PAL) Region that got the Movie on Full Screen DVD.

To bad I can't find the russian DVD on eBay. Would be something nice to put into my DVD shelf.

I know where to get it. There are several.

You have an eBay link? Or a reliable store link? I really would liket to get it as retail disc.

Maybe I have the Japanese PIBF-92119 DVD with the Full Rate DTS Track here next Month.

Wich tools would be best to compare the Track with other releases, regarding the sound mix?

Also I can try to bring some scenes to youtube for others to check...

Edit:

btw, the first (known to me) french DVD was from 1998. Stated to contain a 2.0 and a 5.1 Track in english.

What Mix is to be expected here?

Since the LD tracks are analog, a simple analog capture probably will be sufficient. However to track it and sync it, the video, even in low res, will be needed.

Curious to hear that mix/fix which is now lost in time.

...

...

Edit: Anyone an easy to follow hint how to resync Audio and Video? I think the Audio is about a half a second behind the video in the final file. :(

Never mind. It was easy with VCL as a help to check how many miliseconds the audio was off, and MKVmerge to remerge the MKV.

At the Moment I am trying to rip the Thorn EMI/HBO LD to my PC.

The Sound of the Disc is not the best. could be my player, could be the age of the Disc and some scratches. But at the Moment It seems as if I get two Video Files (one for each side)... I will compress the video, but I do not know how well the complete files will be. But If I am finished I will check how to make them accessible to check it out.

Maybe I can upload a short sample to youtube upcoming week.
