I honestly don’t see why so many people don’t like the BFII footage used in these clips. Yeah, the rest of the game scene looks gamey but the troopers look awesome, imo.
Here are my thoughts on the small portion of the live stream that I had the chance to watch. (Passana chase to Rey landing on Exogol)
The pacing in general is a big improvement especially with how the scenes are cut and rearranged. I’m also digging a lot of the new creative ideas that you’ve come up with.
These are my critiques from memory but I’ll have to get my hands on a Google doc to give a more thorough analysis.
-Passana underground cave
The cut from Rey igniting the saber to the group walking around is too jarring, I prefer how Hal intercut the Knights of Ren shot as a buffer. I also missed the flash light gag, thought it was hilarious, but to each their own!
Recutting the Serpent’s introduction to give a more monster movie/Jurassic Park feel is a great way to build up tension. I think 3PO’s talk about the “law enacted in old Republic” should be moved up to when the crew see the snake, showing that 3PO is unaware of the danger.
"Breathe, just breathe "
- Nice nod to TLJ. I think it needs to be a little more subtle but it could just be the audio quality of the stream.
Rey/Tie fighter/ Chewbacca shuttle
- Brilliant idea, I think you should use Dominic cobb’s version that makes the scene longer using trailer footage. I think the scene should focus more on Kylo Ren’s approach, building more tension and not intercutting to the crew during the standoff.
"a prisoner?"
- The scene where Hux and Pryde talk of there being a prisoner on the transport is a dead giveaway of Chewie being alive. I think you should cut all indication of him being alive until it’s finally revealed on Kigimmi. I’d also cut the scene where Hux introduces Pryde to “the beast that flew with Han Solo”. The first time that we see him after his “death” should be when the crew finally meet him in his prison cell. That way you create anticipation for his rescue😉
Drama on the Death star
- Leia voice reaching out to Rey after sensing what she did to her son sounded kinda casual, maybe she could say “Rey, no !” instead. I wonder if the shot of Leia dropping her com-link would be more suitable for this scene? It would mirror the scene in TFA where she sensed the death of Han Solo.
the Princess of Alderaan has disrupted our plan
- Since in this version Han’s memory/spectre is what intervened and Leia just senses what’s happening from a far, it doesn’t really make sense to have Palpatine say that in this context.
Palpatine’s message/Kylo on Coruscant
- While Palpatine sending out his message after initiating the “final order” is not a bad idea, including Kylo Ren on Coruscant in the montage right after seeing him throw away the saber on the death star just doesn’t follow logically in this context. Maybe you could replace it with the shot of Kylo looking determined after having thrown away the saber. Otherwise you could place the message in the beginning of the film as the prime mover of the plot. The thing that ignites the race for the way finder’s and by extention, Exogol.
These are some of the nitpick I had based on the short time I had on the live Stream. Overall I’m very impressed with what you’ve done so far, looking forward to get my hands on a workprint!

I haven’t seen Hals edit of that so I’ll check it out. I really wasn’t a fan of the flashlight gag 😉

I did originally cut this and the reveal scene but I couldn’t get the transition to work well. I’m still going to try and do a workaround as I really don’t like that scene. I liked the chewie and hux scene, I originally removed that too but thought it suited that scene better.
Drama on the Death star

I did think that but I feel that if Leia didn’t reach out to Rey then her killing Kylo would have pushed her towards the darkside more instead of giving her a wakeup call from her fit of rage and healing him.
Palpatine’s message/Kylo on Coruscant
I’m still working on that scene. I wanna make it feel like Kylo is split and maybe have some way of troops being pulled back on Coruscant. I’m trying to get the vibe that Kylo is 50/50 at this point leaving the audience questioning his next move.
I feel the message being there is the way it ignites the galaxy to help. The message sent out by Leia at the battle of Crait didn’t really hit home to everyone but Palp sending this message at this point of the movie is what the galaxy needed to all pull together, IMO.
I’m still trying to upload a 480p version to my google drive but it keeps failing. I’m really starting to lose it with my internet provider. I don’t have enough phone data to upload such a large file. 😦

TFA:R was fun, too. Especially working to finish it in time for a pre-TLJ premiere viewing.
The gist: no one steps up to execute the common idea of moving SKB’s firing to the third act, so I reluctantly try. I succeed in part, but it doesn’t totally work, and I feel dissatisfied with it being something that really wants to work, but doesn’t really.
Then, in early 2017, NeverArGreat and Sir Ridley (in particular, there were others like Jackpumpkinhead) swoop in from nowhere and do a ton of FX work. With new doors open, we all have a process going with an eye on December 2017. We largely succeed, though put out a more polished version a month or two later.
I put out a V3 (and then a mostly technical issue-correcting but also Palptine-tweaking V4) with a few more changes that are broadly welcomed, deciding not to restrain myself like I had, given that 8 and 9 would receive Hal9000 edits after all. (I had naively hoped the ST wouldn’t need fan edits, so TFA was treated minimally invasively.)
It’s extremely impressive just how much talent is in this community, especially in this edit. As much as not having deleted scenes for TROS was a frustration I feel it’s pushed us all to think a little harder about solving this cluster of a trilogy.
I’m still determined to design the TFA scene were Kylos mask remains on until he meets Han and thanks to Poppas TLJ edit I’m going to revise it again and link it with TROS more. I loved the Palp radio teaser ending in that edit.
I haven’t got around to watching your new workprint for TROS yet but I can’t wait to see the new direction you’ve taken…

I think it’s Perfect! One thing that annoyed me is knowing how they escaped the TIEs.
I can’t use it in my edit as Kylo never crashes but I definately think it would fit your cut.

pw: faneditI moved Kylo over a bit, and I reversed the direction of the camera. This way, Kylo is moving out of frame and the focus is drawn towards the ship. I also adjusted the music timing to hit on the wipe.

I don’t think that shot would work. If it’s taken from another Star Wars movie, it would be too obvious if it was included in this one.

I’ve sometimes used the gray LUT, but everything is much warmer, maybe too much. Now that I think about it, it looks like a sepia filter. I haven’t masked the lightsabers nor Force lightning.
I was about to say about the sepia feel but that colouration seems to bring out so much more detail in the scenes. I think it you could mask out more colours I.e. R2, Saber and palp lightening it would make it pop really well.
Question being: Would the force ghosts be blue?

I understand the sentimentality of keeping the hairstyle her mum gave her before she left but come on! Any sign of maturity or progression would’ve been nice. I guess Kylo had his flowing locks so they didn’t want a hair clash lol

Nice find! That second video has some great shots. Not sure the first one is useable though. I looked everywhere for a shot of the back of Kylo’s head.
I honestly think it would work really well the the nightmare reality would be changing all the amazing fan edit scenes, mainly from Jonh and Poppasketti. 😥

If someone doesn’t like that blue tone, I think the only solution is to change Exegol into a dark, black/grey planet.

Poppa, Does Kylo need to be in the frame from the start? I find him distracting. What if he’s barely in frame at the start so the focus is on the ship and then he slightly comes into frame by the end? I just think that having him dominate the screen detracts from the small ship taking off which seems to be the point of this clip.
Hal, or someone else, what needs to be done with the squeaky wheel scene?
The prop mechanics on BB8 need to be removed without cropping the frame in any way.
D-0S Prop pole that pulls and pushed him along needs to do the same without cropping.

Really good job on the audio. I’m not sure it’s needed but what you did sounds great.
Much appreciated. When I looked through earlier it seemed like the dialogue was going to be hopelessly mixed with the blaster sounds. If I can’t get it myself I’ll ask for audio maybe.
Anyone already have any good metal clink sounds? Right now Poe’s flashlight makes no sound as he tosses and catches it since I’m trying to keep the full shot while removing the beginning of the conversation at the end.

I cut just before Poe raises his flashlight. It was just too corny for my taste.
