Pokemon: making the dub more like the original (Released)
Time
It's on at least one of the Japanese DVDs for the second movie ("Pokémon 2000: The Power of One" here in the US, "Gekijoban Pocket Monsters: Maboroshi no Pokémon X Lugia bakutan/Revelation Lugia" in Japan). I believe it's on both of the movie-only versions (e.g. the one in the mov.1-9 boxset), but not the one with the movie and its corresponding theatrical short on the same disc.

Both drf and I are going to make DVDISOs out of my laser rip - we've got different ideas about how to go about it, and I like his idea, but I just want to make a barebones version. So prolly you'll see mine first, and his a bit after.

My plan is to create a barebones version, cleaned up a bit, scaled up to a 5:3 Anamorphic Widescreen (as opposed to 5:3 letterbox of the original), with the 2.0 ac3 from the settop.

What drf will probably do is take the R1, strip out the alternate versions, and replace the video track with my rip - dunno how well he'd be able to pull it off, though.

I tend to go "by eye".

I suppose settops have fixed brightness and contrast levels?

drf seemed to like his videos dark, can't imagine why (he's prolly never seen them any other way - he was too young to catch any of the movies in the theater.). He actually thought the DVD of Aladdin was way too bright merely because it didn't look as dark and dull as his VHS.

I'm uploading untouched sample clips from his VHS and my LD.

EDIT: Here they are 263 MB contains comparable samples from both rips (2:21 each)

drf sent me a very short piece of an avi he was downloading... it looks like the beginning of "Aladdin and the King of Thieves" from a Japanese DVD. It's off-aspect (720x480), but it appears to be a 4:3 source. There's an interesting bumper at the beginning that says "Disney Video Premiere". I don't have enough video to look any further into it.

EDIT: Confirmed - it's a 4:3 source, NTSC native, and all the credits are in English. The audio is Japanese. I can use this video source, if no better ones turn up.

OGM - Ogg Media. It's a modified OGG format that can carry video streams. (I use it whenever I need more than one audio track on a video file. Both of those videos are dual-audio.)

The Japanese DVD of My Neighbor Totoro has the old dub, with "dubtitles", and the original Japanese audio, and is "gutterboxed" (I think it's anamorphic, can't remember).

And I've heard the same thing about Kiki. Stupid unobtanium. Didn't even make it to laser?

I assume that since Fox and the Hound has only a 4:3 release on dvd twice, there's no widescreen laserdisc. People at Ultimate Disney are not sure what the original camera ratio is. Someone would have compared a widescreen laserdisc if it existed. Remember, a lot of the movies in the 60's and 70's were open matte.

So what is the aspect ratio of Mary Poppins? Are there any screenshot comparisons. I don't remember seeing anything about it on ultimate disney. Would the widescreen BatB laserdisc really go for less than 10?

The AR of Mary Poppins is reported to be 1.66:1.

I *bought* the WS LD for BatB for less than $10 including shipping but I haven't gotten it yet.

So you're looking for a Song of the South dvd that is still in Pal? Because I thought someone here already got an untouched source (2 actually) and ran into trouble trying to convert it to NTSC.

If it's converted by speedup, then it's easy enough. If telecine...it's harder. Though I might be able to go through my contacts on IRC and find *someone* who can pull up a 24:25.

What about preserving the original dvd of the Jungle Book since the new one is cropped to widescreen? This also applies to Robin Hood and Aristocats but the earlier versions of those are much easier to find.

Also in my plans, though I'm not really going to bring that up here.

One last thing, the original english dubs for Studio Ghibli on My Neighbor Totoro, Laputa: Castle in the Sky and I think Kiki's Delivery Service?

I have OGMs of the first two; they're on DVD in Japan. There's also one for Porco Rosso, I believe, and I don't have that. Kiki's R2 has the Disney dub (don't ask).

Thought I'd dig this up, as Molly's Disney thread triggered my memory.

I've asked this before, but some time has passed now (hopefully more subs have been done or turned up) but are these Japanese only episodes available with fan subs?

Slowking's Day
The Legend of Dratini
Electric Soldier Porygon
The Ice Cave!
Shaking Island Battle! Dojoach VS Namazun!!
Ash and May! Heated Battles in Hoenn!!

Has anyone captured the video footage from Pokemon Channel? I actually picked up the game recently but left it with my sister and haven't checked it out yet.

I think subs exist for the first 4, not the last one, and the 5th one on that list never made it to air.

Haven't had any to test it as a LD player yet. As everything else, it works.

Right now, Mary Poppins - Lion King - Aladdin - Beauty and the Beast - can't remember if there's anything else they screwed with in the DVD era. Is there an OAR Fox and the Hound on laser? And if any of the lasers have the original RKO bumpers, for movies that had them, I might need to look into some of them. (The DVDs of Peter Pan and Alice have them.)

Came out on DVD 3 times, and apparently all 3 times it got screwed up. IIRC, 2 of them are T&S, and the latest is cropped on *all four sides*. Everyone seems to say the "Archive" version on laser is the way to go so I'll look into it.

BTW - it was... $4? plus shipping for the BatB laser. eBay, as much as I hate it, is going to be invaluable for this.
