Ah thanks :)
Ah thanks :)
I noticed that the ESB AC3 track is 640kbps, I thought that the LD AC3 track was only 384kbps how is this possible?
Goddammit, that's the second April fools joke I fell for today!
Does anyone have some *really* high quality versions of the John Alvin poster art from ANH/ESB/ROTJ, preferably without any logos and stuff.
EDIT: I'm talking about these in case anyone wonders:
I have reasonably high quality versions of these, but the colours aren't as good and they're missing the top part. Even though the top part is mostly sky it's where the titles belong otherwise I'd have to put them over the faces :(
EDIT: Does anyone perhaps know if/where I could buy these as posters?
Damn Ady, you're gonna have to buy a whole new workstation, that's gotta set you back over a thousand pounds at least!
I hope the HDD with the project aren't damaged?
Okay I just installed the 32bit version of VirtualDub it now it works! Thanks Moth3r :)
Also, does anyone know why my script doesn't seem to work?
Moth3r, I checked my AviSynth installation and it all seems to work fine, it returns its correct version. The required plugins are in the VirtulDubMod plugin folder so that can't be a problem.
Yes I've got an X drive :)
Digital removal of workmen :P
I kinda like the hologram idea but only if we see the imperial officer entirely and not just from the waist. As for the Jabba scene, would it be possible to use ROTJ footage?
I tried this a couple of days ago and it didn't work, I just tried it again and it still doesn't work. This is my script:
LoadPlugin("X:\My Files\AV Tools\dgmpgdec158\DGDecode.dll")
MPEG2Source("D:\TEMP\PROJECT\test.d2v")
The files are where they're supposed to be. It does open in VirtualDubMod now, so that's something, but I can never get it to work in VirtualDub. I'll use VirtualDubMod for now but does anyone know why it won't work in VirtualDub? I'd rather use that one because it's newer and has a 64bit version.
When I open the AVS script in VirtualDub 1.9.8 it gives me the error "AVI import filter error: (unknown) (80040154)". Anyone know what this means.
EDIT: Does anyone know some (really) good AviSynth plugins for degraining? I'm using mvtools2 with this script:
LoadPlugin("C:\Program Files (x86)\VirtualDubMOD\plugins\DGDecode.dll")
LoadPlugin("C:\Program Files (x86)\VirtualDubMOD\plugins\mvtools2.dll")
MPEG2Source("D:\TEMP\PROJECT\test.d2v")
source = AVISource("D:\TEMP\PROJECT\test.d2v")
backward_vec2 = source.MVAnalyse(isb = true, lambda = 1000, delta = 2)
backward_vec1 = source.MVAnalyse(isb = true, lambda = 1000, delta = 1)
forward_vec1 = source.MVAnalyse(isb = false, lambda = 1000, delta = 1)
forward_vec2 = source.MVAnalyse(isb = false, lambda = 1000, delta = 2)
source.MVDenoise(backward_vec2,backward_vec1,forward_vec1,forward_vec2,tht=10,thSAD=300)
But it doesn't seem to open it :(
I renamed my VOBs to MPGs and they still play perfectly, and I'm using this script with AviSynth 2.58
LoadPlugin("C:\Users\username\Desktop\mpegdecoder_25_dll_20030216\MPEGDecoder.dll")
MPEGSource("D:\TEMP\PROJECT\VTS_01_1.mpg")
When I open the avs script in VirtualDubMod 15.10.3 it said it couldn't find a YV12 decompressor, but after installing Koepi's XVID codec it loads the script, but this is what I get:
Does anyone know what I did wrong here? I've been trying for days to get *any* script to work with this thing but so far nothing :(
Ady, could you perhaps tell us your workstation's specs? I'm curious as to what a beast of a machine you're using for this :)
And how's the old homestead coming along?
Even in formation they wouldn't move 100% at the exact same speed. Just watch that scene, it's just too noticeable that it's just three static props and the camera simply zooms in.
Just look at the formation of fighter planes during an air show, there's always a subtle difference.
I'm not suggesting that they all have hugely different speed and direction, just enough to make it more believable.
Adywan I'm sure you've noticed/fixed this already but there's something that's always bothered me in ESB.
Whenever we see several Star Destroyers in a scene they don't move in relation to each other, because all three were just static props and the camera moved in relation to them. Not always if course, in the asteroid chase scene the three Star Destroyers move in relation to each other, but for example before the Battle of Hoth we see three Star Destroyers in orbit and they all move the same.
Could you perhaps liven them up a bit? Make the two other Star Destroyers move a bit slower/faster than the first one?
From Wikipedia:
The Digital Betacam format records a DCT-compressed component video signal at 10-bit YUV 4:2:2 sampling in NTSC (720×486) or PAL (720×576) resolutions at a bitrate of 90 Mbit/s plus four channels of uncompressed 48 kHz / 20 bit PCM-encoded audio.
Are there any other preservation projects that use a digital betacam broadcast as source? Especially any that don't compress it to a DVD5 but perhaps DVD9 or better?
Also, is there a project that uses the uncompressed PCM from the laserdiscs as audio?
Thanks for all you comments so far :)
Well he says that only the ROTJ PAL has better quality so you'd be better of buying Ep6 PAL.
What he meant by upscaled is that for 4&5 they simply took the NTSC image and stretched it to fit the PAL version, whereas the ROTJ PAL image already is PAL to begin with.
Moth3r, thanks for the info :) Do you perhaps know of any comparison screenshots of the REIVAX version with for example the GOUT? Would it be worth downloading or is it only marginally better?
Thanks
EDIT: Are there also ESB and ROTJ REIVAX versions available? Or possible other digital betacam broadcasts of the OT?
But is it better quality than the laserdiscs?
I don't mind all of the SE additions, some of them were valid and beneficial to the movie (new Sandcrawler scene for example) but I too would love to have a better archival version of the theatrical versions, warts and all :)
EDIT: I came across a Star Wars REIVAX version, it claims to be from a digital betacam broadcast and thus better quality than the laserdiscs. Is this so and does anyone have some comparison shots?
I really don't see why we need to change the background buildings in that scene, they could use some of Ady's colour correction, sure, but I don't see anything wrong or outdated about them.
The sky and *some* of the buildings in the back do scream matte painting, but I really like their designs. And I think that changing them with generic buildings would take away from the beauty of this shot.
Just my two cents if course :)
I don't know, I thought it really does have slightly more resolution as is to be expected of PAL. But you guys would know more about this than me :)
Much appreciated :)
thanks for your help so far, I'll check out your link :)
EDIT: Is there perhaps a thread where I can see some comparison shots of this project?
Is anyone interested in improving the GOUT DVDs as best as possible? I’ve seen several threads detailing how to do stabilizing, colour correcting and upscaling the image of these versions but I can’t seem to find a single restoration project that does all this for all three movies.
I know that Moth3r did something similar for the GOUT Star Wars, but it’s only for the first film 😦
As far as laserdisc rips of the '93 Definitive Collector’s Edition go, the GOUT is the best, it might not be what we expected but I’m yet to come across a better rip to start this project with.
What I’m suggesting is something like this:
1. use the retail PAL GOUT as a basis because it has slightly more resolution
2. stabilize and colour correct the image, and remove grain as much as possible (just compare these colour corrected images with the original GOUT: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Methods-for-colour-matching-colour-grading/post/336687/#TopicPost336687)
3. create custom AC3 5.1 soundtrack based on the '97SE laserdiscs and '93 Collector’s Edition
4. make them as 3 DVD9s
I’m not much of an AV editor myself but from what I’ve seen on these forums I know it’s not a question of if it’s possible but rather if anyone wants to do this?
So are there any dedicated AV’ers out there who want to do this?
Thanks,
LG
