New thoughts about getting the OT on DVD
Time
I think another point of significance in the letter im drafting to FOX is going to be that the market for the OT is a special market. In more relative terms, a "collectors market". This sort of implies a lot of things I think. First of all, it pretty much bumps the inital MSRP. Also, it implies that the product needs minimal advertising.
I think id be presenting this as more of an offshoot than a re-re-release. Im sure that with the proper wording FOX would understand. Im not trying to convince them that Bobby Teenager knows the difference, neither do a lot of the people who were kids when the movies first came out.
The product I want them to sell is for a niche audience. I agree with you, this matter needs to be adressed in a very direct and specific way. But I should reinforce my first thoughts by adding all of this post.

The OT on DVD in my opinion shouldnt be marketed as a re-release. They wouldnt even have to make a commercial for it or anything. "Star Wars: Collector's Edition" Somethig to this effect. If a person picks up the back it tells them they are the Original Theatrical releases, not the versions being kicked around since 1997. Like I said, I think it sells itself to at least 50k people who are into SW enough to know the difference between the '77 version and the '97 version (ill even say this figure covers international recognition, and I think im shooting low). Aside from that, there are plenty of DVD fanatics who just get stuff to get stuff.

Im beating a dead horse at this point. I hope you see where im coming from. I dont think you were disputing me, im just letting you know ive thought about what you said, and I think that if it is presented correctly - the idea of the OT on DVD can still be very appealing to FOX...if it even matters.

New thoughts about getting the OT on DVD
Time
I was thinking today about how stubborn GL is being. I mean, saying he is being stubborn is giving him a lot. I can think of a number of harsher more fitting descriptions. But I digress.

Its obvious that even GL has to know what kind of money we are talking about with an OT release. And I think at least some people at FOX have to be aware of this intimidating figure. So if we cant appeal to GL personally, lets appeal to people with nothing personal at stake. FOX is in business to make money. If they realize, perhaps if they have it ground into understanding, just how much money they could make - perhaps that would be motivation for them to go out of their way to get the OT on DVD.

I love this petition. I think its exceptionally worded, and the concept is noble. But I think we'd have better luck writing letters to FOX with some details about these huge numbers they are missing out on.

Im not sure just how much control GL has. Its possible that this would be as fruitless as anything else. Maybe GL has such exclusive rights that he cant be persuaded. Its obvious that he has some kind of major stick in his ass about the OT. (For some reason it doesnt even exist to him now, nevermind that its the only reason he exists as he does now).

So if this has been discussed before, sorry. I was just thinking about the economics of it. If FOX released the OT in a box set for $100 dollars a unit, and made it limited production; say 100,000 units - i dont need to spell it out for you guys. Perhaps they think that there isnt a market for it, maybe we need to let them know.

Personally, im going to look into this. I need to find out who to write to at FOX, and then im going to start with a personal letter. And maybe after that a semi-petition.
Let me know what you think. Sorry this is so long winded.

Lucas on CNN.com - 'Why Lucas tinkered with Star Wars' article
Time
I keep arguing this very point with people. The fans are the people who made Star Wars what it is today, for him to turn his back on such a large number of fans is just not cool.

We all obviously know that there is no reasoning with the bastard. I have a new idea for how to get the OT, im sure its been mentioned, but I think ill start a new topic for it.

Yes, I bet you have!

"Uh yeah George that looks great, im glad we have the technology now to have them shoot at the same time" Approximation.

I mean seriously, everyone knows that in the late 70's, if there was a film, and in it two persons discharged weapons at the same time, you couldnt film it. So back then, GL was at a loss, so he just flipped a coin and it ended up with Han first. Then in '97, he felt a little itch "creative genius" and swapped it (maybe he thought nobody would care, it made Han seem like a real teddy bear). But now, in 2004 we have this new technology that allows people in movies to shoot simultaneously. Thank god.

I think many here need to get their priorities in order. It's a movie. I can't imagine what many here will do if something serious does happen in their life.

Whoa...are you here on this forum just to remind us of that? Or are you here because this goes above and beyond The Fast and the Furious. For you to say that Star Wars is just a movie, is like saying the The Wall is just an album. I mean, im not a huge fan of Pink Floyd - but for somebody to deny the significance of an amazing work of art by leveling with every other work of art in the medium is just silly.
Were Star Wars just a movie, it wouldnt have spawned an entire sub-culture, which has assimilated very well now into mainstream culture. Star Wars revolutionized film making, it revolutionized the way people thought of special effects. Star Wars...just a movie?

I can see what you are trying to get at...IF i stretch my brain REALLY far. But seriously man, it seems like you are making us out to be misguided or irresponsible or some shit. Im certain that the majority of us can/will/have handled serious things in our lives. What we are talking about here is a matter of entertainment and art, Id say that this is extrememely relevant and important to life. And because we take art or entertainment seriously is hardly grounds for saying that we wouldnt be able to handle something that you coin "serious" in our lives.

Surprise! DVDs preserve original version after all!

But it represents the OT - or it thinks it does - thats what Mr. Coffee is saying. People are all excited about the release, then they watch this special on A&E and its all footage from the OTR, which leads them to believe that is what they are getting with the DVDs. It may not be black and white, but I can definitely see Coffee's point, and I agree. It seems very likely that this is a ploy, just as much as the little sticker on the box set saying "the classic trilogy" like, classic since '97, or what?

Its all part of the snow-job that Lucas is doing on the world.

Getting the word out.
Time
My family looks at me like I have an abnormal number of facial features whenever I talk about this stuff. Ive been telling all the people I talk to about it. A lot of my friends and co-workers share the purist perspective.

Oddly a ton of people I meet, like at my school, dont care. They like the PT better somehow?!!?!, and they think that the new versions sound a lot better than the "outdated" ones.
Then again, I seem like an oddball, a lot of people my age havent even seen the OT, just the '97 versions. THAT, makes me want to cry.

Bossk, I see what you are saying. And its true, if Lucas was being purely capitalist he would do something like, release the OT in a box and charge $100 a unit. (Just an arbitrary price).

I think Im forming my conclusion based on my the opinion that he is eventually going to release the OT, at that point he will be capitalizing again. Some of us arent buying these DVDs but a lot of people are (obviously). If this does happen in the future than I think he seems a lot like Gates.

Currently though, your thoughts are more accurate.

Fans/Devotees, lets plan a serious strategy for next release
Time
Its really too bad that civil disobedience doesnt apply to this situation. I mean, it would be a lot of fun to just lay in front of GL's car or something, or all of us just go camp right on the edge of SkyWalker ranch, or whateverthehell its called. Too bad he probobly wont ever see the light. I mean seriously, if the prospect of mountains of cash didnt make him release the OT this time, what will?
Im not trying to be dismal. I really hope against hope we can get the OT on DVD, but I just dont think GL is being reasonable. And most people should recognize that you simply cannot battle the unreasonable with reason. I seriously dont even have a clue how we would go about getting the OT.
GL is a fiend.

Sorry if this seems like im not in support of you guys. I truly am, im just at the end of my rope when it comes to trying to figure out GL, and trying to gauge the likelyhood of the OT release.

Lethe - In greek mythology there were a number of rivers in the underworld. Lethe, translated "forgetfulness" or "oblivion" was a river that had to be crossed to get to elysium. The myth goes that when the shades of the dead (ghosts) drank from the river they forgot the life they were leaving so they could be at peace in the afterlife. Of important note is that when people were brought back to life (by gods for wars, etc) they had to drink from the river again to forget death and go back into life.

I really like transitional concepts like this. Its been my pen name for quite some time, and it seems fitting for a moniker on the web.

Its intimidating that you guys all know eachother and have built repoirs. I mean, the uninitiated may not want to venture opinions that frequently. Im trying to find a little niche on the forum.

Oddly some people dont seem to be disuaded - like the suddenly appearing GL fanboys, names witheld - they are posting all over the damn place.
Anyways, I think its important to stick around. Even though the movies released yesterday were not the OT, there is still hope...as silly as it might seem in the face of GL's absolute idiocy.

Question about PT to OT continuity
Time
Thanks for the input. Kingsama you are right, it will make a person's head hurt if they try to make sense of the relationship between the PT and OT.

I havent read anything from the EU, but that would seem to be applicable.

The way that Yoda and Ben conceptualized the force in the OT was one of the most compelling points in the trilogy for me. I have a lot of predisposition towards philosophy, etc. So they "Eastern" Concept of the Force seems more fitting for my preference...perhaps thats all that matters in determination - whatever you feel most comfortable with for explaining the force...lots of things in life are like that.
