Episode VIII : The Last Jedi - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

I don’t fully understand space technology in Star Wars universe, but if the Rebels need to be able to send out a distress call but can’t until they get to the not so hidden base how can Finn and Poe communicate via ship to ship while Finn is elsewhere in the galaxy. Furthermore, why didn’t the Rebels escape small group by small group on the ship Finn and Rose take.

Or why didn’t Maz send help?

This film should be better.

The Last Jedi: Official Review and Opinions Thread ** SPOILERS **
Time

I have enjoyed both films. Both films have been poorly written. I don’t understand the pacing or organization of these films, nor do I understand the direction they are taking this trilogy.

Kylo Ren’s character has not grown at all and Rey has not had any sort of struggle. What is the payoff here? Is she just Jedi Jesus and will just be invincible for 3 pointless movies?

The Luke flashbacks were cool but I feel like won’t age well. If they were going to do that, just make a another movie with all of that. It came off as fan fiction, something that people who liked the old EU would enjoy.

Are the Knights of Ren dead?

Why did Luke force project himself with his father’s lost lightsaber that Kylo already knew was destroyed?

It just seemed like lazy storytelling. How can we get characters to reveal plot points we want them to reveal? Have them project themselves across space and be in the same room together.

How exactly did Luke “not lose Rey” as Yoda tells him he can’t do if he just let’s himself die from force exhaustion?

I did enjoy this movie but WTF?!

Higher ticket prices go straight the the studios. That’s why snack prices are so ridiculous- it’s the primary revenue stream for most theaters, especially independent ones.

This. Movies like Star Wars, original Spider-Man, Pixar films see 80-90% ticket sales go directly to the studios the first 2 weeks. So, if you charge, say, $10 per ticket, you might make $200 per 100 tickets sold as opposed to the $800 the studio makes.

When the theater’s profit share goes up (40% in week 5), you are lucky to get 20 people per show.

Rise of the Rebellion: A Rogue One Edit (Released)

Right, I would remove the Coruscant dream sequence. It is only important because he calls her ‘Stardust’ but that information can be added to the new dream as a voiceover. As the final words she hears before she wakes up.

Again, this is your vision. Don’t let me hijack it. I just like removing the time jumps and planet hopping and getting right to it.

I likes lot of what you have done. Looks good.

I still think from a story telling standpoint that the Krennic/Erso scene in the beginning is better suited as A dream for Jyn as she is on board with Cassian. Start the film with the Death Star cone scene. It removes all time jumps that way. Just cut up the scene into flashes and recolor it like Rey’s force vision or Anakin’s vision.

Revenge of the Sith (The New Canon Cut) [ON HOLD INDEFINITELY]
Time

I know this is probably really late to the party but I’ve been thinking about the Vader Awakens scene a lot lately, and I think you can use parts from Rebels and the OT to make Vader’s final turn more powerful.

E: Anakin? Can you hear me?
V: Where is Padme?
E: In your anger, you killed her

Begin crushing stuff, Sound of using force builds

V: You must use the power of the dark side to save her
E: I’m afraid, my friend, she is lost

Full room crushing
E: Anakin…
V: Anakin Skywalker was broken. That name no longer has any meaning to me.
E: Rise, my friend. I look forward to completing your training.
V: Yes, master.

Breaks free, emperor smile and cackle from ROTJ.

This scene always bothered me, besides the campy scream, because we don’t see Vader make that pivot from sympathetic but misguided villain to cold blood sith lord. All the dialogue above can be pieced together from multiple sources.

Also, has anyone ever taken Palpatine dialog from the OT and used it to replace his over the top performance post-Windu death?

I’m glad they are ending on their own terms, instead of meandering on and declining in quality (Big Bang, Doctor Who under Moffat, etc) just to make more episodes. Hopefully we can have a quality season with no filler.

The Big Bang Theory was never good.

Disappointing Season 4 for REBELS will be its last. Can’t Filoni just have the crew do other shit in different regions of the galaxy while events in the OG OT are habbening?

I could see some of the characters of Rebels being part of the new show they are planning. He carried over his favorites from Clone Wars.

I honestly forgot what happened to that Sergio Leone styled bounty hunter from The Clone Wars series. Strange since I watched it all, chronological order.

I believe Filoni is ambiguous with the fates of his favorites (Ahsoka, Cade, Rex,etc) so he can keep their stories alive.

I agree with you on some spilling over into live action. I’ve got a funny feeling about Ezra and VIII

Is the musical cue for Binary Twin Sunset derived from some other piece or was it a 100% unique creation? Because, still, to this day it is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I’ve ever heard.

I assume you’re talking about the Force theme and not William’s first attempt at the scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYXLmHmTrzU

I don’t know if the Force theme had its inspiration in an earlier piece, that would be interesting to learn.

No, the specific cue for Binary Sunset. The entire theme (and score) are tremendous but the cue used for the Binary Sunset, with the single instrument leading and bringing in the whole orchestra as Luke looks up gives goosebumps every time. Ending it with a woodwind playing the Rebel Fanfare just further shows what an amazing job Williams did on this film.

When Did The Star Wars Prequels Become Cool?
Time

I actually enjoy the PT in so much that I enjoy any non-EU Star Wars materials. The fatal flaws of the PT can never be glossed over. To me, it boils down to 2 points:

Hayden makes the Anakin character wholly unlikeable and portrays him as creepy. You never feel anything over his fall from grace bc you don’t care for him at any point. You can blame George’s dialogue all you want but good actors like Ford/Fisher took some cringe worthy stuff and made it work because of their portrayals of the characters.

AOTC is totally and utterly confusing. George put in plot threads that were never resolved or were leftover from other versions of the script. If George would ever have any humility over the film, I would actually like to see him try a new directors cut of this film that films new scenes, uses alternate takes, updates the CGI and restructures the film in a non-confusing manner. Ask Kathleen Kennedy or any of his other friends for help in fixing this mess.

I don’t mind Jar Jar Binks any more (that doesn’t make him good) and ROTS on the whole is a good watch (despite the slow middle). The battle droids are less annoying bc of Clone Wars. In fact, Clone Wars has changed my opinion on a lot of the characters of the PT.

So, is this canon? Well, no, but everything in it fits canon. Motz explained that it’s sort of like hearing the story of what happened, but from a child.

The conversations/events, etc that happen are not canon, however, whether a character is dead or alive is because it has to ‘fit’ in the canon.
