Thought on de-SE'ing the DVD
Time
The quality is decent. None of it has finished effects (ie: no saber effects for Obi-wan) and no planet explosion for Alderaan. I tried splicing them into the film once and it turned out pretty well, but you could tell that happened. Basically I used masks instead of painting everything back in the right way.

Anyways, I only bring it up because I really like the Obi-Wan part that was cut:

The exchange goes:

Vader: Your powers are weak old man!
Obi: You can't win, Darth. If my blade should find it's mark, you will cease to exist but no matterif you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.
**Saber Clash**

Does alot better job of explaining why Vader can't win.

Editous, since you seem to do a wonderful job with the painting and masking of film any chance of taking a crack at the scenes found in the bonus material on the DVDs? The ones I mean particularly are the 'If my blade should find it's mark' with Obi-Wan and the "And you call yourselves human" scene with Tarkin and Leia. I only bring this up because you seem to have corrected similar scenes that were actually in the film.

Lucas to rerelease Star Wars films in 3D
Time
Kiss Me Kate was also availble in 3D and it was also a great film. 3D films struggled because big name directors did not initially gravitate towards it. This is a different scenerio. Studios like Disney and Fox, directors like Lucas, Speilberg, Cameron, Rodriguez and Zemeckis are already lining up to be a part of it. Would you say that Cinemascope is a gimmick? Because it was spawned from the same idea 3D was.

Just because I'm excited about this film doesn't mean that I'm in the wrong forum. People can support the original versions of the film and appreciate changes Lucas makes to the films. I'm a fan of cinema first, Star Wars second. It's not my battle cry I carry to the grave "OOT or Death!!". I think both versions are important, just as both versions of Touch of Evil are important. The original was a B-Movie that was very hammy. The re-cut version years later made it the original version that Orson Welles intended based on his production notes he had written. Both have a place in the history of film.

It's a fun way for George Lucas to do something with the trilogy. I am sure he isn't looking at this as the 'definitive edition' of his films, so the normal re-visioned version that was just released will still be the ones that people can marvel at and we can still pine for the original.

This is an experience film. Tell me that you are not thoroughly excited to have the cave monster come flying out at you as the Falcon zips away or have Obi Wan swinging his saber up in your grill? How about the X-Wing barrelling down the trench right at you. Obviously he is going to manipulate the shots for the 3D effect, but I can only see positive things from this. Fun for the audience to feel like kids again.

If you aren't excited, you've become too wrapped up in the whole OOT thing and can't just enjoy the films for just that: movies.

"It's not something that has been done in GOOD movies"

Apparently you haven't seen Dial M for Murder, one of Hitchcock's best films. It stars the lovely Grace Kelly and is availble now from Warner Home Video. I suggest you check it out before you go around saying things like that.

I really don't see what the complaints are. 3D can not be viewed on DVD (pretty much) to date. That means you won't be seeing this release to home theater and you would have to drive to a digital 3D location to watch it.

I think it's just good ole fashion movie going fun, the way Lucas intended for his films to be. He's combining some of the great things of early cinema: 3D and serials.

It's about 15 MBs. I am going to have to recap it. It is WAAAAY too dark and TMPGENC doesn't do a very good job of brightening it.

If there are any specific settings you would like me to use in TMPGENC, go ahead and post them now so when I do the recap tonight you won't have to re-encode it later.

I captured it, but the capture seems alittle dark.

Also, I don't have any upload space so if anyone wants it, they will have to get it in email and upload it to for everyone else.

I may do a different capture later on with a s-video output from the Gamecub. I had to use the standard RCA jacks. I'll go to gamestop and see if they have an svid chord for cheap.

Need Help Finding Struzan Art
Time
This is a bit OT, but does anyone have the link for those Struzan Hellboy posters (the unsigned ones). I remember there was a link up on the net to purchase them about 5 months ago, but can't find it anywhere.

I just hung my Episode III poster up on the wall, it's nice. The lava looks a bit queer under the title and it doesn't ahve a tag line at the top, but other than that it's pretty good.

Your DVD covers are great. I'm thinking about using the others you uploaded earlier.

George Lucas on 60 Minutes.
Time
First off, George Lucas isn't a moron. He created the two characters that you use for you 'User Name'. Secondly, the idea of having the circle be complete with the Anakin Skywalker whose story was told in the previous chapters is probably what he says he 'envisioned' which is what he did in the theatrical ROTJ. But the person playing him changed, so he made the switcheroo.

George Lucas on 60 Minutes.

Oh dear Lord. Your analogies fail because it is still his house. He can paint it neon pink and no one can make him do otherwise. Everyone in the neighborhood can call him up and tell him they liked it the old color, and it was better the old color, but as long as he can sleep at night with it neon pink, that's his own choice, it's his house.

I want the OT to be availible as it was seen originally. But my personal wants have nothing to do with what George Lucas can do as an artist. If he wants to repaint the mural, it's his choice, it's his painting. Providing an unaltered copy of the painting for the masses would be nice, but there is no burden upon him to do so.

George Lucas on 60 Minutes.

I thought it was excellent. Much to the chigrin of us who post here, Lucas still stands by the idea that these are his films and he can do whatever he wants with them.

I particularly liked his analogy:
"Say I panted my house white. Someone comes along and says I should paint it green. But I don't want it to be green. Maybe it should be green, maybe it will look better being green, but I want it white. It's going to be white."

Empire Of Dreams 2
Time
Couple quick fixes:
1) Ewoks switched to Wookies
2) Endor moon is far more protected with the brush cleared away from the 'back door' as most military people would do. To dangerous having all that cover around.
3)Sandstorm subplot would be reinserted. During that time, Luke discusses how he continued training after he left Yoda, refining his skills as they hunted for Han Solo across the galaxy.
4)Subplot of the Alliance seeing Solo, Skywalker, Leia and Lando as insubordnate outsiders. They left the fight against the Empire to go looking for Han Solo. I would not welcome them back to the cause without reserve. Make the plot point that they agree to go on the Endor mission to re-establish good faith between them and the Alliance.
5)Boba Fett jets off of the barge once the s**t hits the fan. We have a shot of him falling back to Jabba's side. When it all starts to fall to pieces, Leia still strangles Boba Fett. Jabba looks at Boba and insults him while asking him why he does nothing. Boba Fett shrugs and walks away. Last we see of Boba Fett. Make it less personal, more business. As the story flows now, he's dealt with Jedi and wishes not to do so again.
6)The finale on the Endor moon should not exist. The scenes of the people rejoicing throughout the galaxy should stay in. However, have the principles talk from various ships (ala ESB) and go their seperate ways. The Tatooine scenes feature Luke returning home as the people rejoice, Leia and Han returning to Corscant, Lando to Bespin...you get the idea. Have this grand story end with it truly being a tale of misfits who came together at the right moment and saved the galaxy. From there, like all great warriors, they must return back to the world the left. They are different, but the place they left is not.
7)Luke burries Vader at the Homestead. The circle would then indeed be complete. Final shot of Luke looking out at the twin suns of Tatooine. Wipe, Credits.

That's just some of the stuff I would do. Lucas really skimped out on some of his mythology character traits in the final film. Not sure why.

Mike,

I enjoy checking the site to see **how** you are doing what you are doing and what errors you are pointing out. It makes it easier for those of us that might want to take the DVD and **fix** these problems. In fact, I had gotten as far as the Tantive stuff on my VIAO before the slave drive crashed and lost the project.

So, anyways.....keep up the good work. Can't wait to see the next update.

Quickie question about VOB ripping

I had no idea about the ability to edit VOB's with Vegas.

Oh, and about my 'promise', don't worry I haven't forgotten. I don't really have a computer, as this is an old HDD I had to boot up because my brand new 250 GB drive got attacked by a virus onslaught and changed the file system to FAT12. Thus, all the files are in there but I can't get the computer to agree with PartitionMagic that the drive is indeed bigger than 10.0 MB.
