I think the O-OT WAS restored
Time
Some have argued that the DVD release was done for two reasons: to increase interest in ROTS to also increase revenue, but more than likely to pay for ROTS to be made. If you read the making of book, there is this constant theme of not wasting digital shots, not falling behind timetables so extra workers don't have to be hired, just an overall theme that LFL (with the opening of new facilities on the horizon) was getting strapped for cash and certainly couldn't a)lose control of the film to financers and b)couldn't push back the release date.

You'd have to cut it just before they cut the floor and somehow find a way to explain how they end up in the shaftway. Or maybe make it seem like they cut the floor and fall into the shaft.

The way it is set up, could you somehow juxtapose a scene between the two, and still make it flow?

I've made it about halfway through Path to the Darkside, and content wise I like it. However, I'm a bit dismayed at the lack of wipes or transitions between the deleted materials, edited materials and the original stuff.

Just something that is classically Star Wars that I wish could have been recreated.

Can you imagine Han fighting Luke, that is what the duel in ROTS should have felt like.
Time
Lucas didn't develop the friendship enough 'PRE-ROTS', however, once we got to the film I think he did the best job he could putting emotion into the fight. I ran ROTS at my movie theater, so I saw it upwards of 50 times, and everytime Anakin looks up that ramp to see Obi Wan standing there, I still got goosebumps. Lucas did well conveying the betrayal and the emotion in that fight.

But you are right, up until the last film, he stuck too closely to an ObiWan/QuiGonn style relationship when it would have benefited from a Han/Luke relationship.

ADM, I was going over the list of your edits in ROTJ, and they are very limited. The ones you did are substantial in their work, but I really think you could have trimmed down the Ewoks on screen time to make the film not only tighter, but less 'little kid friendly'. I know this edit was your vision for the films, I just was hoping you could comment on this.

Return of the Jedi - was it what it was meant to be?
Time
While ROTJ has some great scenes it, I'm not going to lie: As a kid, the only reason I took any liking to it was the fact that it was 'cleaner' and 'newer' than the other two films. As I grew up, I realized just HOW much better the first two were, especially ESB. Since the restorations of the original source materials to make the films crystal clear and crisp, ROTJ is loosing it's standing more and more.

I ranked it below ROTS, something I thought I'd never do of an OT film from a PT film. And if ANH did get THAT good after the jumping off point at Mos Eisley, ROTS just might have pulled ahead of it.

We often forget how slow and muddled the beginning of Star Wars was from the point the droids leave the Tantive and end up at Ben's place. From a film study point of view, that kind of pacing is generally the kiss of death for a film. And don't forget, George had even more exposition of Luke as a teen in the desert before the studio laughed at him.

But don't get this criticism confused. I love all Star Wars films more than most films. But I'm also realistic about them. ESB, in my opinion was probably the 4th or 5th best movie made in the history of American cinema. So, for ROTJ to be such a let down is absolutely a failure.

If he intended it to be an underealized conclusion following two of the greatest films in American Film history, then ya, it was what it was meant to be.

Otherwise, it was just him trying to get too cute after the darker tone of ESB. He needed the darker tone in ROTJ for the first half, because Vader's redemption and Leia and Han's love would have brightened the ending. We didn't need fuzzy creatures and slowly paced romps in the woods. Let the great story tell itself, and don't treat the audience like 6 year olds. We promise we won't cry, we didn't during ESB.

After realizing that much of the dialogue in the Shaak Ti scene was later reused in the bridge scene between Greivous and the Jedi, I was a bit distraught. Of course, until I put in my copy of the Star Wars EP III Game. It has the condensed bridge scene in what I feel would be the difinitive version should the Shaak Ti scene be re-inserted:

62 EXT. BRIDGE-TRADE FEDERATION CRUISER

OBI-WAN, ANAKIN PALPATINE, and ARTOO are captured by GENERAL GRIEVOUS. They stand before the ALIEN DROID GENERAL.

GENERAL GRIEVOUS: Oh yes. General Kenobi, the Negotiator. We've been waiting for you. That wasn't much of a rescue.

A BATTLE DROID walks to GENERAL GRIEVOUS and hands him the JEDI'S lightsabers.

GENERAL GRIEVOUS: Your lightsabers will make a fine addition to my collection.

OBI-WAN: Not this time. And this time you won't escape.

ANAKIN: Artoo.

ARTOO creates a distraction by extending all his arms, shooting out electrical pulses, and bouncing around.
OBI-WAN, hands restrained with electrobonds, spins around, reaches out and, using the Force, yanks his lightsaber out of the General's hand, ignites it, and cuts his bonds. He continues to spin around and cuts Anakin free.

Atleast, that's the way the scene plays out in the game and it works well. I will just have to wait to see what EXACTLY made it into the Shaak Ti scene, but until then, this is what I think is our best option for allowing the two scenes to co-exist without it just sounding silly.

And if you wanna get technical, there's "no proof" that it's anything substantially (or even minorly) different. If it was some brand new, spiffy OT thing, I would think that would be noted.

I did, because you have no proof. You have some good assumptions, but you don't know.

I could make a case that since Lucas admitted that the OOT wasn't going to be availible anymore due to the loss of VHS and that he may be releasing it in the future so people can access it, I would think a barebones edition of that would be in order.

I could make a case that this set fixes the little problems with the DVDs with no real creative changes, and that's why it's cheaper and lacks the extras. Basically 'replacements' for last years.

I could also go on, because I have just as much proof as you do.

They played around with it, but never could get a close enough sounding Liam Neeson voice for Lucas's liking. Thus, it was dropped.

Anyways, the extra Dooku battle line w/video is included in the Revenge of the Sith video game cut scene. The quality may be a slight drop, but for the 2 seconds that it is used, I don't believe it will be too noticeable.

What?

I'd like someone to provide one piece of evidence from either FOX or LFL that this is just a repackaging of the 2004 release.

I know Lucas discussed in the 'Making of ROTS' book that he had noticed the windows problem in ESB, and it would be fixed for all future releases.
