The legendary "Starkiller Ranch" Thread
Time
That ANH lightsaber duel is pretty good, but VERY rough. The musical cues are way off. When they begin to talk about 'you can't win Darth' the cue should be from the "1:58" on Track 3 of the ROTS soundtrack. It is the moment in ROTS when the two talk, and it blends it much better. There is alot of mixed themes in that version that are distracting.

It's just weak writing if you ask me. Yoda or Windu would have suspected and I think Kenobi would have definately figured it out. Heck, he knew Fett was bad news when he connected him to the Bounty Hunter that was trying to kill Padme.

I was wrong before about Jango. They knew before that he was in league with Dooku before the Senate created the Clone Army.

ObiWan calls back to the 'old folks home' before the battle with Jango and says they are using the bounty hunter named Jango Fett, but he does not believe that the Clones have been involved in the plot to assassinate Senator Amidala. That line is in there. The fact that Jango Fett was the source 10 years ago and that he has now been hired to kill Padme is seen as a disconnect by the Jedi.

When they next hear from Obi Wan, he has discovered HUGE amounts of a Droid Army ordered by the Trade Federation and Seperatists. The Commerce Guilds and Corporate Alliance both pledged their armies to Count Dooku, who he has now linked to attempting to kill Padme. At this point, the Jedi have no choice but to accept the Clone Army. Their ability to use the Force is diminished and they cannot fight a full scale war. If they do not use the Clones, the Republic will be destroyed by the Seperatists.

The Jedi serve the Senate, and the Chancellor was granted the power to form a Grand Army. At that point, since they do not distrust Palpatine yet...if they completely went against the wishes of the Senate and the leader, they'd be turning their back on the Republic. Even if they walked away, they have no control over the use of the Clones.

Another prequel vs. OT Discrepancy
Time
Ok, before this completely breaks down.

Tarkin's comment is not so much directed at Obi-Wan's age, but rather that if the Empire has continued and that this rebellion has been in existence, it would make sense for one of the last known surviving Jedi to have atleast been involved or come out and attacked. It's been almost 20 years. Do you think that if the US did not hear or see OBL for 20 years, they would still think he was alive? No, of course not. However, Vader respects the Force and respects ObiWan's dedication to it...and the theme that Lucas stresses in Prequels: Patience. Vader continuely lacks patience, even when searching for Luke and it is what brings him misfortune.

I believe the next line goes something like, "You are all that remains of that ancient religion". I think this also refers to the Empire's search and destruction of all remaining Jedi. The Jedi have become unimportant, not a worry for the Empire..and Tarkin with his massive hubris is far from concerned for Obi Wan.

As far as Obi Wan aging that much in 20 years, it might be a stretch for some...however, Obi Wan is living in the middle of a sahara style planet, in an adobe hut with very little protection from sandstorms, constant heat and sun. Look at US Presidents. Look at the amount of aging they go through in an 8 year span.

(I could be wrong about Obi-wan being the only one to state it, other than the Kaminoans. It's early, and I'm tired. )

You're right. I watched it last night and I found that the whole line can be cut and it allows it to still flow. The Kaminos say his name, and Obi Wan says his name. That's it.

Idea & found on ebay: 16mm film SCOPE Star Wars RETURN of THE JEDI MINT LPP

True, but the point of this is preservation and the standard for cataloguing digital transfers are 4k. All of Warner's classic films have been logged as such. Of course, no one here has the kind of HDD space to do such a thing, but I think we should atleast strive for a HD-DVD quality transfer, due to the mass production of them being right around the corner. We don't want to make a low bitrate transfer of the film now and then have to drag it back out later to upgrade.

Digital film at 4k now captures 99.9% of the information on the film. It's not going to get much stronger for older films. However, the major knock against digital film is that it lack the grain or aliveness that 35mm stock film has. For cinemaphobes, that's a problem.

Yes, but Sifo Dyas isn't the only thing that doesn't make any sense. Dooku's discussion with Obi Wan about Jango and the Sith seems completely out of place. While I understand he is trying to trick Obi Wan, it certainly just seems like he is tired and out of the loop. Then, when he beats down both Obi Wan and Anakin, he looks upset about what he has done...but there is no way that he could be confused about right and wrong as Anakin was. Dooku seems dismayed a Sith is in power, but does everything every step of the way to help him.

He's not conflicted, it just seems like half of it was shot during production and half of it was shot during pickups and then it was all blended together.

Shadows of the Empire - a TV show idea?
Time

This will probably take some heat, but I personally would like to see Lucas do the 3D CGI television show he is planning on doing based on this book/game. Make it a 20 to 40 part show that can be cut together as one large movie. It would help develop the characters of the bounty hunters, some other background characters in the OT and would be able to feature special appearences by Luke, Leia, Lando, Chewy, Vader, Stormtroopers, Boba Fett, Jabba, etc. With the beauty of the CGI is Lucas can flex the muscle of Lucasfilm and ILM and show off just how ‘realistic’ they can get the show.

I always thought the story told by the N64 game was about the only EU I could stand, and still do. I’d hate to see a good story, good score and good idea go to waste. Might as well do something for OT fans, instead of pilling it on for the PT fans. I’m sure Hammill would be more than willing to do the voice for not only the Luke character, but I’d venture a bet he’d do the voice acting for Render and other characters.

Ah well, it’s just a thought. We’ve really not ever gotten anything aimed at what made Lucas famous, just his more recent works.

if lucas had left the ot alone

Walk away? On this forum? Yes. In general, no...because while all of us here want the OOT released, there is a LARGE number of fans that have embraced the PT, or atleast the final two films of the PT. Even though TPM was lauded be fans and critics alike, the number of repeat viewings was ridiculous when you compare it to the number of people that ACTUALLY liked it. That's not just 8-12 year olds going to see the film. That is fans, OOT or just plain OT alike going back to see a film that really wasn't very good.

Whether it was intended or not, alot of the performances, dialogue and events that happen in the OT have been greatly enhanced by the PT. You almost get a sense that Owen Lars vaguely remembers C3PO, with his quick offhand comment about the droids training, and that CP3O remembers something about working on a farm like that, being trained on equipment similiar to it.

You have to wonder a few things. 1) The print quality. 2) the amount of information a 16mm film holds. 3) at what k/b coding level anyone on this forum can capture the film. Telecine will not simply be better than the LDs. The DVDs were downconverted 4k captures...I doubt anyone can get to that level or even close. However, it would be interesting if it would even be worth investing in if we can't get a high level encode.

***The "Darth Editous" Episode IV DVD Info and Feedback Thread*** - a partially "de-specialed" DVD
Time
Darth Editous, if you ever plan on diving back into ANH, I noticed another error that has probably been there since 77.

When Luke is trying to get R2 to play Leia's message for the first time in his shop, the recording keeps repeating over and over. The first two times it stays focused on the recording and we can hear the message. Then, the recording keeps repeating, but the focus cuts between Luke, C3P0 and the recording. Yet, we cease to be able to hear it. At the very least, it should be audible in the rear speakers.

If the O-OT ever came out, the future of SW is with the PT fans.
Time
I've always looked at the Star Wars films as I do most other films, with a critical eye. ROTJ is a collossal failure, and if I hear one more person that sings the praises of that silly Ewok song and then chides a fan of the PT, I'm going to poke them in the eye with my thumb. Empire Strikes Back is one of the Top 7 All-Time Cinematic Acheivements, storytelling, acting, score, special effects and pacing. Even it has a flaw: Mark "IliketouserunonsentencesortheywilldieifIdon't" Hammill. What good faith, what cross genre gaps Lucas had achieved with ESB to bring in fans, he kills the momentum, the tone he set in ESB by sticking us in the desert for the first 45 minutes in a drawn out rescue scene, and then pummells us to death with overtly 'cute' Empire killers. The story of Luke Skywalker (and Anakin) for that matter takes a MAJOR backseat. You can't do that, especially when you've got 1 final film to tie it up. You brought it to the forefront, you drew the viewers in, don't reduce it to a subplot.

Even the original Star Wars is flawed. The intro of the characters is too drawn out. The jumping off point should be atleast 15 minutes earlier. Spending 7 or 8 minutes with the droids walking around the desert seems more like filler than good exposition.

The PT will face criticism as the viewers get older, sans 1 film. Revenge of the Sith is truly a great film. Say what you want about Lucas, his overuse of CGI(as some call it) or his cardboard acting, he shows the magic, the storytelling and the direction that had him at one time considered one of the best young directors of his time. Fans of the Star Wars series will, I feel, look at ROTS in the same vein as they do ANH and ESB. The more Lucas tweaks ROTJ, the more it will have a place with the 'new' Star Wars fans.

As far as LOTR, it sets the bar when it comes to adaptation. When it comes to film making, eh. The films are bloated, and it's almost ridiculous to think that other than fanboys, ANYONE is going to sit down and watch the films on a regular basis. They are great stories, don't get me wrong, but they also created probably the worst trend in Hollywood right now...the anti-climactic rolling endings. Keep throwing out various endings, various climax throughout the film and people will eat it up, I guess.

If the Star Wars universe is left to the PT fans, so be it. Worse things could happen of course. They will come to appreciate the films probably more than we have. They will see it as one giant arching storyline, watching characters like Boba Fett, Obi Wan, Anakin, Luke, Han and Leia grow up as the universe seems to swirl around them. They will pick the films up at the starting point, and will grow attached to each character in the traditional linear sense. As the grand tragedy of Anakin Skywalker unfolds, it will ring more true. When Luke is forced to fight his father, to them it will seem more conflicted rather than Luke coming off as weak.

The affinity of some towards characters like Jar-Jar will wane, and they will see it as over the top. Hopefully Lucas does fix this somewhat in subsequent releases. However, the PT fans will certainly be there in 35 years, I have no doubt in my mind. Just look at the popularity of the Clone Wars cartoons, not only with children, but with young to middle aged adults. It isn't because of nostalgia. It's a connection to these characters, similar to those people on here had towards Luke and Han, some of you Wicket (but I won't judge).

The feeling of 'emptyness' that is left now that there is no Star Wars film in the foreseable future is certainly disheartening to me, in particular. For all my life there have been rumors, and movements towards a Star Wars film 'coming'. For the last, what...7 years...I've been spoiled with the idea that there is still another piece to fill in the puzzle, another adventure in this series. How is Lucas going to tie it all up, what new characters, locales, weapons, spaceships and twists is he going to give us. Now? Time to grow up, I guess.
