The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **

Ben Solo…?

Have I just taken that for granted and “Solo” was never actually used in the film? Now I can’t remember.

That’s what I’m asking. I always just assumed it was Ben Solo but I don’t remember if it says in the film. I don’t remember if they say that Han and Leia get married. So is it Ben Solo, Ben Organa or Ben Skywalker (since that’s his mother’s true family name).

Who is CPY?

Yoda told Luke “your weapons, you will not need them” when he entered the cave.

He tells him that what he will find in the cave is only what he takes with him. That’s why he told him not to take it. If he takes fear and aggression into the cave, that is what he will find. It had nothing to do with being a pacifist.

Irrelevant because he doesn’t use a lightsaber in the entire OT. He doesn’t even fight in the OT. He’s on death’s doorstep. And yet somehow, 20 years ealier (a blink of an eye in his lifespan), he’s using a lightsaber and jumping around like Daffy Duck. That’s not the Yoda character that appeared in the OT.

At least he’s not fighting in TPM, but only because Lucas temporarily stuck with a puppet for one more movie.

That wasn’t the point I was making. The reason he told Luke that was because of the nature of the cave, not because of something about Yoda the character.

You can’t love the PT and all the other films. Of course, that would be silly.

You can’t?

I think the IV, V and RO are vastly superior to the PT. I think TFA and ROTJ suffer from some of the same problems the PT does, minus the CGI complaints. I love all of the Star Wars films, much like I love the Clone Wars tv show and Star Wars Rebels because they all tell a much larger story about a universe I love.

The prequel films are nowhere near the quality of ANH or ESB but I think mixed in with the dislike people have for them is that it changed the story/characters they always thought they were. It seems like the film adaptation of a novel effect. People had ideas about what the Jedi Knights were, who Anakin Skywalker was, how the Clone Wars played out, how the Empire was formed and these films didn’t agree with that.

There are cringeworthy moments in the prequels for sure. However, I used to think TPM was just awful and Jar Jar Binks ruined the film. Over time, he has bothered me less much like the Ewoks would had I seen that film at an older age.

So…will this edit effect Season 3 of Rebels?

Yes, the Rebels of Phoenix squadron will be tasked with completing the Wampa arm scene for this edit. Dave Filoni just tweeted it.

Oh, so that’s where this rumour started then. Thanks to this i’ve had a tonne of messages/ emails asking if it’s true Dave Filoni is now involved in this project. I’m surprised at how many thought that this could actually be true. So, to put the record straight, NO, there is no truth to this whatsoever.

This…this is something.

Final grade of this movie? I think it’s as poorly made as the prequels honestly.

Sounds reasonable.

We had a decade or more of people who criticized everything Star Wars that came out. It was ok because the majority of people believed the prequels were inferior to the originals. Now that there is new content that isn’t widely panned, we are still seeing the same stones being thrown. It’s a weird phenomenon.

I would be interested to know just how many more subplots/alternate plots/deleted scenes were filmed from Rogue One. For fan editors, I wonder if there is enough footage to split the film into two parts. The climax of film one being the events that happen on Eadu. The second film being all about the big moments for the Rebellion and Erso’s group attacking Scariff.

I’m not suggesting that this theatrically should have been two films or anything like that. From a fan edit POV, I wonder how different the first hour of the film was with all this alternate footage we are seeing. The stuff with Saw, the shots of Vader in front of the Death Star screen, the weirdos on Jedha. Even restoring the original plot point that the communications dish and the archives were not located in the same building and having Erso make her way across the island and battling the garrison.

I like the film the way it was cut for the theatrical release, although I would still remove the flashback scene and replace it with a crawl but I feel like there is so much that was removed and then replaced that there is almost a whole other film in there.

One could argue that after what Tarkin did to that Imperial facility, the Emperor might instruct Vader to keep a close eye on him, lest the good Governor get any funny ideas.

Well, keep in mind that the Emperor also once (if you accept the prequels) created an entire robot army and an entire clone army, had them fight each other in a destructive civil war and then called the whole thing off in the matter of like 20 minutes killing everyone important on both sides.

I don’t think he’d have a problem with what Tarkin did.

4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

I actually think Disney is going to go back, 4k scan the original film since the SE would be an upscale to get it to 4k ( I think). They will clean that up and release it. From there, I could see George and Disney working together to create a new Special Edition with updated SFX/CGI to make all their ‘new canon’ fit better.

This is all just made up in my head but Disney is flooded with cash and re-releasing ANH using the SFX they used for Rogue One seems like something they would do for the 40th.
