We’d kicked around modifying TLJ but I really don’t want to.

The retcon of her parents being Palpatine flavored is one thing, but we’re trying to make it fit in better by reducing the double repression.

“You were right, they were no one… I’ll tell you what happened to them and why.” (No direct mention of selling her to protect her, so there’s not the implication she’s repressing something further about that.)

The only line remaining that muddies that slightly modified angle is “You remember more than you say.” It implies she’s keeping something down, and it isn’t clear what it might be.

In TFA and TLJ Rey believes her parents were ‘noble’ and loved her, then “admits” they were deadbeats and feels some consolation in the confession that she shouldn’t keep looking for them and move on. Then when their memory is tapped into in TROS she gets angry and tries to fight away the pain, recalling that yes indeed they loved her very much and all.

Yeah, but I would like to have the retconning of TLJ be surgical, if possible.

If the line is out there, I really like the sound of “You don’t need to say anything. I’ve been in your head.”

My overly-intense look at the line suggests it could be read as “Ah, but all along, including the dramatic moment in TLJ, you were double-repressing your memories.”

Poppasketti:
You were right when you broke down and confessed that your parents were no one, admitting the truth. However, they appeared that way by their choice. I know what happened to them."

Jar Jar Bricks:
“I see your parents. They match your true confession as nobodies, but only because they chose to appear that way. I know what happened to them.”

I do wonder if the line “You remember more than you say” also poses a problem. Kylo goes on to reveal the circumstances of their death, which isn’t something Rey could have known beforehand. This line seems to undermine the sincere confession about her own parents in TLJ. I feel it is important to maintain, even retroactively, that film’s moment of Rey admitting the truth to herself. Not admitting partially but still blocking out a deeper, contradictory truth. Rey can learn her parents were connected to Palpatine in TROS, and that doesn’t have to infringe on her sincerity in TLJ.

Wonder if merely “I’ve been inside your head” could carry the moment or if any lego dialogue could be slotted in. Not sure what he’d ideally say instead, though.

Thanks for those thoughts, as well as in the COD thread so far. I feel like I was really able to do with the prequels what I set out to do: implement what prior editors have done in a well-executed whole package that could serve as a genuine replacement for those who want to use it that way. (With LOE taking up a noteworthy ‘minority voice’ in the lineage of fan editing that movie.) Glad to hear you enjoyed these two!

TROS telegraphs Ben escaping the DSII wreckage by finding an intact TIE fighter. As was already pointed out, we changed this for TROS:A to satisfy a nerdy nitpick of “Hey in ANH didn’t they say a fighter like that couldn’t get deep into space on its own?” It’s not really necessary, and future SW content beyond ANH seems to have abandoned the idea that only large craft can navigate hyperspace. Nevertheless, it felt like something worth tackling for a fan edit becausewhynot.

I don’t really feel a need to change the word ‘traveled,’ but I can if there’s another wording that I feel isn’t a compromise. We will see.

I did not capitalize anything in TROS because… why would I? Not every crawl needs to have CAPITAL LETTERS, and especially not for terms that already had CAPITAL LETTERS in prior crawls. Of the six ‘Lucas’ saga films, I believe three of them had no CAPITAL LETTERS at all, and there things capitalized in one crawl tend not to be capitalized when they appear again in subsequent crawls. TFA and TLJ each already capitalized the FIRST ORDER and RESISTANCE so I figure we can give it a rest. Otherwise the ST would be the only trilogy with CAPITAL LETTERS in each crawl.

There’s one more thing in the crawl that I don’t think has been discussed yet, but I’ve noticed it on my first watch of V1.

In the line “Meanwhile, Supreme Leader Kylo Ren has traveled to Mustafar (…)” the word “traveled” is American English spelling. British English spelling is normally “travelled”.

I’m not sure about Hal’s other edits, but unless I’m mistaken, all theatrical Star Wars crawls have specifically avoided this problem by not using any such words.

If you’re editing the crawl, perhaps it makes sense to use another word here too e.g. “flied” or “journeyed”.

Hmm, interesting point. I think ‘traveled’ sounds more natural than those two synonyms but if it can be worded equally well I’d be okay with a change in vocabulary.
