I’m okay with the continuity error for the same reason as the filmmakers who certainly would have known about it. Things like that don’t bother me, and never have. It’s not a story problem, just an artifact of this being a movie rather than actual events.

Threepio now winks back at Luke in TLJ.

Threepio’s eyes are occasionally made into emojis to convey his feelings.

What major plot aspects are changed for Ascendant in regards to Rey and Palpatine?

Palpatine’s plan is streamlined to rely less on an unspoken sense that his spiritual heir needs to be (or is in some way better to be) a biological descendant. He appears now to desire Rey dead as the last Jedi, and makes an apparently credible threat to Kylo Ren that he will possess him if he disobeys. When Kylo is taken off the board, he directs Pryde to prepare to lure Rey whom he tries to manipulate upon arrival, using the less than effective playbook he used for Luke back in the day.

When Rey has a vision of herself on the Sith throne, she has something that can continue to unsettle her even after the redemption of Ben Solo, whether she’s aware of it or not. And Kylo’s pitch is now for the two to join forces and destroy Palpatine rather than usurp him. Rather similar now to Dooku’s offer to Obi-Wan in Ep2. Kylo appears to desire Rey’s alignment with himself, similar to TLJ, more than to use her as a convenient political ally. She has more now to be tempted by in his offer, as this is not the specific thing that she had feared from her vision.

Leia and Luke were not aware of Rey’s Palpatine lineage. It does not make sense that Luke would have known during TLJ, and I don’t know how Leia would possibly have, although the EU is obligated to straighten that out by some means at some point. Luke knows what Rey knows by the time they meet in this film, and calls her hangup by asking, “So what?”

The dagger is no longer explicitly Rey’s parent’s murder weapon. This reduces the power or coincidence, albeit one that isn’t too much of a stretch. It can now be something Ochi happened to have, and it’s spiritual direction rather than technical allows one to suppose it could be ancient, directing the user to the Wayfinder wherever it might be. (Although perhaps one must be in the same ballpark, as 3PO still needs to get them to the right general spot.) One could imagine, if Ascendant V2 were the released film, hearing that in the visual dictionary the dagger was actually what was used to kill her parents. And this change helps the emphasis the film puts on Rey sensing darkness with the dagger lend itself to helping with the change about speaking to the user with spiritual whispers rather than a technical compass instrument.

I’d like to see a two-film version be pulled off seamlessly. Where are you breaking things up between them?

If I understand what you’re asking for, I’d just splice in the opening shots from the official releases and then return to my edits after the opening shot containing the crawl is over.

Not anything super new, it’s just… still kaput from earlier.

No, or at least not unless something changes on MR’s end. His computer is kaput and he expressed a desire to retain a few things for his own fan edit. And while that moment is cool and insanely well done, it doesn’t bear in any of the other changes and is okay not to get.

Thanks for the kind words, but I don’t think I’ll do that. However, because I have lossless ProRes video and AIFF audio outputs now available for all my SW edits it’d be a relatively straightforward exercise for someone to splice in the original versions of the opening shots of the three movies.

For that matter, stormtroopers now have a history of chattering and never coming anywhere close to slowing down.

And yes, the milky eyes and crackly saber are the two remaining pieces. And at absolute best it’ll be a matter of several weeks for the latter. Patience.

Imply that Palpatine possessed Kylo Ren during the opening of TROS by dubbing over in his voice and removing Palpatine from the rest of the film.

Oh, I wasn’t trying to be self-deprecating with my “diet” comment! On the contrary, I’m pleased to have projects I’ve overseen go on to greater things! (Even if I prefer the diet version personally.)

And I think what’ll be best for V2 of Ascendant for Palpatine is what we’ve already done, just working out a few of the kinks of the plot mechanics without radically altering them. But I reiterate, I would genuinely like to see these ideas be developed in the main TROS ideas thread and coalesce into something.

Okay so let me make sure I understand the practical things that would need to be changed in order to realize this idea.

Opening scene on Exegol, cut Palpatine’s specific request. Maybe just go from “It will be yours if you do as I ask.” To “End the Jedi, and become what your grandfather could not… but beware, she is not who you think she is (meaning the Jedi).” I think the opening scene would need to mention Rey in specific or else have a good way to end on a compelling note that doesn’t feel abrupt. (Not sure “…if you do as I ask… you will be the new emperor” and then Kylo lowering his saber would cut it.)

I do like this idea and feel it’d have been much preferable to the theatrical, but I think to realistically get at it we’d have to essentially let the theatrical alone. In other words I don’t think it’d work to imply Kylo has mysterious orders from Palpatine.

If the key ingredient of the idea is Palpatine knowingly trying to drain the dyad, I don’t think the footage is there to establish what’s happening, as he holds his hands up in surprise to exposit what’s happening.

Again, I do like this idea and wish it could be fully realized without seams. But by this point my TFA edit is a diet version of Nev’s Starlight, and my TLJ edit is a diet version of poppasketti’s Rekindled, so I wonder what this edit will end up a diet version of??

Wouldn’t have thought it possible to improve upon, but this makes it truly seamless.

I guess since Qui-Gon was the first Jedi to discover the ability (and I don’t even know if that’s canon, I’m just taking ROTS at face value) it wouldn’t be in the books Rey stole.
