Just so that everyone knows, version 2.1 (the final version) of these fan edits are now available at a certain pirate-themed downloadsite.
These final versions put each film on one DL-DVD. Also available is a set of smaller, 1.5 GB MP4 versions.
Is there somewhere "free" where one could download these?

Just had a few thoughts about the workprint for you.
I think it's important that you not remove the scene where Gandalf tells Frodo about Gollum. The thing about pity is a driving force for how Frodo treats Gollum.
I know you don't want to, but I second the idea of going right from Balin's tomb to the bridge without the fight scene. It's a good way to knock off a few minutes that don't further the plot, especially since there's no mithril anyway.
The prologue has too much backstory to be safely removed, but perhaps you could begin the film with Gandalf's arrival at the Shire, and put bits and pieces of the prologue where they'd go. (The Last Alliance battle when Gandalf reads up on Isildur, etc.)
Unrelated to any ulterior "purist" motives, cutting the elves from Helm's Deep offers another way to shave off some precious minutes. Their presence in the film was a necessity from the semi-cancelled involvement of Arwen and Elrond in the battle. You could cut the battle for Helm's Deep altogether and really save some time. Rohan could go from Theoden regaining his right mind into the scenes after the battle is over, leaving the Ents to take care of Saruman.
All three edits are finally up in DVD and mp4 form on the bittorrent world.

Seeding a torrent is one thing, since it's flexible and dynamic.
But on my network, with family who use it constantly, it's near impossible to get these DVDs up on Rapidshare (or file sharing site X).
If anyone would be willing to upload these DVDs in 100 MB archived chunks on Rapidshare for me (and send me the URLs), I'll send you a copy of the three movies (six discs).

Version 2.0 of these fan edits are now available on ThePirateBay and other common torrent sites, in DVD and MP4 editions.
I think these are much better, and have been created from scratch all over again. Kerr has been helping me, and so has the Phil behind the first "book cuts." Both have given great ideas and have collaborated with me to produce these edits.
They will also be up on rapidshare (compliant with jDownloader) and on fanedit.org soon!

I think the answer is tied to the nature of the thing in question: is the embryo a human being, or not?
If it is something less than human, then preference can dictate what happens to it.
If, however, it is indeed a human being, abortion would be unthinkable.
About updating screens and displays inside ships, I bet there are tons of video game clips that could be used there.
No, color correction is beyond my scope of ability.
Although if anyone wanted to, I wouldn't mind taking this edit and just doing some color work to it.
The torrents are there, but sadly I won't really be able to start seeding at any kind of serious rate until a few days when I can dump the data onto a computer in a different place.
In conjunction with Phil, the original fan editor behind the rare book cuts, I’m happy to finally be able to publish these revamped book cuts for your consideration.
We re-cut the film as close as we wanted it… to the book… obviously we couldn’t have ALL of the stuff from the book because we would need extra footage.
The film begins, not by a prologue but with Bilbo writing his book… it all happens in sequence until when Gandalf trots to Minas Tirith and looks at the old scrolls… then we see an un-cut and un-narrated LAST ALLIANCE battle.
Removed a few of Merry and Pippin’s Jar Jar moments.
It goes in order but there are no Gandalf/Saruman sub-plot intercuts… so now we, the audience don’t know what happened to him!
The film keeps going and we stop right at when the Ringwraiths meet their (temporary) doom at the ford of Bruinen. (Phil’s voice can be heard added to this scene.)
Disc 2 is inserted, and we fade in with Gandalf sitting near Frodo’s bed. When Frodo asks him what happened, Gandalf recalls the FULL and UNCUT sub-plot of the Saruman "incident,” minus the line about Sauron not being able to take physical shape.
A few chunks of the prologue are dispersed throughout the film, such as Isildur’s fate and some Gollum content.
Obliterated the lame self-doubt of Aragorn. (No telling Legolas to sit down at the Council, no protesting Elrond and Arwen’s encouragement, etc.)
We also tried to make Saruman a little less “central” as a villian… like in the books. So, you won’t be hearing
Gandalf say “It’s Sarumaaaan!” at Caradrhas for example. Nor, will you see alot of Uruk-Hai suiting up and stuff that takes place in Saruman’s shack.
Moria sees a shortened plight on the crumbling staircase, and the fellowship don’t see/notice any dwarf corpses until Balin’s tomb. So the Watcher’s attack is more of a surprise… sort of.
The theatrical version of the approach on Lothlórien is used in order to remove the out of place scene from the extended edition.
Galadriel does not tell Frodo someone inside the fellowship will try to take the ring, nor talks to Aragorn about his self-doubt.
When they boat through the Anduin there is no “Isengard theme music video” with intercuts with the Fellowship and the Uruk-Hai.
The extended night scene with Boromir, Aragorn, Frodo, and Gollum… We removed the quarrel between Boromir and Aragorn. Because Aragorn is too much of a self-doubting nut and the book doesn’t reveal such bitterness toward Boromir or Gondor on his part.
And we do not see Boromir die… he blows his horn once and the trio run for his aid and we CUT to Frodo with the ring.
The film ends that way… without intercutting with Aragorn and company… that, we will see in our revamped TTT cut!
Disc 1 can fit onto a single-layered DVD, but disc 2 needs to either be burned to a dual-layered disc or compressed.

Sounds like a great idea for a set of fan edits. Maybe not in every little detail, but I like the idea of an isolated "trilogy" set. Even just removing the "Episode X" from the title crawls would be enough for a barebones approach.

Do you mean color enhancement? No, I'm just using Womble for editing. So it's just trimming and re-cutting unconditioned footage.
We just need a few more things and then the book cuts can come out.

I was planning on doing something like this anyway, if I can figure out how to rip Adywan's AVCHD versions to mpeg.
To end up with a "diet Revisited" that removes any of Adywan's changes that I don't love. (Respectfully!)

The Paths of the Dead I agree with you about, but the Orc armor will stay because it is something straight out of the book.
