Glad to hear it. That’s pretty cool, really, when you think about all the changes that made their way into the project. It’s quite a twisted textual history, as if it were an ancient textual tradition being researched.
No, don’t do that. You can speak your mind!
Back in 2006, I edited the DVD version of the pod race to music, and this became the template that I closely followed for COD. I used that portion of the deleted scene, and so I had to use it again to recreate my prior work.
Humorous comparison between Rey and Luke: https://youtu.be/PE2at2Wo9sU
TPM: A Naboo street cleaner power washes the streamers and confetti away in a dry, boring way, while Jar Jar fumbles around in the background.
AOTC: The now disorganized droid factory keeps churning out battle droid heads that pile up and pile up off to the side.
ROTS: Clonetrooper using a dustbin to sweep up limbs and organs from the Jedi Temple floors.
ANH: On Dagobah inside his hut, Yoda stares out the window for a few seconds while a pot of stew simmers. He mutters unintelligibly for a moment before stirring his stew.
ESB: With the top down, Wilrow Hood flies along the underside of Cloud City in a speeder, ice cream maker in the passenger seat. A hand bounces off his head as it continues to fall.
ROTJ: Nighttime on Endor. A surviving stormtrooper sits behind a large tree holding his legs. He hears something, snapping his head to face the sound. Several ewoks descend on him and tear him apart.
TFA: In his medical capsule, Finn begins to stir. The lady doctor notices from her seat, and gets up. She holds a gas mask to his face, and presses a button. Finn slinks back to motionlessness as she says, “Not yet, you don’t.”
First off, thanks for the kind words about the edit. I’m glad you enjoyed them.
I think the lines, “You’ll always be that little boy I met on Tatooine,” “Don’t try to grow up too fast,” and, “But I am grown up…” form a nice little Act 1 arc for the romance plot. (You can thank Slumberland for that.)
EDIT: Well, I suppose those lines are all there originally! But, Slumberland crafted his edit so that overcoming that obstacle in Padme’s mind, that Anakin is just a little kid, was the prime task of the romance plot at that point.
All right, I think this is what remains to be implemented in my editing timeline, aside from things that are still just ideas at this point:
Sir Ridley’s crawl,
Maaaaybe trimming out Finn being wrangled by a rathtar tentacle and Mary Sue coming to the rescue (undecided),
Adding the ‘Leia and the Resistance’ deleted scene if it can be spruced up and work well (uncertain at this point),
And NeverarGreat’s soundtrack reconstruction surrounding the final destruction of SKB.
I don’t think it’s seamless, I’ll say that. At the screenplay level, I’d agree it sounds like a good idea. But I don’t think it’s a good idea for this edit. There aren’t good transitions available between these scenes.
No, I haven’t. I’ve been really busy lately, and haven’t afforded the edit a lot of time or thought. But I do plan to try the Resistance and Starkiller bases restructuring and see how well it works.
Sebastian Shaw as the ghost of Anakin is correct to me because it validates his redemption. He does not revert to a younger self because he has been redeemed and dies as Anakin Skywalker, not Darth Vader.
With the possible exception of adding Vader’s “Noooo” to ROTJ, and an honorable mention to Jedi Rocks, this change is the biggest example of a lack of perspective on Lucas’ part when returning to his films from decades prior.
The 1997 SE indeed contains both Klaxons. The mono version is more prominent during the first shot onboard the Tantive, with the more familiar taking prominence after that.
I like the “semi-specialized” concept, but don’t think colour is your thing.
Ouch.
(speaking of discontinuity issues, anyone that ends up dispensing with the ‘Chewie/Nurse’ scene also gets rid of the fact that she is suddenly holding the gadget in her other hand)
You hurt the Chewie/Doctor scene, you’ve gotta deal with me! 😛
Great bit of restructuring, and I don’t see how Snap poses a problem. And I would not allow Leia’s hairstyle to prevent using the scene.
Well, let me just say that you are really testing my resolve and dedication to V4.2 of my edits being final. 😉
That crawl is absolutely wonderful.
Wow. Agreed! It makes me regret having just published revised prequel edits featuring new crawls that can’t touch what you just posted!
Dubbing in new dialogue and lip syncing Leia might turn out to be pie in the sky, and it isn’t crucial to the edit if we don’t end up cobbling anything together.
And, Ridley, that looks great! I’m already able to render my own crawls, using JackPumpkinHead’s Blender template that mimics Adywan’s crawls. I just had to tweak the timing. BUT, if you wanted to render a version of yours, it couldn’t hurt for me to compare them and decide if either of them edges the other out. It’s up to you, though.
Sure, I can render a clip! I takes a while, so it might be better to save it for later in case you decide to change the text again. But I might render it anyway, I’ll link it here if I do.
I think technically my version looks a bit closer to the original one (after all, they used After Effects for the TFA crawl). I closely matched things such as the blur on the text in the distance.

I changed the font of the title to match the crawls of VI and I-III but I might change it back to the original again (IV, V, VII) as they will probably keep that one going forward.
Haha, gorgeous. Yes, I would love to have you render out yours, even after tinkering with mine for so long. When someone with power tools offers to help, put down your hand tools. I would, however, request using the same font for the title as the theatrical version of TFA.
However, I think that it would help the narrative if it is shown that the Resistance is actually trying to warn the Republic and hopes to get their help. That would be possible by inserting the deleted scene in a similar fashion to what NeverarGreat proposed and possibly by using a suggestion I made before that has someone asking if the Republic will send help during the briefing scene. If the proper audio could be found, we could use the cut shot of Leia right before 3PO’s line about the Republic fleet to have her answer that question with “No.” or “No, they won’t.” Then we’d only need to get a shot where we could have someone ask “Will the Republic send help?”. I’d place the added lines right before Poe says: “We’ll go in there…”
That’s… a very not bad idea. Good call with the cut shot of Leia. I’ll hunt around for dialogue for Leia, if people would like to send clips of themselves yelling out, “Will the Republic send the fleet to help?” Or something like that.
My conception of this was that the Resistance doesn’t know who or what is being targeted. They just found out about another planet-destroying weapon, and rush to launch a pre-emptive strike. We know they’re targeting “The Republic,” but the Resistance doesn’t appear to know what they are going to do. (This is something I infer based on the structure of the edit, but it’s not necessary for the audience to infer it the same way as I have.) If we are able to use the deleted scene where Leia sends her envoy to the Senate, it would help sell the idea that they don’t know it’s that system that will be destroyed. I don’t think construing the Resistance as believing they are the target would work well onscreen. Targeting the Resistance after destroying Hosnian Prime might work in theory, but I don’t know how we’d do that.
I could trim the trench run slightly, removing lines, “I need some help, here, I need some help,” and, “Comin’ in,” along with an establishing shot of a stationary gun.
The final version, V4.2 was released recently. Please ensure you are working on that version, as older ones have been let go.
If you need further help, PM me please.
If we go with this change of NeverarGreat’s, it will make it more important for the crawl to allude to a weapon in some way. Here’s a proposed re-re-re-re-re-re-re-revision to include a short mention.
Episode VII
THE FORCE AWAKENS
Luke Skywalker has vanished. In his absence, the sinister FIRST ORDER has risen from the ashes of the fallen Empire, plotting its return to power.
Failing to convince the New Republic to combat this emerging threat, General Leia Organa mobilizes a covert RESISTANCE while the First Order completes its devastating new weapon.
Desperate for her brother’s help, Leia has sent her most trusted pilot on a daring mission to Jakku, where a clue has been discovered to Luke’s whereabouts…
Looking (and sounding) pretty good. 😃
Head canon: He was a different guy named Wedge, and he decided to abandon the rebellion between the briefing and the launch of the attack.
Posted where?
I agree about not using Hosnian Prime as the location of SKB.
In theory, it would be a good thing to have Poe say something in that moment to the effect of, "Finn here worked on their base!"
As with any of these ideas, unfortunately, it comes down to deciding whether it can be done convincingly. We’ll have to see, but could you post a link to the most recent version you got?
On the contrary. After V1, I was sitting around hoping for other people to improve upon it.
Now there’s an idea to toss around. I may not get the chance until the weekend but I’ll see how that does pacing-wise for sure.
