TFA: A Gentle Restructure (Released)

As we look to Ridley retiming additional shots that had to be slowed down using his technological alchemy, we should take a look at the Starkiller explosion scene. Any shots between, “It is time to complete his training” and the shot of the Falcon and X-wings where they formerly jumped to lightspeed are potentially slowed down very slightly. NeverarGreat carefully matched the necessary length of the music track.

EDIT: I posted this comment before seeing ChainsawAsh’s. Thanks for the feedback, it’s very nice to hear that this is being enjoyed. I’m real proud of the final product, and really will be once we get it produced. 😉
Let us know what your family thinks of it. Especially if there are any strong fans of TFA whom are very familiar with it.

The 720p is available in the same places. Due to a hard time crunch on my end for today it is missing 5.1 audio and subtitles.
I’m also not doing a DVD version for V2.

However, all these wrongs will be righted in V2.1 once time is back on our side. 😃
I’m hoping we can finish that by the end of the year. That would be wonderful for me and my stress level, and I don’t see why we couldn’t.

I just watched the original TFA with my 60-year old father (because I haven’t made Finnish subtitles for Restructured yet). After the movie I showed him why this edit was made. He agreed that we will be watching Restructured from now on because it seems to make a bit more sense, haha! I also pointed out to him that Leia ignores Chewie when they return from SKB and he got a little pissed after realizing it (read: cannot unsee). 😄

Awesome. And, again, my hope for this project is to preserve the experience of TFA as much as possible while making this single (or two or three) alterations. I will join you in hating that, though!
And if you end up doing Finnish subtitles, let me know and I’d be happy to include them for V2.1.

My only quirks with it that I felt could use a couple changes…

Some of the dialogue is a little quiet with the new music additions. Specifically, I only found two places this was the case:

  1. When Han says, “Where’d you get that?” in Maz’s castle when she hands out the lightsaber.
  2. In the new Snoke scene after Han’s death when he says, “Prepare the weapon.”

Maybe just duck the music down slightly? Other than that, I think this seemed great.

I think for the Maz scene it would have let the original music be audible. (I got the audio fully baked from Ridley, but I assumed that was the reason so I did not ask.)
I also got the Snoke audio from Ridley fully prepared, but I believe it would be too jarring to fade the audio in after that point rather than when it begins.

NeverarGreat, I will take a listen to the R2 scene at the end.

Oh, I won’t begin exporting V2.1 until after I’ve seen Episode 8 for certain, even if it were all ready to go.

And… we do see the Sun being drained completely as they are having their conversation, so I don’t think it’s a problem we don’t see the Resistance chiming in about it. I hear what you’re saying, but there’s no obvious solution and I think it’s okay.

Seems like the sort of thing that, if this version were what was released, I would not be surprised to hear, “We filmed a scene that was supposed to go here of the Resistance being worried, but we cut it because it detracted from the unhurried sequence between Solo and Kylo Ren.”

The 720p encode just finished aaaand… it’s unusable. And, to boot, the encoded DVD video stream just… isn’t anywhere to be found. I exported it to my Desktop as always, and it’s just… not there. I have no answer.

I’m going to reencode the 720p version using Apple’s Compressor in the hopes that it bypasses whatever is causing the problem, since V2.1 will be the permanent one before too long. Would anyone be devastated if I skipped a DVD release for V2.0, given that it would be Monday at the earliest before such a version became available?

Ah, gotcha. I thought you had a particular guy in mind that I was expected to pick up on. I might try recording lines anyway, channeling all those vaguely European sounding Imperial douchebags.

EDIT: Although I could go for: “Weapon reprimed to shoot them a second time.” (Imagine the most exaggerated stereotypical French accent possible, by John Cleese.)

Yourself? It’s early in the morning and I didn’t get much sleep. You’re gonna have to pretty much spell it out for me while I brew some coffee.

And I’m in favor of giving V2.1 the fast track so I can put it to rest well ahead of immanent major things I’m gonna need to be focused on. There’s only a small amount for us to do. Then… it’ll be a 30GB gem that’ll hold value for a long time. Thanks in advance.

Here’s what I’m working from at this point regarding a V2.1. (Of course for now I’m trying to get V2 distributed!)

Hyperspace ambience post-Jakku shouldn’t include cockpit whine since that’s not the part of the ship they’re on.

(Kylo Ren’s helmet appearing and vanishing during second Snoke scene.) If one of you pull this one off, I’d… Well, at this point I’d probably be surprised at how unsurprised I’d be.

3PO walking away sound effects - If anyone has some sound effects that would work that would be a big help. None I could find online didn’t seem hokey.

Recolored Leia deleted scene

(Make deleted scene audio just a little bit louder)

Ridley - match up each shot with the theatrical, retiming any that are necessary, from immediately after Han is shanked to Leia’s Force reaction.

Updated version of Starkiller shot as X-wings arrive - NeverarGreat

Maybe dub tech guy to tell Hux “weapon reprimed in 30 seconds” or “weapon fully recharged.” Can’t be myself; needs to sound vaguely European.

Seems like there will either be a V3 (if TLJ prompts any reconsiderations) or V2.1 (if only minor tweaks are called for). I’ll put off upgrading to High Sierra, as after that point I’ll no longer be able to work with all the things I’ve done using Final Cut Pro 7. With my life preparing to change soon, if V2.1 is the path to head down, I’ll want to expedite that. We’ll know for sure inside of a week, I guess.

NeverarGreat, if you wouldn’t mind, please send that Starkiller shot I apparently missed, and the Leia deleted scene recolored whenever you can.

Fair enough, you guys. 😃

What I mean is that after V1, I still didn’t feel like it was viable as a replacement for the original. It would’ve been an easy restructure at the script level or even reshoot level, but not fan edit level. You have proven me wrong.

I just watched the edit myself this evening with the wife. (I had to watch the crap quality version but that’s all right.) It really is amazing how the film works with what we’ve done to it. It makes the original feel off.

I don’t recall there being multiple versions of that shot. Not saying there weren’t! I can’t imagine it looking better.

The continuity issue during the second Snoke scene is indeed the highlighted remaining problem with the project, to be sure.

Yeah, I tried to add 3PO servo sounds to the first scene with R2, but I couldn’t seem to get it right, and I figure the audience is not focusing on him in that moment anyway.

Sunset regrade: My method for doing what I wanted to was to overlay footage from NeverarGreat and reduce transparency, to apply the effect only in part. This proved impossible, as the output had a great deal of noise. Since it was only a change I was going to make ‘because it was there’ and is not really relevant to the project’s goal, I left it out without another thought.

I see what you mean about the Leia deleted scene’s colors, though it doesn’t stand out to me. Though, those kinds of things generally don’t.

I had forgotten that there were some additional shots that were slowed slightly. I’d never had noticed, either.

Thanks for the feedback! I probably won’t do an updated version without a “big deal” coming along. But who knows? Maybe we’ll get one in a week or so. I’m thrilled with how V2 turned out, after I frankly regretted doing V1. You are all amazing.

I did a quick preview of it, at least viewing the first minute or so then at the credits. From those quick glances & listening the audio sounds good on the computer. The file size I have is 30.5 GB.

Just watched it and wow, that was amazing. It made TFA not into a masterpiece, but a really enjoyable movie! Thank you all so much for making this happen.

There are some (tiny) things that could be improved in a possible future version, but overall it’s really seamless. I don’t think I’d have noticed any edits if I hadn’t known about them. Honestly, I’m not even sure if I catched all.

So once again: Thank you very much.

“The edit. You’ve seen it.”

I am glad that those who have viewed this so far find no obvious, glaring problems. I’m sure the things you’d point out are things I’m aware of, too. It will never be perfect, but I am very, very pleased with how dramatically better you all have helped this V2 to become.

By the way, PCM is uncompressed audio. The audio track for that one was nearly 5GB!

The 720p encode failed, as I found when I returned home just now. It quit about a third of the way into the movie. I should have a less than 1GB version appearing in the same download location this evening, and hopefully a successful 720p encode of about 8GB ready to go sometime early tomorrow. But, as always, we’ll see.
