The ‘Custom Special Edition’ That Almost Wasn’t, But Then Was (Released)
Time

Also, let me draw your attention to the ‘ANH:SE Radical Redux’ thread, in which snooker is working on adding the hyperspace effects to the scene onboard the Falcon after they escape the Death Star. Right now, the standout issue seems to be making the hyperspace tunnel look right for the front-facing dialogue shot, without more than one or two known video sources.
Discussion begins about halfway down page 65:

I certainly don’t want to get into any efforts to tamper with that. I kept the full 2011 planet montage, using a patch of audio from the Tatooine portion to mask the “Wesa free” line which was in every channel.

Other than, y’know, having almost any of my final sources available, it’s as done as it can get. I might just put a workprint version on the Google Drive as a placeholder. The biggest thing missing is Ridley’s work with the Sarlacc (original version is used now). And I have only eyeballed the various 4K83 shots to get them to roughly match in order to produce a placeholder export.

For reference, here’s a cap of the only time ANH shows us a head-on hyperspace tunnel:

Anyone know how Adywan produced his version? His looks like this, granted, he replaced the earlier tunnel shot also:

I wonder what your version would look like, snooker, if the white center was shifted downward, even if it means zooming into the tunnel somewhat to make it fit, and maybe blurring it to compensate. I don’t know; it’s hard to say without having it in front of me to screw around with.

JEDIT: I will say, in ROTJ the center of the hyperspace tunnel appears as Adywan depicted it: toward the bottom of the window. It’s hard to show in a screenshot, but you can see it as they revert to realspace since the stars center toward the bottom of the cockpit window.

Exactly. His ‘repentance’ was enough. When he died, he was restored, not merely regressed.

I see you put “repentance” in quotes.

Err… yeah? I did that only because it’s a weird word to use for it but the best word for the task. Unless there’s some reference you’re making that flew over my head.

Yeah, that looks like what I’ll have to do for the ending: 2011 visuals (except the ghosts) and muting the gungan shout.
When I mocked up my original idea it went by too quickly since there wasn’t enough clean footage of Naboo available after the structure leaves the frame that is supposed to transition from Tatooine. I still don’t think Tatooine should be having an absolute riot like that, but it’s all right.

And a 4K97 would be awesome to have, but this project won’t need it. This isn’t a ‘desert island’ or ‘only copy you’ll ever need’ version.

I was thinking shudder added to the hyperspace backdrop, so it seems like less of a screensaver and more like something the ship is enduring traveling through. The camera doesn’t need to jostle or anything, because it’s presumably locked down to the interior of the falcon, and none of the characters or interior objects are rattling.

I agree about the contrast perhaps being a bit exaggerated in your preview clip.

What is your source for the background hyperspace element?

That’s wonderful. I wonder if the background for the behind the back shot could be changed without having to start over. Comparing it to similar shots in TFA, this one has a rather large and well defined white center. I suspect that shot will be somewhat strange in any event since it’s so sustained and calm. Perhaps some slight shuddering may help it.

If it’d be helpful, I’d be happy to generate appropriate audio for the scene. I mean, I’d have to anyway. 😛

That’d be going against the grain of the other two films and seems to put the cart before the horse. I’m not going for a restoration but a fixed up SE that is free to look somewhat digitized.

4K83 is awesome and I’m thrilled to have it when I want to watch the original version, which for ROTJ is very important, but it’s not gonna be my main source for this project.

JEDIT: Is 4K97 going to be a thing?

While ANH is coming together, I have also put together as complete of a workprint as I can for ROTJ.

NeverArGreat will be doing his best to get some 4K83 material to blend as closely as possible with the surrounding BluRay footage, and Ridley stepped forward to remove the Sarlacc beak. And, of course, I’ll be waiting on the primary source: Adywan’s color corrected ROTJ BluRay. I know my life will be even busier and so I’ve been hustling to get as much of this done and ready as possible.

ZandFlare92 PM’d me a good idea: using a wipe for the transition around the Jabba deleted scene, rather than the OOT’s crossfade. He pointed out to me that Adywan and KK650 each took this approach, which I was unaware of.

I’d already locked sync down for the project, but was able to massage things a little to get it to work well enough using a few things working together. I don’t want to point out what I did, but here’s a clip.

Also, I just listened to the commentary and have a question for Hal (and everyone else): When watching Rey tap into the Force and overpower Kylo at the end, do you interpret this as her using the Dark Side, or just harnessing the ‘light’ which has ‘always been there’? I ask this because if Rey were so susceptible to the Dark Side here, that might constitute a very great character flaw and go a long way towards making her a more dynamic lead.

BTW, thanks for the many shout outs in the commentary Hal, you’re really too kind!

V1 was mediocre at best and at that time I just hoped that someone would take the idea and run with it, so you and Ridley deserve all the credit I can give.

To answer your question, I do think Rey tapped into the dark side to come at Kylo so forcefully. I think that’s why the ground opens up between them, so that she has little choice but to flee, rather than being merciful.

Info: TLJ - Caretaker village sequence
Time

As I was preparing for TLJ: Legendary, I supposed that the reason for the caretakers’ existence was for that scene, and that I should either incorporate that scene or remove the caretakers altogether. I went with the latter because I agree with RJ’s commentary, to the effect that without this scene the last time Rey and Luke converse prior to their falling out has a suggestion that Luke might give in to her beckoning. When Luke is approaching her as she ‘touches hands’ with Kylo, it seems like he was just about to come over to her perspective.
