The ‘Custom Special Edition’ That Almost Wasn’t, But Then Was (Released)

I believe that could’ve been mine. Somehow I just cut out “Your father” and that alone somehow made it sound like “I wanted you to have this-“.

I like that a great deal! Did you have to adjust sync of the shot to do that? It doesn’t appear so. Could you perhaps send me audio?

Re: “your mother” - I tried to sort of tackle this in LOE.

Eh, it’s probably better not to alter the OT in that sort of way. I’ve got ESB fully ready to go, and I hope to begin distributing tomorrow. The picture looks better than I’ve seen Empire before, thanks to DrDre and Sir Ridley. I didn’t have a complete set of LUTs, and creatively mixed and matched them much of the time on a scene-by-scene (and occasionally shot-by-shot) basis, but I’m happy with the colors throughout. There are zero changes to the content, as this is merely remastering with a superior primary video source.

I seem to recall seeing a mockup at some point of the altered line in Ben’s hut that sounded perfect. Does anyone here know whose this was or where it can be found? None of the “I”s I’ve had time to try so far fit in very well.

To me, the movie only allows the reasonable inference that Ben is lying after the dramatic pause when Luke asks about how his father died. Before that point, the clear implication is that he’s telling him the truth which Owen has obscured.

  • Changing Obi-Wan’s line to “[I] wanted you to have this when you were old enough, but your uncle wouldn’t allow it.”

  • “…[a] Jedi Master who instructed me.”

Actually, I wonder how you all would feel about implementing these two specific alterations. Blasphemous? Acceptable within the frame of a ‘Special Edition’ for saga continuity? Irreconcilably opposed to me having bent over backwards to conform Ep3 to a few lines of dialogue from ROTJ? Okay to do only if relegated to a non-default audio track?

In the original scene the two final shots of Anakin are together, and the scene transitions from there. The shots of Padme had to be placed in the order they are in order to do what else needed to be done to end the scene.
I think it would feel a little abrupt to just eliminate the last shot, though. But, fair enough. I can take another look, but I doubt it’ll feel as smooth.

It’s similar to Cathy’s edit, but longer.

Over the establishing shot of the diner, we hear Dex say, “He-heyyyy, ooohh, buuuddddy.” We cut to the two of them sitting themselves down into the booth. Dex asks, “So, my friend, what can I do for you?” And the scene plays out unedited from there.

I like that it includes a line from Obi-Wan seeming to disparage droids. That dovetails with me removing him ever calling R2 by name in Ep3, to alleviate his apparent amnesia about R2 and 3PO in ANH.

Well, I was able to use some time this weekend to complete V6 of Ep2 in my timeline. I’m going to focus on getting my ESB ‘Custom SE’ out the door next, to make sure nothing groundbreaking emerges for this project until then. I’ll need to redo chapters, resync subtitles, and a few other things like that when I get back around to it.
Hopefully by then Angel will have been able to complete the two or three things he’s doing for LOE V6.

From the current discussion, I am probably more curious with Sir Ridley’s work on having Anakin’s lightsaber retract showing he has his lightsaber but is surrendering … that is the simplest and probably the better way to go.

Here’s the shot in context, if you’d like to take a look. We’re lucky to have Ridley around. 😃

I’m having a hard time picturing what you’re suggesting, nightstalkerpoet.

And while I am not going to put back in Nute Gunray calling for Padme’s head for the reasons I posted about earlier, I did just redo the musical transition and I think it’s at least slightly better than it was, all while reinstating Dooku using the number ‘ten thousand.’

An idea for shortening the droid factory scene…

Is the machine arm thing supposed to have hit Anakin so hard it broke a chunk of his lightsaber off? I’m not sure what’s going on; I don’t think it works.
