4K restoration on Star Wars

Anyone notice any 2004-2011 changes which did not make this 2019 version?

The disappearing Y-Wings, for one.

To settle whether things were redone from the original or the 1997 SE, someone could check the redone saber-bolt flashes as Luke trains with the seeker. There’s one shot in the 1997 SE and onward which incorrectly treated part of the background as part of the flash. If that is the case, it’s gotta be from the 1997 SE restoration. If not, it’s either not, or they fixed that SE error.

The Mandalorian - a general discussion thread - * SPOILERS *

I still regard anything other than films containing the word ‘Episode’ to be part of the ever-Expanding Universe, and have held such material to that standard across the dividing line of the Legends reboot.

As such, Rogue One and Solo have been EU novels in movie form. Same for this new show. It’s not Star Wars at its essence, as plenty of EU material takes a rather different tone or subject matter afield of Luke’s hero’s journey. This show is like a comic put to film, and an older styled one at that. Within that lens I don’t feel it makes sense for me to be very critical of it.

It seems like the prequels were sourced from the BluRay master but altered a bit from there, and the originals remastered from what the 2004 masters were sourced from but redone from there. 1997 changed are once again carried over, with anything subsequent being redone. A. couple of 2004 fixes seem to have been accidentally omitted, a few more have been done, and the previous 2004/2011 changes have been recreated (some more successfully than others). The originals have a far better color grade but have been processed to a greater degree that may not be desirable.

The ‘Custom Special Edition’ That Almost Wasn’t, But Then Was (Released)
Time

Taking a look at the surprise new presentations of the OT on Disney+, there’s only one thing that gets my attention for ANH and ESB.

My saga edits are and always will be mastered in BluRay-spec 1080p. The new 4K HDR aspect of the Disney+ presentation cannot carry over into anything I put out. Even if it could, I’m still dependent on DVD footage (for the PT), film scan-based footage and some GOUT (for the OT), and regular 1080p footage (for the ST), so I’m anchored somewhat by the lowest common denominator.

When boiled down to an apples to apples comparison to a decent color corrected BluRay starting place, the only thing to offer seems to be a couple of content changes or a few shots that the BluRay particularly botched. The standout for me seems to be Vader’s saber in ESB; it looks better than what I was able to do. We’ll see if I find it worth the trouble to revise once the community has digested the new presentation available, but for now it seems like ANH and ESB can remain tentatively ‘final.’

The “new explosion” in the Greedo shootout seems to just be a shortened version of the old one.

There’s enough versions of that scene now to be able to queue up in random order and gamble on what’ll come up.

I felt some sympathy for Adywan as he works on his ROTJ grade. Good as a new source is to have, it can render much work already done moot. Not even sure whether to hope this is the case (for his well being) or not (for a better end result).

Disney+ streaming platform : Star Wars content & various other info

If not a new transfer, the grading has at least been radically altered from the DVD and BluRay. Han’s hair isn’t purple and the desert in ANH feels less saturated, the Death Star explosion is much more orangish, etc. Compared to the BluRay, this version looks more appealing.

That’s all the recon I can provide right now; the baby is fed and I’m going back to bed.
