^ I have a hard time imagining that the “we will always be with you” line would fit in well in that moment in the hut. But who knows, it’s hard to say sometimes before trying it. I don’t mind the line “You have everything you need.” It speaks to the wayfinder superficially, and confidence in Rey’s inner resources more substantially.

Besides, his final line in the film is still “The Force will be with you.”

Let’s see. I tried removing the line “I’m the spy” and personally found it sort of abrupt. The scene is pretty darn abrupt to begin with, and that’s a non-fan-editing-friendly aspect to the whole movie. It’s a dumb line, sure, but… I guess I feel it’s better to leave it in and prevent it from feeling super rushed. I don’t particularly care for Poe’s SNL response, but it was the same story. I could imagine the camera holding longer on Hux after he says “We don’t have much time” followed by a slight musical sting before cutting away. I dunno, perhaps stretching the shot might not be terrible. (Nevermind. Just checked and there are NO extra frames on that shot at all.)

I never had an issue with the Kijimi dialogue. MR did a good job with the scene for his purposes, but I don’t really care to remove the backstory to Poe that is communicated. And I’ve been talked out of removing the “Not that you care but I think you’re okay” line twice.

I assume that the continuity error is just that, and they perhaps hadn’t figured out what they wanted to do with the saber while filming. I suspect the real reason is that they wanted to make use of as much Leia footage as they had, and receiving and handing sabers is what they had. This doesn’t really bother me; it’s a technical error, but not a thematic one.

I think just “…for my grandchild to come home” and “I never wanted you dead, I wanted you here.”

Both of these are removed to make Palpatine’s machinations a little less convoluted or hard to follow. Irrespective of whatever justifications or explanations from subsequent material, the idea is to make his plan something like this:

He lures in Kylo Ren, enlisting his help to eliminate Rey. He threatens Kylo that if he ties to kill him he’ll possess him. Kylo does not kill Rey and comes to be redeemed into Ben Solo. Rey then comes to Exegol. Palpatine decides to prey upon Rey and tries to get her to willingly become a host for his spirit.

It makes… more sense than the theatrical at any rate. We are given no reason not to believe what Kylo and Rey come to understand, that Palpatine wanted to kill Rey as a child and eliminate her as a threat.

It is unclear to what degree this change reverts the story to an earlier version (sort of like Anakin in my ROTS edit) or creates a new sequence of thought. And honestly, I don’t think it really matters either way.

I can for you, since it’d be such a simple job.
Would you rather they be hard-coded? Since most people are going to watch via Google Drive, and there are no foreign language options anyway, I’d think that would be best.

If you can send me the relevant shots or scene, I can add subtitles for those two lines formatted like the OT or PT, whichever you like.

TCW doesn’t ever have subtitles for alien dialogue, does it? I imagine the closest thing to be faithful to would be the subtitles in TPM and AOTC.

I checked the official DVD, and the subtitles for that alien guy read:

“Everything has been arranged
precisely as you have requested…”

“most illustrious Count Dooku.”

and then

“I trust you will find
what you seek.”

In said DVD the subtitles play automatically but are not hardcoded. Dunno if you’d want to include them, but it does make clear that Dooku is scouting out an assassin.

To call up a not-totally-resolved idea from a little while ago, does it seem like there are any workable alternatives for the line “they sold you to protect you”?

It would need to be replaced with something that would still make sense in context of the scene, as its part of the flow of conversation. Without this specific line, it’s much easier to headcanon the retcon as her parents perhaps paying Unklar to watch Rey for a while. When they never returned he eventually stopped. Then, Kylo Ren gets Rey to “admit” to herself what she long suspected… they sold her to him rather than entrusting her to him and ditched her.

I know there’s Kylo dialogue from video games and stuff, but… any ideas? Maybe something like “They were trying… to protect you.” Or something.

Movies Remastered said:

End Saber Sparks are finished. I’m just tweaking the sound.

T minus 5 is also finished.

Crackling Saber is on hold as the effect in the cave scene took so much time to get right but I think I’ve sorted it but I’m currently moving studios so I’ve had to pack up all my computer stuff. I should be back on things by next week but I still have my phone to check here in the meantime.

No rush at all, man. Will continue to look forward to the awesome stuff.

The last ‘T minus 5’ clip I recall seeing had the angle of the starlines sort of janky given the angle of the shot. Has there been a revision since then? And at any rate to be certain, would you mind sending me the most recent (unless there was only ever the one version anyway)?

Here’s the current list of changes for V2:

Completed or nearly:

  • Make Kylo say “we’ve become a dyad in the Force” (sherlockpotter)
  • Depict the Ach-To scene as taking place largely pre-sunrise (NeverArGreat - nearly finalized)
  • Adjust Leia with Han’s medal insert shot in terms of placement and lighting (sherlockpotter)
  • Remove Finn’s line “He wanted her alive.”
  • Remove Palpatine’s lines “I never wanted you dead, I wanted you here” and “…for my grandchild to come home.”
  • Add Vader’s Castle establishing shot to opening as well as add the castle to background in later shot (21C Peasant, Movies Remastered)
  • Due to popular demand, switch to Vader’s TIE for Kylo’s transport from the DSII (poppasketti)
  • Remove 3PO’s line “from the Southern shore.”
  • Gently restructure opening of final space battle (DominicCobb)
  • Remove Rey’s mother calling her by name

Outstanding:

  • Recolor the two lights on Rey’s yellow saber to blue and purple
  • Depict the blue saber as fizzling out at end of DSII duel (to come, from Movies Remastered)
  • Depict the two sabers as kaput after Exegol climax (to come, from Movies Remastered)
  • Replace the Pasaana puppet show with visuals referencing Luke on Crait (being worked on by poppasketti, Movies Remastered, Rogue Leader, and/or snooker)
  • Move Poe’s line “T minus 5” to before exiting hyperspace (possibly, if Movies Remastered can improve it, otherwise not)
  • Depict Rey’s blue saber with a crackly visual effect (being worked on, will include work from kewlfish, Luka Frik, and Movies Remastered)
  • Cut Luke’s hair (to come, from jonh or whomever wishes to correct issues with existing clip)

Nev delivered another update, and I think it makes a definite improvement to those couple shots. Here it is fully implemented. If you ask me I think this scene looks pretty good now! Once we get the haircut I think we’ll be in business.

Two quick thoughts on the fist half of S01E00:

When Dooku arrives and enters the arena, a few subtitled lines are missing. Not sure if deliberate, and if so fair enough.

It might be good to go ahead and allow a fade to black and fade back in after Sidious comments after sending Ventress on her first mission.

So far it seems to be a pretty good sequence of things!

If the consensus is to go with blue and purple for the two lights, so be it! I think that’s fine and has a logic to it.

I’m not going to rescore the X-wing lifting. And I get why they used Luke and Leia’s theme for Lando and Jannah. It’s John Williams’ way to let us know they might (or may as well) have a family connection. To me it’s the only thing in the film that steers me away from “lol wtf smoothie Lando is hitting on this 19 year old.”

^ Yes, I just meant that the saber shouldn’t appear to totally break for good during the DSII duel. I think a subtler approach should do the trick: Rey noticed it fizzling as she looks down at it, another shot from above of it, and she cowers as the saber is out of frame. Viola!

Also, it need only be a nod to the audience without having an in-universe correlate about the color of the two lights on Rey’s yellow saber. She knows the myth of Luke Skywalker anyway, so I think green and purple is the best Luke-Leia homage possible. I imagine it’s slightly better thematically that she buries the broken sabers of the past and builds her own anew anyway.

If it’s hard to remove the blade entirely, perhaps it can flicker or something like that, implying it went out or at least became unreliable such that she cowers before Kylo’s lifted blade in that one shot where her saber isn’t visible anyway. It shouldn’t be too much, as we don’t want to imply too strongly that the saber is totally shot or anything.

Oh, and that’s a genius idea to make the little lights green and purple in the end scene. (It even makes a tad more sense that purple and green would add up to a yellow hue.) Who’s up for it? lol
