The way it’s currently implemented in the Vimeo seems fine to me. But it seems just as fine without it. I really don’t care either way, which perhaps is all the more reason not to use it.

The fact that these dialogue things are in question now highlights the madness we’re currently in!

I think the scene is perfectly fine the way it is originally. I’m sorry for jerking everyone around, and I know I’m not the most decisive leader. Let’s section off this scene, mark it complete aside from the specific Vimeo change with the poll, and move further discussion to the general TROS ideas thread.

To be clear, I’ll abide by the poll results, but it’s between the original scene and the way it is in the clip with the single added line.

JEDIT: Can anyone confirm they voted YES but dislike the clip? If so, the poll isn’t clear and invalid.

Yeah, it’s okay to bring up new ideas in the general TROS thread. I do read that one too and can pull in anything that seems like a good fit. There is often a lot to keep track of.
Let’s not add the Luke line to the hut scene.

I think we’re all getting antsy here, and this is a legit maddening kind of a project to tackle at all. The final product will inevitably include things one person would’ve preferred to leave out and exclude things they’d have liked to see. My hope is that the edit reads as an improvement without anything changed that doesn’t work easily on a single viewing.

Star Wars is a fairy tale story, and one of the hallmarks is taking figurative things and making them fairly literal. I complain about TROS seeming to lose nuance, but at its core that’s sort of how these things go. Maybe I’m hypocritical on this point at times. I just don’t want to feel dumb, which is subjective. Maybe that’s why I’ve always preferred crafted stories to gaming, video or otherwise.

I hear both the ‘thousand generations’ and ‘you have everything you need’ as figurative and substantial beyond their technical plot meanings.

Also, here’s how the added line would sound, fully implemented as nicely as I could get it. I used reversed footage for the Rey shot, but ideally interpolated frames would help further. Again, this change merits an extreme “meh” from me, but I mocked it up and we’ll see what you guys think:

Not to unnecessarily derail this thread, but a few pages back people brought up Rey’s narration in the cave in TLJ, and I’ve seen this complained about elsewhere as an example of ‘telling not showing’. The thing is, she’s not just narrating it for the audiences sake; she’s describing the experience to Ben, right? I think you’re supposed to wonder “why is there narration in my Star Wars movie!?” and then it’s a little twist when it cuts to Rey in the hut Force Skyping Ben. I think if you cut all that narration out, it’d feel quite abrupt to cut to the hut and have her suddenly start talking, and you lose that immediate realisation/understanding that she’d been sharing her emotions with Ben.

Not to derail it further, but I agree with you.

I think “a thousand generations live in you” works far better as setup for Rey hearing the voices of past Jedi, having them “stand behind” her (as Qui-Gon says), and Rey saying she’s “all the Jedi”.

Yeah. I will mock the new line up and put it into as good a shape as possible and we can just see what works better. But unless it’s a pretty good fit, I will lean toward leaving it as is.

So the key is matching Luke’s mouth movement with “you”. Really sells the transition of shots. Unfortunately, you have to remove a portion of the overall shot in order to include the line.

NOTE: There is an audio pop and sudden music transition. Ignore that, this is just a proof of concept.

Seems just a little wrong to have the camera move a tiny bit before settling on Luke. It’d probably be better to keep more or the shot or lose more of it.
Could you send me the raw line itself? I can try mocking this up as well to see how it plays in practice and decide yay or neigh. (Both of those were spelled wrong on purpose)
