I remember in the thrasher seeing ROTS and thinking toward the end, “Well, there goes Droids.”
All right, that makes sense when you lay it out like that. That’s the sort of subtlety I would hate to remove for no reason, even if it’s muddy as presented. The whole movie is a series of things happening quickly that you’re following along with practically jogging.
I’m like 99% sure that Carrie was having a hilarious time during the recording session for her lines on that game and it does show through. There are some death sounds in here that are just so funny.
I’m just willing to overlook it and also rationalize it as Leia not understanding that Rey wasn’t in a good mood at first. Thus the tone shift.

Well hey, I see what you mean. Earlier I read into it more subtlety than it really seems it has. Merely removing “for just minutes” could indeed streamline things. They don’t follow up on this really, unless it’s when Poe says “this is our last chance we gotta hit those cannons now!”
What’s he mean by “just minutes”? That after that the ships will be oriented again?
Rey, a few minutes into an intense Force vision after reaching for Anakin’s lightsaber, wanders a wintry landscape in apprehension. A voice beckons her.
“Hello there, Rey. I’m Obi-Wan Kenobi, a Jedi Knight. Don’t be afraid! You must learn the ways of the Force.”
Two films later, after Palpatine fucking EXPLODES, a familiar voice congratulates her.
“You see? You can do it.”
Wonderful idea and I really want it to work, though it doesn’t quite.

When the not-Jawa is shoo’d away by Rey from ensnaring BB8, Rey tells the droid that he “wants you for pot.”
If someone wants to do it, grey robes could be pretty cool.
And I’ll probably be pretty picky about extra Leia lines, but let’s see what sticks!
@Hal 9000 The scavenger clothing is part of who Rey is, why would we want to take that away?
It feels like a regression to me. She changed her look once she moved forward from her Jakku days, and she appeared more grown up with that look. She looks younger with her hair and clothing this way, although that’s subjective.
They were working with scraps for Leia, and much more than we have. I am open to mock-ups but I don’t imagine most of these being improvements. I’ve been wrong before and it doesn’t hurt to try and see.
About the end scene, black would make sense for a funeral but it still feels like it signals the wrong thing. I agree grey might be nice, but it’s still the same outfit and I feel it’d be obvious it was merely recolored. I’d really like to see a return to what she wore at the end of TFA and most of TLJ, really. Or just something new. I imagine they had her revert to her scavenging looks in order to fit with footage of hugging Carrie from TFA. I really think that’s most of the reason why.

Eh, I don’t really want to trim Leia any further. Nor to revise the nav tower plot element. It’s not great, but I’d rather keep the fragile nuances in place to the degree they are in the theatrical.
I know it’d take far too much work to actually change her wardrobe throughout the movie. It would be much more doable to merely tackle the ending scene. However, it really wouldn’t make sense to give her dark clothing there. If anything, I’d expect this to be her final goodbye to the old ways before changing her outfit as she ventures out into her new journey. I guess it’s a “could, but probably shouldn’t” thing.
Hey, Hal. I just noticed something about your current version of this edit. None of the additions/changes made in the 2011 Blu-ray are present. Did you use a HDTV source for this current version of Episode III? If so, I was wondering why you went with it? Better coloring?
Yeah, it seemed to me to be a slightly more integrated look, given that several scenes were sourced from the DVD. It mattered less for ROTS than AOTC, but it still felt like the right choice. I used Schorman’s V2 of the HDTV version. The only thing I think that would’ve been good to include from 2011 was the moss on the Kashyyk hut, but even then, who cares? I definitely didn’t want to use any of the audio changes made.
^ Ah, I gotcha now, Test. Well, I still think it’s a pretty weak arc and it feels right to remove his felt need to express it to her. I’d probably feel differently if the film ever made it a little clearer what it was.
Finn’s BPD symptoms subside a little for at least the rest of the day. That’s his big arc in the movie.
Anyway, I don’t want to strip his Force sensitivity from the movie and I’m not really sure what more to say about it.
Since we’ve moved the holochess scene to the end, maybe we could give Finn a Padawan braid? Lol. I feel like Finn could pull that look off.

After Rey shoots lightning and we close up on her hand, a gouge on her wrist reveals wires and circuits underneath.
Reintroducing Palpatine in song would certainly be an improvement from “The dead speak!”
The navigation tower makes a certain amount of sense. I think if the changes you suggest were made, it may as well become the self-destruct button. The way it is here, they’re buying a window of time in which to open vulnerability to the fleet. It’s unclear whether other ships than the lead could take over that role. By simplifying this aspect of the plot even more I think it would make it feel dumber rather than less dumb.
It’s not my intention to remove Finn’s Force sensitivity altogether, just the awkward “OMG RAY I NEVER TOLD Y—“. He still has his conversation with Jannah, senses the nav tower change, and senses Rey’s death. There are more hints besides, and hopefully we get stories to come that capitalize on them.
I wouldn’t mind changing the line to “I will earn your family(‘s) saber,” and I think “the birth of her son at the end of her Jedi path” might work. Dunno if either are feasible with what we have at our disposal.
Darkening the color of the saber burial cloth is a good idea, I’m glad you brought that up again. I don’t know about Rey’s clothes though; it’d make more sense to me to have her wear black until that scene instead.
I’d give it to drgraham and his idea to change each ghost’s color to match their lightsabers. I could imagine some YouTuber out there spending time doing that in earnest.
Add Yoda’s ghost behind Luke’s. Without his realizing, Yoda lifts the X-Wing once again.
