That’s ok! After downloading a Subtitle editor, which by the way,
couldn’t change the default flag. I got all absorbed with what I ELSE
I do with subtitles! Wow, that’s a deep “Rabbit-Hole”.
I begin to understand your interest better!
I made some formatting changes that could not be saved as .srt
and .MP4 won’t accept .SSA files, so…
I’m back to .MKV, while not fully supported by Windows (why?) it is a
MUCH more versatile format, while MP4 can only have one audio track
and one subtitle track, the subtitle can only be added during encoding.
Muxing extra tracks into a .MKV is easy!

Now I’m wanting to back and re-do a film I subtitled last night,
but THAT encode took 6 hours! I guess that will be a .MKV too! 😉

I thought you may be the best one to ask:
Is there anyway, maybe a program or something to change a subtitle
in a .MP4 container to default without re-encoding?

I am adding some subtitles to a few films and encoding as .MP4,
while I check the “default” box before I start, the end product
HAS the subtitles but they must be selected.
I’ve seen films were this is not the case, so I know it’s possible.

I know this off-topic, but others here dealing subs might find your
answer useful.

First off, thank you so much for your continued work on this project, I LOVE it!
I’m am one of those who would have loved to see George release a high quality,
remastered, Blue-Ray of the original trilogy, not the garbage we got.
This is the closest I’ve seen to that dream being realized!

I downloaded my copies using Resilio links from that “other” Star Wars Forum with the
intention of uploading them to “My Spleen”, but another member beat me to it.
For which I’m grateful as uploading would have been time consuming!

Both versions are now seeded well on both and I’m sure any future corrected
version 3.1 ect… will be treated the same.

I’d also like to add that your earlier versions are available on “The Pirate Bay”
and have been seeded well for years.
Would you prefer that your work not be uploaded to sites like that?

I reinstalled the latest version of VLC (again) and there’s improvement.
Watching the film, it’s obvious that I’m not seeing full framerate, but it’s not a slide show ether.
Odd thing is, the only place it really freezes or stutters is during the crawl!

I normally ignore those update messages from VLC as they appear just when I’m about to watch something.
A couple days ago I let it update and saw during install a message that mentioned enhanced 4K support.
I thought ‘cool’, lets see if it helps playing 4K77, I had a error during the update and clicked ignore,
afterwards tested 4K77, this time it didn’t stutter, it wouldn’t play at all! I figured it was the error.
I downloaded & re-installed the latest version from file and had no errors, still 4K77 wouldn’t play,
and VLC crashed. So… I rolled back to my previous version, same issue AND no h265 file would play!
Today after a clean un-install I downloaded and installed VLC v3.0, everything is back to normal.
I think I’ll try the latest version one more time, but I don’t have high hopes.
I use PowerDVD 16 to play 4K77, and it works just fine!

I was just stating a opinion, though I DO believe that renaming a film, editing and altering in any way
IS just plain wrong. I’m one who did not grow up with the S.E., I was quite grown in '77 thank you.
In 1997 I bought the boxed set not knowing a thing about the changes and sat down with my children
to have a ‘Star Wars’ marathon, then suddenly it was like: “cover your eyes kids… don’t watch!”
Today I am so very grateful to folks like Harmy, TN-1, and Williarob for all their work to assure
that people like me ought never have to sit through one frame George’s evil ‘original vision’.
Also I think people who actually enjoy the changes should be able to continue to do so.
George Lucas wanted to make sure that we would have no choice in this, but today we do.

I doubt it, if they did it would no longer be a theatrical preservation.
To me, that was the first warning shot across the bow that Georgie was not
content and would alter the film further. Every time I see it I get a little angry.

1080 downscale from the first version of 4K77 I downloaded.

I think this is the final grade I’m going to use for my ‘Player Friendly’ DNR version,
Encoded to a x264 8 bit .mkv, just to create a copy that will play in most anything.

I guess I’ll hold off on downloading v10 and see what you come up with!
After 2 years what’s a few more days? LOL

I’m using your English native 1080p .sup file in these examples.

If encoded with the ‘black bars’ in a 16:9 aspect ratio I get this:

note: I’m still using ver. 9.2 here, still haven’t acquired your most recent version.

Edit: The above example were using Cyberlink PowerDVD 16, which I was using because
VLC is quite choppy playing 4K video but, VLC does display subtitles normally:

Hmmm… As soon as my current encode is complete I’ll try some tests using
1080p Sup files with a 4K Image, I’ve been wondering the same thing,
will it work? How will it look? I’ll post some images here.

In v3.0, the recomped shots will be restored using 35mm for sure. In v2.5, the number of Despecialized shots will be more or less the same as in v2.0 but those using GOUT heavily will be replaced with 35mm based ones.

Great clips! It’s very interesting to see the time, care & expertise that goes
into restoring just a few seconds of footage. I actually understood most of what
you were doing, but damn, you’ve got some cool toys! Worth the wait!

I want to have this downloaded though, it’s quite important. But I doubt I’ll ever watch it.

I actually did not expect much when I heard about the prequels coming out,
so I wasn’t surprised or very disappointed. Based on what Georgie was doing
to the Original Trilogy I expected a lot more of the same, he didn’t disappoint.

Well, I’m one who did prefer the ‘Matching’ English subtitles in my copies
of the films. What you are doing here looks good to me, I like the wider stroke
and the less bright look of the last few screens you’ve posted here.
Keep it up, and I’ll have to grab the latest version when you are done!
