Are you glad Lucas sold Lucasfilm to Disney or do you wish he hadn’t?
Time

I should have been clearer.

The Original Trilogy was not written, designed or made as being “always about the tragedy of Darth Vader”, as George later claimed what became his 6 main film Star Wars Saga story was about.

The reasons why, the details, or evidence, is in those threads. And in lots more on here.

Retcons, discrepancies, mental gymnastics, revisionism, making characters into liars to justify lack of coherent story, inconsistencies in the films (in the OT, the disconnects between the OT and PT, and in the PT), the need for Machete orders to keep plot to make sense or not be spoiled, and also Lucas’s many made up claims to try and justify the lack of cohesion, are all on such a scale that when watching the 6 films together it is not a coherent story.

To me anyway.

Ahsoka (live action series) - general discussion thread
Time

I found the first two episodes of Ahsoka to be okay. Some initial thoughts:

This isn’t Andor, either in quality of story execution via the plot and characters, or actual production values. But it is more on a level with S2&3 of the Mandalorian, BOBF, and Kenobi series.

Is this a spoiler thread? Just in case:

The crawl was cool, but was Ahsoka ever a Jedi Knight? I suppose was Kanan too, even considering he didn’t finish his training? And I do like the concept of Sabine being an almost non-Force wielding Jedi (or apprentice!)

“2D decisions” from ancillary characters which plague Mando, BoBF & Kenobi also occur here; the Rebel ship’s captain especially, the mundane and quizzical fight scenes early on, the “For the Empire” announcement of bad guys losing any element of surprise or urgency, and the “Engage self-destruct” announcement, instead of just doing it. Ugh. They don’t have much impact or resonance if they have no weight or realism. On the flip side, Shin and Sabine’s fight was engaging, well choreographed and good direction. But it looks like surviving lightsaber impalement to the stomach is a thing now. “Barely an inconvenience!”. Ahsoka’s fight with Maroc was well executed too, if a little predictable.

Chopper was great, Tennant too. I wish they didn’t use the “map McGuffins” yet again, a pity they didn’t use or think of something else, but it is only the first two setup episodes. Design wise they did look cool.

I agree with riocknroll41, sometimes acting and action scenes were a little wooden, slow and unengaging. Flat direction in places during the 1st episode, but much better in the 2nd. On the plus side the cinematography was good overall, ships looked superb, nice score and sound design, and the story was easy to follow, given these first episodes are basically set-up. There was a little too much forced exposition in places for my liking, and not enough in others (why is Sabine the one that can decipher the map? Other than Hera pushing them together?) But again, these are the setup episodes so it gets a pass.

Fans of Rebels will probably love this series, my friend who I watched these with loved it for the easter eggs and background moments. It is like a “Rebels season 5” so far. Given the usage of “time and space”, “this ancient map will help us find a guy who’s been missing for 5 years!” and likely WBW-to-come, he thinks Maroc will turn out to be Ezra. I doubt he will be, even for a Filoni show, but we shall see.

I will watch the next episodes, but I do hope they are better overall than these two were.

I was referring to Star Wars, both on-screen and his retconned and made-up claims off screen, as well as the lack of cohesive story of the 6 main films.

Stuff like this:

George Lucas: Star Wars Creator, Unreliable Narrator & Time Travelling Revisionist

Original Trilogy vs The Prequels: inconsistencies, retcons, plot holes and discrepancies

Original Trilogy vs later Star Wars: plot holes, inconsistencies, contradictions, disconnects, mental gymnastics, + stretches etc

and within the Original Trilogy itself.

Personally I consider the rematch of Dooku vs Obi-Wan and Anakin in RotS to be the best of the PT and my personal favourite. It was brief, simple and elegantly choreographed.

I thought the short duel between Qui-Gon and Maul on Tatooine was the best of the PT.

I had forgot about that duel. The one where Maul nearly kills young Anakin by running him over for no reason.

It felt like the duel closest resembling a lightsaber fight to the Original Trilogy to me.

The Acolyte has long been my low-key most anticipated SW project. Headland is a more interesting hire than those out of the Mandalorian factory; and likewise the time period is more interesting than ‘right next to the OT’

… granted. Expectations are still low, but Andor was solid stuff so these can work out occassionally.

I wish The Acolyte SW Celebration short was offically released.

It is a pity Disney or Lucasfilm think fans cannot tell the difference between two or more different series.

That they will not release much publicity for other series at all before Ahsoka is finished so not to “confuse” anyone, or to keep fan focus on the upcoming show?

It will be publicity for Skeleton Crew series after Ahsoka finishes? And then after, we may see some Acolyte content? A long time yet.

Not sure if this has been brought up before , but I noticed something watching my 1992 letterbox vhs of ROTJ this weekend …in the scene on the landing platform ,right after Luke says , " Then my father is truly dead ." , there are two stormtroopers within earshot of him . When they escort Luke back into the hold of the AT-AT , you can see one of the troopers turn his head and look at Luke ,probably thinking , " Holy Shit , Vader’s son !" I can only think of 2 plausible consequences of this …A. Vader has those troopers killed or B. Luke Jedi mind tricks them to forget the conversation ever took place .

Ha! I never thought of the scene like that. Yes, I think they both may have had an “accident” shortly after!

Will Disney eventually release every version of all Star Wars movies?
Time

jpb19 said:

Will Disney eventually release all versions of all 11 main Star Wars movies including the Holiday Special on Disney Plus? I would like to see the 1997 Star Wars movies on Disney Plus too. I am glad I have Star Wars 1997 Respecialized Edition. The original unaltered versions along with the theatrical version of episode 1 should be released too as well as the 1997 special editions. Puppet Yoda episode 1 should be preserved. The sequels probably do not need additional versions. Attack of the Clones has different versions. Revenge of the Sith does too. Empire Strikes Back 1997 depicts Luke screaming when he falls into the pit. I think it would be cool for Disney to release the 1997 versions again. I saw these versions when I was very young at the movie theater. It would be really cool if the unaltered versions of episodes 4 through 6 were released. I wish I could have seen the original theatrical versions of episodes 4 through 6 at the movies. I would rather have seen the original unaltered versions on the big screen than the 1997 versions.

I doubt this will be done anytime soon.

The Holiday Special as well!

Ahsoka (live action series) - general discussion thread
Time

The more I see of trailers and promos for the show the less interested I’ve become in it. I’ll still watch the opening 2 episodes, but not holding out much hope it will be much different from BoBF, Kenobi, and recent Mandalorian levels of quality and style.

The new bad guys appear more interesting than the already known characters from previous series.

I think I’m more interested in seeing Skeleton Crew and Acolyte.

General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread

I think one of the main reasons I enjoy the Visions animated series so much is that it often shows Jedi from an Original Trilogy depiction or point of view. Rather than the stunted, baffling, and poorly written Jedi we saw in the Prequels.

Last week saw Visions season 2 finally get official episode guides. Which is nice, but I have no idea why they took so long:

The less they release, the more they will be losing due piracy. Eventually they will see it.

I agree.

The nearby Asian dvd and blu ray counterfeit market will probably see this as an opportunity?

The old ways of torrents, newsgroups, and illegal streams sites, and then burn to discs will also appeal more?

A 50th anniversary deluxe box set for the Original Trilogy, with the 5 main different cuts inside, would surely sell well? And would also be popular with many Star Wars and film fans in general looking to add to their collections.

and that Young Jedi Adventures animated series for young children and pre-schoolers too. I always forgot about that.

I’ve never watched it, and not sure how much of it is really about The High Republic as it is a young kids series, but I think it counts as being a part of the larger THR project?

Lando (live action series) - a general discussion thread

Justin Simien On ‘Star Wars’ Lando Calrissian Disney+ Series: “I Have No Idea What’s Going On With It” - Deadline

'Justin Simien, director of Haunted Mansion and writer of the Lando Calrissian series at Disney+, is opening up about the Star Wars universe show almost three years since it was announced.

It was during Disney Investor Day in December 2020 that Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy announced that Simien was working on a series based on Lando, who Donald Glover played in Solo: A Star Wars Story.

However, there hasn’t been much said about the series besides Kennedy acknowledging earlier this year that it was “still happening.” Simien recently said in an interview with The Direct that he has “not received an update since that update.”

“I certainly poured my heart and spent a lot of time working with them to put together a really great show,” Simien told the outlet. “It feels like everybody loves it. And, you know, I was told we had to put a pause on it because of scheduling, and the next update I got [was in 2020], some years ago. So I don’t know, I have no idea what’s going on with it.”

In an interview with GQ earlier this year, Glover said that he “would love to play Lando again,” adding, “It’s a fun time to be him. It just needs to be the right way to do it.”

The actor said that since the pandemic, people have reflected on how “time is precious” and said, “I’m not interested in doing anything that’s just gonna be a waste of my time or just a paycheck. I’d much rather spend time with people that I enjoy.”

Although he couldn’t reveal much about the development of the series, Glover said he had been “talking about it” with Kennedy and “Lando is definitely somebody I’d like to hang out with.”’

That is a real pity. I still hope the series still gets made, and was looking forward to watching this, but it is not looking good.

Disney CEO Bob Iger Says The Company Is Scaling Back Production Of Marvel And “Star Wars” Projects from BuzzFeed

'Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed Thursday — just as the SAG-AFTRA strike kicked off — that the company will decrease the output of Marvel and Star Wars content in the wake of diminishing box office returns.

In an interview with CNBC’s David Faber, Iger explained that the decision is meant to address a “diluted focus and attention” among audiences and decision-makers for the two franchises but also, maybe more importantly, to cut costs. “You pull back not just to focus, but also as part of our cost-containment initiative. Spending less on what we make, and making less,” the 72-year-old said.’

There is a 4 minute video interview with Bob Eiger in the linked article above too.

Less Star Wars = less Disney+ subscriptions.

It is that simple for me. I’d cancel the Disney+, and just binge it for one month, once a year. That’s if there was anything new and good on it worth watching.

Lots of film fans online saying they should release more of the different cuts of films they already have in their archives too. Product that doesn’t cost much to screen.

I can think of a certain trilogy of films that people would pay good money if made available.

In physical box set releases or through Disney+ subscriptions. For some fans, maybe both!

Who is the greatest Jedi of all time? (Dave Filoni says it is Anakin Skywalker. Is he?)
Time

I’ll go with Filoni just trying to remind everyone Ahsoka’s importance in Star Wars, to promote his Ahsoka show. Despite 30+ years passing, and many other stories in and events in her life, since Ahsoka was trained by Anakin for those 2 and half years.

(was it only 2 and a half years? it seems longer).

Edit: It was also Anakin’s selfishness, greed, and lust for more, that led him to the path of eventually joining the dark side.

Even George Lucas states this on many occasions. Just a few examples:

https://gffa.tumblr.com/post/163372848020/george-lucas-2010-at-the-clone-wars-writers

Anakin was indeed an awful Jedi.

The High Republic - Books, Comics, audio, etc.
Time

I don’t have any tier lists or favourite characters, and I’ve only read a couple of the main stories.

Partly because of the cost and vastness of the whole project: https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Star_Wars:_The_High_Republic

and partly because I’m going to wait until Phase III ends, read the reviews when come in for the complete project, and I’ll then just pick up the more “essential” or highly rated stories for it.

Some of the other High Republic threads on here:

‘Star Wars: The High Republic’ era publishing project (aka ‘Project Luminous’) (2020 thread; the main general discussion thread)

Star Ware: Eclipse - a new video game set in The High Republic era (2021 thread)

The Acolyte (live action series set in The High Republic era) - a general discussion thread (2020 thread)

and there are a number of “Ratings and Reviews” threads on Star Wars books, novels, and comics which may have some High Republic content in them, listed in “Literature & EU material” section of An Index & Help Thread for The Expanded Universe.

LOL it’s still awful. I wonder why they kept it looking like a TV broadcast with the frame rate, is that more authentic?

I couldn’t watch more than 5 minutes of it. It looks all “nice and sharp”, but I know nothing about preservations or AI upgrades.

I do know 5 minutes is usually how long it takes of watching the Holiday Special before I have to switch it off! 😃

Ha! I’m the same, I can’t remember the last time I sat down and watched the Holiday Special in one sitting. 5-10 minutes of various parts, sure. And the animated Boba Fett segment is still cool to watch every now and then.
