POLL: So Who Bought Them & Who Didn't? (the 2006 GOUT DVD release)
Time

Okay, there are just WAY too many threads around here for me to keep track of to see who did/didn’t so please vote! Also, please fill us on about the reason(s) for your choice.

As for me, I didn’t buy them and still on the fence. I’ve avoided the stores too so not to give into temptation…kind of like an alcoholic attempting to kick the drinking habit by avoiding bars. Anyway, I didn’t buy them yet because I don’t want the SEs and I am a little annoyed about the whole anamorphic issue. I am sure something is in the works for the future but A) it will probably be on the next format and B) I don’t care about a big 6-movie boxed set next year because I have no use for the PTs and the SEs. I am not going to pay big $ for only 3 movies I want (the OUT). Even if they are anamorphic, is [what could be] $100+ worth it for 3 anamorphic movies?!? Hardly…

So as you can see, my dilemma is easy to see: pay much less now for a sub-par version I don’t necessarily want or agree with (but still tolerable for me mind you) or hang in there for a future (and probably more expensive) “maybe”?!?

Okay, enough from me and I sound like a broken record, I know LOL. So let’s hear what you did/didn’t do and why!

I'm not sure that this is the only time we will ever see the O-OT/OUT on DVD. Not counting a potential HD-DVD/blu-ray release, Lucasfilm hasn't exactly stuck by its past statements. Lucas swore at one point that Star Wars would never be released in any home video format because the only way to see it is in theatres. Then there is the famous "one last time" promotion for the 'Faces' release before the SEs came about. And I'm sure there have been others. Don't get too excited by a statement saying never again. It doesn't mean anything.

But it really WAS "one last time" when you think about it, because the SEs are not the OUT; until now, the Faces set was the last time we saw the OUT...

Again, although a dirty trick and not at all fair to the fans IMO, they were pretty truthful in regards to the OUT. "For the last time on VHS..." is what I recall one of the adds saying when the "Faces" set came out. And even though the SEs came out on VHS years later also, they weren't the OUT, so there was no false advertising there.

I just read recently about a whole bunch of releases coming to HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. The studios won't continue to dump money into two seperate formats for long IMO so I imagine something is going to happen soon to create a clear winner. Because of this, IF we see the OUT again, I stand by my statements and think it will be on the next format (again, 30th Anniv. aside).

Speaking of, I have noticed that CC's quality has gone WAY down hill. The store near me used to always have the new stuff but now, I am lucky to find anything there, the employees aren't helpful, etc. I haven't even stopped by yet to see how their SW DVD stock is but I am betting there isn't much...

Info Wanted: Anyone Planning on making Anamorphic versions using 2006 OUT DVDs?

also I think I have all versions out except X0 obviously, and the Eraser Set,but I compared this set to ALL others I have, and I like these,I am watching on a 62' DLP Hi-Def TV,with an OPPO Upconvert DVD multi region player, alot of the others look way to filtered to me(like I said,at least on my setup)hell even my Japanese cropped set looks to be filtered to much compared to these.
just thought I would throw this info out there,so if anyone else plans on making anamorphic versions,DVD-RB Pro is SOOOO easy, and VERY good quality as well.

Thanks again for the PM, DJ! Is there any way you could post some screen shots of what they look like converted? It seems like it is worth the time, but I'd like to see just how worth the time it will be!

Yeah I laugh at that too LOL

Mielr, I second Darth_Evil's comments! As you probably know from my many posts, I keep going back and forth with this release. But thanks to your reviews, I am seriously considering getting them now...

...and then never making another SW purchase again.

There are some DVD players that exist (Panasonic makes one) that have an 'aspect ratio' control, that allows you to zoom in on the picture, and also allow the subtitles to be seen on the screen, without being cut off.

Right. I can do this manually on my Malata by panning the picture.

So, you can move the image up on the screen? That's a handy feature.

I'm not sure if this is the same exact thing, but my TV actually lets me move the pic up and down when I Zoom. So if the subtitles are in the lower black part and cut off, I still may be able to position the picture so I can still see them.

And actually, when I Zoom in, I move the picture up a little usually anyway b/c it is more comfortable to view it this way for me.

UGH, this looks AWFUL! Would it be like this on the NTSC version too?!? I don't have the DVDs so I have no idea...

That's where it came from. It's fine on pre-THX NTSC LDs, and THX PAL LDs. I'm sure it's this -- among many other things -- that the X0 Project is looking to fix with the Japanese SC discs.

Oh, I thought this came from the PAL dsic. Wow, makes me want to buy it even less.

Yes, I too believe NOTHING that LFL tells us. But I am sure this will be it for DVD. It took almost 10 years to get them just to DVD in the form that they are in, so I imagine we have a few more years yet*. By that time, DVD will probably be on its way out.

*30th anniv. set aside, but I don't think a cleaned up transfer will be in there IF the OUT is even inlcuded in the first place. And heck, even if it is, I have no desire for it because A) it will be expensive and B) it will have the PT in it. NO THANKS!

Am I turning to the darkside?

I was one of those disgruntled fans that swore for months I would not be buying these DVDs. I even fired off an angry letter to Lucasfilm proclaiming that very sentiment. But I have to admit - I DID want to see them. I just refused to give [expletive] Lucas anymore of my money.

So I had the trilogy waiting for me in my Netflix queue. I timed the return of my movies from last week so Netflix would get them on Tuesday and ship out Star Wars that same day. Well - isn't it funny that it suddenly took an extra day for Netflix to receive my return this week? Yes, very funny indeed. And now the trilogy is showing up in my queue as "Very Long Wait."

Well - this could be the event that triggers my journey towards the darkside. I can see Emperor Palpatine sitting in Circuit City right now, holding up all three and saying, "You want these, don't you? Take them. They cost less than $40. Take them home and your journey towards the darkside will be complete."

It's very tempting, and I'm afraid I might cave. I pride myself on being a man of my word, and now I feel weak and pathetic. If I buy them, I'll have to shamefully hide them and never show them to anyone. I might even have to change my username on several forums.

What should I do?

rennervision, maybe this thread will help. I too am very upset at Lucas over this whole thing, but I am sort of looking at the bright side now: at least we got something and a non-anamorphic DVD is much better than nothing IMO.

If it's any consellation, I wouldn't think less of you because I know how you feel. And if it would help, maybe fire off another letter to LFL telling them why you bought it? That might help you feel better...

on DVD, which is all that is claimed above. Whether they'll do a next-gen format release remains to be seen, but it will be years, not months, away, if ever.

That was my thinking too, that it is a play on words and we will see it again...just on the next format. With each item I read, the more I think LFL is already looking ahead and not botheirng with the DVD format really. REALLY dumb move IMO, but at least not putting a lot of money into an OUT release it makes SOME sense to me now (business-wise that is).

Okay, I am leaning *slightly* towards buying them now I would rather have non-anamorphic DVDs than nothing. If I would buy them, in a few months I am going to try to sell the SEs discs at a yard sale or something and try to recoup some of the cost (or send them back...hmmm...). When the winner of the next format war finally comes to light and it takes off, I doubt very much I will be upgrading right away, so another OUT ourchase could be years away for me. MY VHS copies are quickly wearing down from watching them and also from what time does to tape so I need something that is going to hold up...

Mike O, I am still very optimistic and feel that we will see the OUT again, it's just that I am doubting very much now that it will be on DVD.

I didn't know what thread to put this in so I figured I would create another one so those on the fence (like me *cough*) can read it and see what they think...maybe this will push you to buy it? Or maybe you think this is more marketing hype, as we have heard "only" in the past before? Another clever play on words maybe?

Tune Into G4 This Afternoon...
Time
I watched the G4 show, and for the first time I might add. The SW comments were exactly what I expected. And what demographic is that show going for? The reason why I ask is because there was A LOT of sex talk but then the commercials were geared towards younger kids, as I saw one for GI Joe toys, etc. Very strange...

And that Olivia...WOW! I'd like to show her my Wookie.
