How Lucas can satisfy the fans.
Time
I am with bactaOT.

Originally posted by: 88keyzor years this forum has been built upon the basis of preserving, and distributing (as much as its swept under the rug), the OOT and now that GL has given us the best available release of the OOT out there are we thanking him? No. We are slapping him in the face and accusing him of hate mongering his own product.

1. Lucas is giving us a non-anamorphic transfer in 2006. A cutting edge company giving a non-anamorphic DVD...come on!!!
2. The OUT is merely a "bonus disc" (not as important to me but still worth mentioning).
3. He bundles them with the SEs.
4. They are all sold seperately, making them more costly (I won't be too picky with this fact b/c one could be looking for that, though)
5. He is making SE fans that wanted the OUT buy the SE AGAIN! All the while, knowing he is going to put out an '07 set that will contain different SEs with more changes (or at the very least, the same SEs...again). Also, LFL spins (yet again) the "Limited" and "First and Only" cath phrases, basically forcing fans to buy this release because, "What if it isn't released again?!?"

There is nothing to thank that man for IMO, unless you enjoy being ripped off. The way I see it, there is no other way to look at this other than a total screw job (yet again). Say what you will about LOTR, etc., that have done similar things over the years, but at least you get A) a quality product right out of the gate and B) EACH release is quality and special in its won right!

I honestly believe that GL doesn't want us to have great quality OOT movies. And I don't want them either. Like I said before, the better quality should be reserved for the movies that fit together with the prequels, exclusivly.

Yes, it is obvious you don't care because it is spelled anAmorphic.

I am happy that you can be content with a crappy product. Many people cannot be, though.

This guy will not be buying the DVDs

In return for giving us Star Wars, we bought into it. He invested his time and money, and turned a legimate profit.

I think he should be grateful for the support, but it's not like we were buying stock in Lucasfilm. A lot of us who would want him to put more effort into a DVD transfer of the O-OT are by and large the same people who curse Lucas and his vision constantly. At a certain point I can see how his sense of gratitute could have been eroded over time.

But I think the logic is a little flawed here because he DOESN'T put out a quality product! He even screwed over fans of the SE with wrong light saber colors, missing/muffled sounds and music, etc. Instead of owning up to it and fixing it, he and the company take the stance that this was intended and "creative decisions". Lucas/LFL are sloppy, put out crappy products and THAT is what people are mad about. Name one other person that treats his/her fans the way Lucas does...you'd be hard-pressed to find one...

Fixed Yoda in TPM, whatever mistakes (Hayden, Jabba, Jedi Rocks, Greedo, etc were NOT mistakes, as much as most of you would like to believe) like lightsaber colors in the OT. And maybe some extras that haven't been released before. That's all. Oh wait, Clone Wars should be included as well, with an "Episode II 2.5" crawl, both volumes edited into one.

Sorry haters, but this will be a six (hopefully 7) movie boxset, this will be the complete Star Wars Saga. You need to stop pretending that the prequels don't exist. Everyone I know in real life likes (or loves) the prequels. There are a lot of fans, probably even some of you pretend to hate them so you can seem "cooler" or something, because prequel hating is the "in" thing right now.

LOL "Everyone I know in real life"; "prequel hating is the 'in' thing right now". Wow, you come up with some real zingers!

It's amazing to me, that some people have not yet realized that this isn't an OOT vs. SE issue anymore.
EXACTLY!

Animorphic would be altered as well.

*sigh* All of the info on here and out there in cyber space and some people are still so misinformed...

First Impressions of the OOT ...

Lucasfilm is playing the long game; a waiting game; and it's working. After all this time, and all the petitions, and a billion posts and letters, and calls, and articles, and reviews and interviews, they put out a release that's worse than most B-Movies, and blatantly lie about why. ...just wearing us down.

And again, when I say, "us" I mean, me, you, and the core group of people who truly have a passion for historical preservation, who came to this site long before it morphed into freakin' TFN junior.

Mike, I honor and respect your opinion of course. But a business is a business, and it only understands one thing: MONEY! This release will prove that there is lots more to be made and LFL/Fox/God knows who else is involved will definitely take notice. Not only did they bring old fans back w/ this release, but they turned a whole group of people who never saw them before on to it. I feel that they'll want it in future releases to, if nothing else than for collection's sake...

Okay, my suggestion is since the 09/12 release is over with maybe we should all write to LFL with out ideas for this next release. I would imagine their minds are made up and most of what they want to include is decided, but hey, it is worth a shot. My only advice is:

1. BE POLITE! You won't be taken seriously if you are rude.
2. Don't say a negative word about the SEs if you don't like them. If you must mention them. say something like, "Even though I am not a fan of the SEs per se, I do understand that they will be included and I completely respect that. But fans like myself and others I have talked to would really enjoy seeing the OUT in anamorphic, and we feel a boxed set cannot be complete without them...". Something like that. It may also help to mention that we have all purchased SW movies a few times over and this set will need to be something special.
3. If you have any suggestions to kae the OUT release better, this would be a great time to mention it (eg. burned-in subtitles).

Remember: you catch a lot more flies with honey than you do with vinegar.

Info Wanted: Anyone Planning on making Anamorphic versions using 2006 OUT DVDs?

EDIT: And a question for those that made these anamorphic already: where do the subtitles appear now? I know people who have the DVDs and use the Zoom are complaining about them being cut off. Does this anamorphic transfer put them into the picture now somehow?

Good info, ESHBG. It looks like I should invest in the Pro version.

To answer your question, the subtitles are properly placed in the newly anamorphic version. They are player-generated forced subtitles, and DVDrb does fine with them. The Han/Greedo scene looks great, with no cropped/missing subtitles

Thanks a lot for the info, SamS! I am *kind of* regretting not getting these discs now, because I would've liked to have created anamorphic versions of them. I've never done this before but it really seems like a great first project to tackle. But as you can see in this thread, I just couldn't bring myself to buy these and support Luca$ for this sub-par release...

dark_jedi, if you would've read the numerous threads in the General section you will quickly find out that I did NOT buy the DVDs. It will be a little hard for me to "just make a set" when I don't have those to start with.

Lowest Priced OOT DVD Search.

I feel bad for anyone that wants them but didn't pick them up this week. CC is now listing them for $24.99! LOL

And I read on a few sites that some people don't like the tins from Best Buy because they said it has weak hinges, and once it is closed/opened a few times, it doesn't stay shut. The tin seemed pretty sturdy to me when I checked it out in the store so I am sure this isn't a widespread thing.

POLL: So Who Bought Them & Who Didn't? (the 2006 GOUT DVD release)
Time
Very good points again, CO! I too was considering getting these releases and saying "Forget it!" to anything else that was not the OUT. But I just can't help but shake the feeling that Lucas has something else up his sleeve...something better...

True, I could always buy these and then sell them if something better really does come along because the DVDs, the packaging, the tin from BB, etc., would probably be an easy thing to sell in later years if I so desired...

And on the bright side, since the idea of banning together and demanding better isn't the route that most OUT fans are taking, I must admit that I am happy to see the other route seems to be a success and these DVDs are selling well, and HOPEFULLY it will get a point to Luca$ if I am wrong and he really is that out of touch.

And for the record, I did put my "Faces" WS VHS tapes in today and it wasn't pretty. Nothing wrong with the tapes at all and my set is in mint condition and I have barely watched them over the years, but I am so used to the clear picture of DVD that they were a little tough to watch to be honest...I imagine this is a big reason why people are getting these DVDs, though, and no new news there...

Well yeah, I will exchange it if something is wrong with it; I haven't had it that long.

And what exactly does "the amount of effort put into making the thing" have to do with my question?!? If everybody else's copy is like this, I will let it slide and it won't bother me at all. But if they aren't, well then, I need to get a DVD that isn't defective!

LOL @ Cable-X1.

I think the '07 set will contain a lot, but I doubt it will be too big; it still has to be semi-cost effective for consumers to buy, and not many people can or will want to afford anything over $100 IMO. And another interesting thing in the mix here is Lucas needs to be careful at just what he puts in this set, and it has to be something very, very unique. Most of the fans have bought the same movies a few times over and even the die-hards will have a tough time buying all the movies for a 2nd, 3rd, or even 4th time again!

I think that it will either A) go the way of LOTR and you will get both versions on the same disk, extra disks with documentaries, etc. or B) another idea I have been kicking around, and there will be MULTIPLE boxed sets. Example: OUT box set, SE box set with PTs, etc. This way, Lucas will be able to double-dip on the die-hard fans.

POLL: So Who Bought Them & Who Didn't? (the 2006 GOUT DVD release)

Thanks a lot, Cable-X1!

Fuser:

If everyone held back because of the mediocre picture I honestly think we would never see the OUT again. If they sell well then LFL get the message that we want them.
True. But at the same time, standing up against LFL and saying, "Nice try and we want them, but please do it RIGHT!" could possibly yield the same (if not better) results. It's a guessing game, though, and in no way am I saying I am right and you are wrong (and vice versa).

CO: I understand your point totally and yes, that is one way to look at it. I too am the same and I didn't buy the '04 set, I didn't buy all of the versions of the PTs, I don't pick up anything SW-related anymore, etc. But I still think Lucas has something up his sleeve and this release is just a warm up. IMHO, I really think it was a way to clear old SE stock. He KNOWS there is a demand for the OUT and he definitely did not need this release to prove that, so this was his one last way to A) clear old SE stock and B) give the finger to the OUT fans one last time because of the sub-par quality. How many years have fans, magazines, actors, directors, etc., etc., been asking for the OUT? There is no way possible that Lucas didn't know there was a demand for this release, and again, he did not need this set to prove it! Any way you slice it, HE CAVED! These releases are on DVD and there IS a very likely future now. But Lucas needed his last final dig, his last way to make money of all of the people he "lost" to....a bit of revenge if you will. The way he is going to do it IMO is he will make them buy a crappy set and then release a better set very soon.

Of course I could be all wrong but I am going to go with my gut here. It paid off for me with the '04 set and I am sure it will again...

I don't know, CO...when you put it like that, maybe I should get it...damn, you're making me doubt myself now....I certainly would love it if this outsold the 2004 release. I would giggle my ass off at that one....

Lucas is a businessman....he can't ignore those numbers....original vision or not.

Like I said to CO, he KNOWS there is and has always been a demand for the OUT and he hardly needs this release to prove that. If Lucas truly believed or was unsure about people wanting the OUT, you still wouldn't have the OUT on DVD IMO.

POLL: So Who Bought Them & Who Didn't? (the 2006 GOUT DVD release)
Time
Please excuse the rant, but I am going to let it all out!

I went to CC, Target and Best Buy today to see what things looked like. All 3 had lots left, and BB had LOADS of the tins left and they seemed to be selling well, as 3 people in a very short amount of time picked them up while I was looking at them. CC had a lot of movies left but not one mention of the lithographs on the display. When I inquired about them just to see what response I would get, the salesman was clueless. Figures...

Anyway, I held the tin and the movies in my hand in each store but just couldn't bring myself to buy them when I saw (for example) movies like Revenge of the Nerds II and Ghoulies in anamorphic. Holding the SW copy in my hand, I said to myself, "One of the greatest movies of all time, and they won't even give us the same quality as those movies. And not only that, but they are forcing me to buy a copy of the movie I absolutely do not want (referring to the SEs of course)." I dunno, but something in me just clicked and the WEEKS (months?) of being on the fence ended, and I put the DVDs back down and walked away...

See, folks, I have a very unusual problem on my hands with my newer 16X9 DLP TV: not only do I get screwed because these releases are non-anamorphic, but I get screwed doubly because I can't use the Zoom feature if I play the DVD through my component setting! So I will need to use the A/V setting to be able to zoom in, losing even more quality on an already sub-par release AND I will lose most (if not all) of the subtitles too! I've watched movies this way before and it's not *that bad*, but those movies are older and many have since come out with newer anamorphic versions (another point I will touch on in a sec) so I can upgrade at any time if I so desire. But in SW's case, do I want to pay $45+ to be so screwed?!? If I wanted that, I'd be better off taking that money to Las Vegas.

I have absolutely nothing against those that bought this set, I understand where you are coming from, more power to you and I am happy that you are enjoying them so far! But me, I can only buy what I support, and I just can't support this release no matter how I try to spin it. If Lucas would've given me the OUT in anamorphic, I would be one happy camper and he would get my hard-earned money no problem. Heck, even if he gave me a non-anamorphic OUT but released JUST THEM in a boxed set or individually, I would've probably been happy with that also. But I can't help but feel Lucas is giving us all yet another middle finger and laughing at us, and I refuse to buy that man another box of Wookie Cookies.

When I found out recently that they have anamorphic scenes of the OUT in EOD, it tells me something is in the works. And I just read today that LFL is already hyping '07 to be "The year of Star Wars" with all sorts of new video games, movie releases, etc. I'll just wait and see what develops. Since Lucas said we would never see these on DVD and, SURPRISE, we have, I am betting he and LFL are going to follow the lead of the other studios out there (like Disney for example) and squeeze as much out of the consumers as they possibly can, and we will see a better version of the OUT in the very near future. Yes, it may be on the next format, but whatever.

My love for Star Wars runs very, very deep...but my love for what I believe in runs much deeper. I never believed in paying good $ for something that I viewed as low-quality, a trick and a rip-off, and IMO this is a perfect example of just those very things. So with this post I say, "Nice try, George!" and my weeks/months of sitting on the fence are now over, and I will be spending my hard-earned money on something else. Heck, I may even spend some of it on DVDs that actually take advantage of modern technology...a claim LFL used to be able to back up...

Question About Matrix Revolutions DVD
Time
This is something that has always bugged me and I just thought of it recently when I was going through my DVD collection:

On the menu for the Matrix Revolutions DVD, with each section you click you get some music and/or sound and a short clip from the movie. But when you click on the "Features" section, you are taken to the scene where Neo is stuck in the subway station, closes his eyes, sees the Matrix, and then Trinity arrives on the train. I have NO sound at all during this section of the menu and while that clip plays. Is this normal? It always seemed off to me because the other sections all had some kind of sound playing during the clip.

Thanks!
