Remember what Lucas said about the OOT not existing....?

Yes. Jim Ward's exhaustive search for source material to present on DVD was apparently of only video sources. I wonder how long it will be before GL and RM start claiming that "Star Wars" never existed on film, but only on digital video.

Actually, I'm wondering how long it will be before they claim Star Wars never existed period. Or how about, "Changes?!? What changes?!? Star Wars was filmed in 2004 and everything you see is exactly how it is supposed to be."

Another Form Of Protest?

Very true, but the damage will already be done: the numbers will be in showing success and then the retailers will get a lot back. They will sit on their shelves collecting dust AND the retailers neevr made the sale technically! The retailers will be very leery with the next SW release because they won't want to go through that again, pushing GL into a corner (I hope).

As for the mailing the discs back idea, I don't like it. 1) you already spent the money on the discs 2) you will be spending more money on postage 3) if the discs are in good condition, you know darn well they will just be repackaged and resold. GL will be the one laughing all the way to the bank...that is not a protest IMO, where you set the other side up for even further financial success...

The Ultimate Catch 22
Time
I agree, it is a total Catch 22. I fear that if these releases don't sell well, ANY chance of seeing the OOT again may be slim to none. So I was thinking about something: couldn't we all just buy them to push the numbers up, but leave them sealed and keep the receipt? After the reports come in, just return them, as you will be well within the 30-day window most retailers have in their return policy. I know it is not fair to the retailers, it isn't their fault and they will be caught in the middle, but it may also force the retailers to question any new SW releases from here on out, so George will get it from both the fans AND the retailers in years to come...

It's funny to me how LFL is pimping out the whole "Han Shoots First!" thing now. To me, it is pretty ridculous because Lucas is the one that started the whole issue from the beginning! It is like me creating a car design everyone loves. I later change it and people are upset, saying things like, "Bring that body style back!" Years later I offer the same style again and say, "Yeah, bring it back!" almost like I had nothing to do with it.

I can't help but think even Lucas' own company thinks he has gone way, way out into the deep end and is now revolting a little, trying to reel him back in and salvage what they can...

That is the sad thing, because I am convinced this won't cause Lucas never sticks to his words. That is the problem with all SW releases on DVD these days, it is a guessing game, and that is unfair to the consumer, because it forces you to possibly buy something cause it 'may never be released again', but then in the same breath says, "Due to popular demand......"

I don't mind when studios re-release DVD's with more bonus material (deleted scenes, documentaries, extra trailers), that is something that a fan can buy if they want more of something they love. But what Lucas is doing is putting out something that is not high quality so if he does put out something in Anamorphic next time, you have to buy it cause it is better quality.

I have lost total respect for the man.

BINGO! You summed up my feelings exactly, CO. The man does nothing but lie and I am getting sick and tired of being forced into playing into it all. You can take your "Limited edition never ever ever going to be seen again!" gimmick and shove it up your a**, Georgie! We heard it before and you went back on your word every single time (with the exception of the "Faces" VHS tapes; little did we know that WAS the last time we would see our beloved OOT [before 09/12/06...11 years later!!!]).

But on the same token, if you would be releasing a QUALITY product on 09/12, I would gladly march into the store with my money in hand and you wouldn't hear a peep out of me. Yes, I would still be a little ticked that you decided to treat the OOT with little respect by making it the bonus disc and still focusing on the SE, but I could easily live with that.

I can respect the opinions of those that said "just hang in there" but for how long? Another 11 years from now when Lucas needs to milk the SW cash cow one last time? No thanks...

I must admit that I am so torn right now! A part of me says that it will come out one day, a part doesn't. A part says there will be something great released in '07 and this is just to test the waters (and clean out the SE reserves; I agree with those that said in other threads that they probably have a lot of left overs), a part of me says we will get these same crappy OOT transfers (if at all) in any boxed set George would put out...

Fuck him, I just don't care anymore. Lucas has totally turned me off as a diehard OT fan, and you know what is coming in a couple years:

"Due to popular demand, The O-OT on DVD fully restored."

What can we do anymore, the man is the Emperor and doesn't give a shit about anything but himself.

Goodbye Mr. Lucas.

I agree totally. Thanks for ruining one of my favorite movies (and all of the memories that go with them) of all time, Georgie!

Fox France confirms the French OOT release >NOT< to be anamorphic
Time
I can't say this news is too surprising. I am still debating on if I am going to buy them or not, as I don't know how big of a deal this whole anamorphic thing is to me yet. Yes, I too wish for much better treatment for our beloved OOT. But at the same time I see we aren't dealing with a rational man here, so I'm not holding my breath. It has been a decade+ since the DVD format took off and became commonplace, and Lucas has yet to release them. Now here we are in 2006 with the biggest fan outcry ever IMO and he is STILL fighting tooth and nail...

I think I am going to wait and see what the reviews say after the 12th. If the DVDs turn out to be halfway decent, I may buy them and leave them sealed for a few reasons:

1. I still have my widscreen VHS copies to watch when the mood strikes me. Also, I found some people who can transfer them to DVD for me since I don't have the time or technology to do so, killing two birds with one stone (preserving my VHS copies and having them on DVD).
2. If Lucas does decide to make these DVDs the finale for the OOT sadly, they will be worth some money in years to come (but I don't think I will leave them sealed, though, and will be keeping them for myself). Non-anamorphic DVDs are still DVDs.
3. If Lucas finally sees the light and releases future, better versions of the OOT, I will fetch more for sealed copies vs. opened ones. Yes, it will still be a loss to me cost-wise possibly, but I will definitely be able to offset some of that for sure by leaving them sealed.

*FYI reading reviews saved my a** in the past. I bought the '04 versions the day they came out but I just KNEW something fishy was up with them and I made it a point to read some reviews before I opened them. Once I learned about all of the insane changes (yet again *sigh*) I returned them to the store for a full refund the next day. The really sad part in all of this is I was expecting the '97 versions and was okay with that...well let's put it this way: okay enough with it that I still would've bought them, but I always wanted the OOT on DVD...

EDIT: And I could always rent the Sept. ones too, watch them, and make up my mind for myself.

Okay, I have watched this movie dozens of times now and I still can't figure out the part when Obi-Wan lands on the planet and is told by that alian in not so many words, "Greivous is here." Obi-Wan gets back into his ship, tells his R2 unit to head back and tell Cody blah blah, and then the ship takes off. The next shot you see is Obi-Wan in the shadows watching the ship take off with his hood up. So how in the heck did he get from the ship to there?!? I always watch the screen to see if I can see him jump or something, and I never do. Is this yet another case of bad editing?!?!

Nineteen years have passed, and we're still waiting for EMI to do justice to The Beatles' catalog.
Those commercial CDs are crappy rips.
That's why guys like Dr. Ebbetts are playing the "X0" role with ultra-high-end turntables and pristine vinyl and getting better results than the official CDs.

Yeah right after I posted that I thought, "That was probably a bad example." LOL

I am not giving much credibility to this source at this time but I do think we will get a new transfer, and I smell a trick up someone's sleeve. You know, like the time you told a friend you can't make it to his party just to see the look on his face when you do show up LOL But the thing that bugs me is Lucas can never, ever just be straightforward with his fans and he lies, lies, lies! Why do we all have to play guessing games with the thing we love? Why not just let the fans know they are getting what they wanted from the get-go and let them be excited and happy for once? Imagine if, say, The Beatles operated like this:

"Sgt. Pepper's will never be relased on CD, sorry." The fans are disappointed.

A few years pass...

"Sgt. Pepper's may be relased on CD but it will be a crappy rip from the original recordings. Sorry, no remastering." The fans say, "Why even bother then?!?" and are disappointed yet again.

A few months pass...

On release day it comes out remastered and exactly what the fans wanted. Now what the heck is the point in all of this nonsense?!?!? How many fans do you LOSE along the way with your behavior, Georgie?!?!?!?

I agree. The Prequels are all out now and in a few years, SW won't have anything new and worthy of noting for it to cling to. I do think that once that happens, we will see the OOT on whatever media is popular at that time to bring it back into the public eye and to rehash some of the history for younger generations who weren't around to see all of this nonsense.

I know this doesn't help much for those that don't want to wait any longer, though...

I certainly wouldn't recognize them. They're common models of droids. It would be like recognizing a toaster that your roommate used twenty years ago.

Very bad analogy IMO because Obi-Wan ackknowledges both R2 and 3PO numerous times throughout the PT. I find it very hard to believe that you wouldn't recognize a toaster that co-piloted your best friend's ship, a toaster that flew Padme to the planet where you killed your best friend...

I have been saying the same thing for YEARS! The O-OT was one huge fluke IMO...one of the coolest, most important flukes in the history of film! SW came out good because Lucas thought it was bad. The decisions Lucas was forced to make due to time constraints/budget/whatever actually saved the films because he didn't have the time to screw them all up...

Hello all! I am a long-time lurker but just had to join in on the discussions as of late. This site is GREAT and I am happy there are others out there I can discuss all this with.

Anyway, my story is really no different than all of you: I LOVE the O-OT and have many fond memories of seeing ESB and ROTJ in the theatre, playing with and collecting the toys, etc. (I am 28 yrs old btw). Then when the news came out in the mid-90s that Lucas was going to do the PT I got really scared and worried, as I thought that some of the back-story would not jive with what I had made up in my head to fill in the gaps. Also, I was afraid these new movies would ruin some of the "tone" set in the O-OT, one that simply CANNOT be replicated! Sadly, I was right on the money and the PT (and all the versions of the OT since) have ruined a lot for me.

I disliked EPI, but I never totally hated it and it still had some of the SW feel to me. It wasn't all about CGI sets which helped keep some of the "warmth" of the old movies, Darth Maul was pretty cool and the lightsaber dual was one of the best IMO. I must say that it is ironic to me, though, that as time goes on EPI is starting to be the one I just might like the most?!?!?!?!? [that is if I simply HAD to pick one LOL]

EPII - I left the theatre thinking it was really boring but picked up at the end. I left not liking it but not hating it either...until I got a chance to see it again and again and I became COMPLETELY bored by it and thought it sucked pretty bad. There were so many dumb parts and Lucas wasted a whole chapter of the saga on silly, pointless things. Also, the whole Jango/Boba/Clone Army thing was a TOTAL joke IMO. Lucas missed yet another good opportunity and could've added some really cool Fett battle scenes in the Clone Wars and/or some back-story, complete with the hunting of Wookies (now THIS would've been a good time to add Chewbacca and do a sub-plot about where he came from).

EPIII - Like a few have stated, I left the theatre LOVING it (especially towards the end) but the more I watch it, the more I dislike it. How can you cut the Rebellion scenes?!? How can you add such silly things like Chewbacca and Yoda knowing each other?!? *yawn* These are just a few examples but you catch my drift I am sure. I now rank EPIII like this: good only for the last 45 min. or so. If I HAD to pick a favorite, then maybe, just maybe this movie would be it.

I also liked that he was named Vader before the suit. I just would have liked to see the man in the suit do some Jedi killing like we've dreamt about seeing for years. Instead we saw him get the suit, scream no, and look at the death star. Boooring.

We've waited all these years to see the the suit on the big screen again and that's all we get. It seems to be a re-occuring theme for Lucas. Make them wait forever for what they want then give them just enough to piss them off.

I COMPLETELY agree and this is how I pictured it too. If I were Lucas, this is how I would've done it:

--Anakin turning to Vader and being out of the suit for a bit and then the battle with Obi-wan, then Vader into the suit.
--Vader in the suit, where he fights with and kills Jedi like Mace Windu. Just imagine a battle between these two, where Vader could make comments the whole time about Windu/the Council not granting him the rank of Master when he was "...merely Anakin. Thanks to your foolishness, I have grown more powerful than any Jedi; you don't realize the power of the Dark Side!"
--Vader killing anyone he supects being part of the Rebellion (again, paramount on LEAVING THESE SCENES IN!!!)

I can go on and on. Too bad this wasn't reality.
